The drive home he had been silent. Maxine, Brooklyn and Warren had been talking but Dean had sat quietly in the front seat. As they pulled into the compound everyone poured out of the ambulance heading to their rooms, there had been talk about a movie.
He waited until there was no one else around. It had been gnawing at him for days. But to have Her say it. Say it out loud… He assumed it had been God trying to get under his skin. ‘Push the big red family issues button’ but she’d more or less confirmed it. Was it a game? A con? He wasn’t sure. He didn’t like it.
He waited in the threshold of her room. Standing at attention, not moving until she acknowledged him.
“Is it true?” He asked as soon as her eyes landed on him.
“Have I ever lied to you, Dean Harper?”
“You said it to him not me. Is it true?!” Dean demanded, as suicidal as it felt to yell at Her.
If Rowan was angry at his outburst, however, she didn’t show it. “Does it matter?”
“It does.” Dean felt his body shaking.
Her eyes gleamed as she stared at him appraisingly for a few more long moments, before… “Yes. It is true.”
Dean closed his eyes as he felt the bottom drop out. “How long have you known?”
“Since I returned from the pit. I wasn’t sure before. I am now.”
Dean struggled to find the words to express how the deep cutting pain. “…I need some time.”
“Take whatever time you need.”
Dean turned on his heel and walked out before punching the wall as hard as he could.
