We cut to Tiffany Jones backstage, with a microphone in hand. She’s standing by with a sombre faced Warren Harper, no doubt looking for an exclusive update on the current IWF Men’s World Champion, Dean Harper’s condition, following a vicious assault at the hands of a returning Rowan McDonnough and her latest pack of wolves.
Warren looked down a moment, stroked his beard, shook his head and took a deep breath. He was thoroughly unsurprised, almost looked as if he had anticipated something like this for a a while now.
Tiffany Jones: Warren, can you please give us an update on Dean. How is he? How serious is it?
Warren sighs, a slight shake of his head.
Warren Harper: Do I look like a fucking doctor to you, Tiffany? Physically, I know it’s going to take a lot more than that to put Dean out, especially now he has the World Championship again and a point to prove to anybody who will undoubtedly compare him to the rest of his family around here. Mentally? Emotionally? That’s tougher to say, Dean hasn’t always been the most open book about what he thinks or feels…even when things are going well for us. Now though, he’s doing that thing he always does to protect me - shutting me out, putting on a brave face and making light of the situation…
Tiffany awkwardly waits a few moments for Warren to compose himself.
Warren Harper: But I fucking knew this would happen. I knew she’d come back to send him a message because if there’s one thing Rowan does even better than intimidate, it’s holding a fucking grudge. Plotting and stewing all this time, waiting for her moment, an ever present shadow in our lives. I knew it was only a matter of time before she enacted her revenge for the dissolution of the Pack. I fucking knew it the first night Dean started waking up in a cold sweat in my arms again and his nightmares started. He thought I was being paranoid and over-reacting, but I knew better…
Tiffany Jones: If you knew it was coming, why didn’t you try to intervene out there tonight? Fear?
Warren Harper: Fear is inevitable when you’re dealing with Rowan, trust me I know better than most. I’ve lived with it, served under it. Only the foolish or insane will try and convince you they don’t fear her, and since I am neither, I’m not even going to try. All I will say is in The Pack you took your lumps for disappointing her, and Dean was better than most at taking whatever punishment she deemed necessary, that is how he earned his position as Her Most Loyal after all. If I know Dean as well as I think I do, he wouldn’t have wanted me or anybody else to come out and save him because he sees it all as justified and warranted for breaking his oath to her and to The Pack…
Tiffany Jones: And what do you think?
Warren Harper: I think Dean is a bloody idiot for holding her in as high regard as he does, as a maternal figure in his life, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned knowing Dean as intimately as I do it is that Dean Harper is a man who you can’t save, especially from himself. If he wants to endure more of Rowan’s bullshit after I thought that life was well and truly behind us, then I won’t stop him. It’s not my Hell to walk through nor my Demon to slay…
Tiffany Jones: Wow, isn’t that a little cold even for you? To just abandon your husband like that…
Warren Harper: I’m not abandoning him, he’s just never needed me, not for stuff like this…why would he need me now?
Tiffany Jones: So the rumours Uriel Black was talking about on the pre-show earlier are true? You and Dean are having problems?
Warren clenched both his jaw and his fist tight at the mention of Uriel Black. He could not lose control, not here, not now. It was too deep a wound, too personal to share.
Warren Harper: Fuck Uriel Black, I’m glad he got his ass canned tonight…it was a long time coming…
Having had enough of his time wasted by a nosy interviewer looking for a story, Warren walked off, forcing Tiffany to deal with an awkward and abrupt end that left her with more questions than answers about the whole situation.
