He’d been waiting in the same spot for longer than he’d want to admit, knowing that eventually his inquiry would show herself. He looked down at the pocketwatch that hung from the pocket of his waistcoat, clearly he wasn’t dressed to compete. Hell even if he was, the show had already finished.
As the seconds hand passed over the twelver, the minute hand lurched forward and dragged the hand of fate with it. His eyes lifted to see his inquiry rounding the corner, bouncing a fussy plus one as she walked. He stepped out into her path, putting on his best smile.
Matt Knox: Tara! Just who I was wanting to see! If you’ll spare a minute for an old friend?
Tara’s mood changed for the blink of an eye; there was no mistaking the agonizing annoyance she felt by his mere presence, and she was certain that he knew it, but for the sake of Lilith, she did put a smile on. The tone of her voice is riddled with sarcasm.
Tara Fenix: For an old friend… I can spare a minute.
Knox’s smile twitched as if to answer the annoyance. The two had never been huge fans of one another, he couldn’t recall who started what but he was sure they were likely both justified.
Matt Knox: Triple crown. You must be very proud of Sabin….Oh, don’t worry i’m not here to lecture you about the ending..Shit happens and that situation…It’s ongoing. I do wonder though, what Angel will tell SAbin he owes him for the assist? Or maybe it’s implied…I can’t claim to know how your family communicates amongst itself.
Tara flashes a quick smile, and snorts lightly under her breath.
Tara Fenix: You can’t claim to, so why do you pretend to? I know my son, and I know that he didn’t need Angel’s help. But you keep pushing those buttons, and there won’t be a thing I can do to stop him from breaking you. So what is it you wanted to tell me?
Matt Knox: That’s just it, Tara. He didn’t need it, nor does he need him…and yet Angel continues to use him. Now, I know you’ll deny seeing it. I won’t fault you for it, it’s family after all. Tell me this much though, when the time comes. Say that Wraith does end up across from Angel in the Heir to the Throne, and the boy gets one over….how long until your husband draws another hard line, and Wraith finds himself on the wrong side of it?
Matthew steps forward, daring to raise a hand and place it on her shoulder.
Matt Knox: I’m speaking to you as a father, to a mother. Everything we do is for them, Tara. Everything a good parent - and for all i’ve faulted you you are an amazing mother - a good parent protects their children. Even when the enemy has placed themselves at the head of your table…
He removes his hand, shifting it to brush the infant’s cheek with a fond smile, albeit a little sad.
Matt Knox: Take measure of your house, Fenix…and do what’s best for Sabin.
Tara pulls Lilith away from Matt Knox ever so slightly, but there is a hint of visible contemplation as Tara narrows her eyes. She snorts again, and shakes her head to dismiss the intrusive thought.
Tara Fenix: Have a good day, Matthew.
She says while pivoting on her heel and continuing down the hallway. Matthew watches her go, the smile slowly fading as he watches her go.
Matt Knox: At least one of us ought to..
And with that, the Raven turned to find the exit to this damn place. Or buy more weed off that one lighting tech, who knows.
