Boxes.
No matter who you are, where you go or what you do in this life, that's all everything ever seems to come down to in the end.
We all do it, we all define many, many, many, many little boxes, not only for ourselves, but for those around us.
For some these are neat little things, intimate and infinite in equal measure. For others they are broad and ill-defined, containing anything and everything that doesn't fit anywhere else. Even when something can't be compartmentalised, categorised or contained, that doesn't stop us from trying to put it away in a box somewhere in our otherwise empty little lives.
Family, friends, lovers, secrets, fears, regrets, hopes, wishes and dreams. Each of these all have their own little box in your life, don't they, my love?
Some are kept in your heart forever, others are left in your head for never.
So which am I?
I who am intimate in my infinity and infinite in my intimacy?
Where do I belong?
Friend? Lover? Secret fear? Or merely a dream?
Where do I dwell?
In your heart or in your head?
Why not both?
Yes, both.
That's where all the biggest and best box of all is kept, after all.
You know the one. Don't you remember?
You must remember...it's important...for both of us.
After a while purple smoke gathers around you, transporting you from the nothing of your world into the everything of my world. You hear a chorus of angels as they guide you through the puffs of smoke.
Angels: We embrace
Judgment Day
We embrace
New inventions
Find your grace
In defeat
We embrace
New intentions
Forced on us
By decree
As the smoke starts to clear and the words of angels begin to fade, you find me sat upon my throne under a soft purple spotlight and otherwise surrounded by darkness.
You recognise my Grandfather's oakwood box in my lap, and the IWF Diamonds World Championship before me at my feet. You also take note of the pink butterfly clipped in my ruby red hair before your attention returns to the box, the lock facing you and away from me and the brass key already in the slot, inviting to be turned.
Which way was still uncertain, and so for you the box would remain both open and closed, at least for the moment.
It surprises you to hear me start to sing some old song with which you were barely familiar.
Never thought that you would be
Standing here, so close to me
There's so much I feel that I should say
But words can wait until some other day...
A considerable pause follows, but mercifully ends before it gets too awkward for either of us.
Kiss me once
Kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time
Haven't felt like this my dear, since can't remember when
It's been a long, long time
You'll never know how many dreams I dreamed about you
Or just how empty they all seemed without you
So kiss me once
Kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time...
Just as you were growing accustomed to the soft melody of my voice, you are confronted rather abruptly by a question.
Hasn't it?
And so here we are. Another day, another dollar and yet another chance for you, whoever you are, to challenge me for my crown, my throne, my time, my place and my face. The face of the Diamonds Division. The one with the world laid out before her, at her feet, an oyster - dead.
As dead as a doornail, a dormouse and a dodo too.
Hehehehehehehehehehehehehehahahahahahahaha...
As dead as every unfulfilled hope and every broken dream with which the two of you march towards me, certain in your end, yet uncertain in your Eternity. Believing in your Heaven yet ignorant of your Hell. It's not about the destination, it's about the journey, and both of you have come so far already, Finalists heading towards their Final Destination, chasing the same dream they killed but a moment ago, earlier in the night.
Tragically poetic? Poetically tragic?
One or the other, perhaps both at the same time.
You tell me.
Tell me all about it, the night is young and I have all the time in the world. Time enough to see your death, time enough to hear your final breath, to taste bitter defeat and sweet victory in the same night as I touch one of you like I have touched so many before.
Ahhhhh the sweet scent of death, can you smell it?
You see me take a deep breath and sniff the air.
It lingers around us forever, igniting every sense, drawing closer every day...until one day...
You see me click my fingers.
You're gone.
Just like he was.
Just like they were.
Just like they all will be, and on that day, none of this will matter. For the two of you that day will be here soon, and for one of you that day will be here sooner, still.
The only question is who's going to go first?
The brand name or the value pack? Variations on a theme, variations of the same dream in a similarly named package.
Don't you just hate it when they try to get you like that?
Special offer!
Two for one!
Come one, come two, come all!
The Saras and the Sarahs and the Saharas, all will silenced and not just the H's, but the A's, the R's and the S's too! For all names were created equal in their meaningless before Death. After Death. When the last letters of the dying too fall silent in contemplation of the eternity in which they now exist.
Life owes you nothing for all your hard work and Death owes you even less, and in time you will come to understand that.
In time, you will all come to understand eternity, not as your beginning but as your end.
The natural end to all things, the dead end to all roads, even those that are paved with gold.
So here I stand, in the middle of the road...
A young brunette emerges from the shadows before me. You see her kneel and pick up the IWF Diamonds World Championship. She presents it to me, and I take it, smiling as I usher my child back into the shadows.
Go on little one, go and finish your little game of hide and seek with Lexi...
You see me place the IWF Diamonds Championship on my shoulder.
Three times the weight of the world on my shoulders...
I stand now where all roads meet and the world converges, united as it ever was by the spectre of Death. The logical conclusion to quests of justice and quests of revenge. Two graves have been dug, equal in size and dimension as all hopes and dreams are in this life.
Death is fair to all, just like you need it to be, Sarah.
Death is the best revenge, just like you need it to be Sara.
Face to face, name to name, hopes to ashes, dreams to dust. Face to face, two face, two face me. Both the Heiress and the Queen. I have been the one and the other. Both the known and the unknown. I have sought justice, I have sought revenge. I have known both and I have known neither. I have known you too.
I have known you all.
For you all covet a crown that already has a head.
A head that lays miles ahead of you, but not down in front of you. Not yet.
Not for a long time yet. A time you're all waiting for. A time you all already know to be mine and mine alone.
I have all the time in the world and all the world in time for I am both your world and your time.
I am the Eternity you've been waiting for and the Eternity you will continue to wait for, the Eternity that exists between love and fear, reality and dream, challenger and champion...
I am the Eternity that exists between a Heiress and the Throne.
No matter who you are, where you go or what you do in this life, that's all everything ever seems to come down to in the end.
We all do it, we all define many, many, many, many little boxes, not only for ourselves, but for those around us.

The beautifully bright brown eyes of a pretty eight year old girl beam down with pride as she once more unpacks her bright pink Barbie fun house, she counted the seconds it took her to convert it from a carry case to a dollhouse and back again under her breath. It was a fun little game, changing something into something else. It was a skill she was developing and she had already gotten faster at it than before.
On her third conversion to a dollhouse, she stopped as she heard voices and footsteps approaching her door. She instinctively picked up Barbie and laid her down on the dollhouse bed before she turned her attention back to her own bedroom door. Her father entered and she smiled.
He smiled back as he approached her bed and set down the wooden box he was carrying down, the key resting in its brass lock, but whether the box was open or closed was uncertain. Perhaps it was both, or perhaps it was neither, still it was not the first time she had seen it.
"What are you doing with Grandpa's box, Daddy?" asked the little girl, cocking her head to the side, her eyes shining with relentless curiosity.
"Grandpa told me he wants you to look after it for him," answered Daddy.
"Why?"
Daddy sighed as he sat down beside his only daughter.
"Because it's a special box and Grandpa needs a special person to look after it while he's gone, and we couldn't think of anybody more special..."
Daddy sighed as he trailed off.
"Grandpa's gone?"
Daddy nodded.
"Where?"
"Heaven," said Daddy, pointing up to the ceiling, as she followed his gaze.
The little girl closed her eyes and took a deep breath before she whispered to the Heavens.
"I hope it doesn't hurt anymore, Grandpa..."
Daddy held his little girl tight as she started to sob. Now Mommy entered and immediately cradled her daughter as well.
"I told you she would understand," whispered Daddy.
"Maybe," whispered Mommy, "But I was hoping she wouldn't have to, yet."
