Open Fight Night…
Once a month the landscape of the IWF has a chance to be turned on its head. This time is no different, especially with the start to Heir to the Throne. Everyone is looking to put their best foot forward and make their mark. Points are so precious right now, and no one on the roster can afford to get behind the eight ball. If you miss out on the chances you are given, there may be no coming back.
I was expecting anyone, and everyone, to be gunning for me. But there was no one brave enough to ask me for a match. Normally, I wouldn’t blame them. It seems lately that people are having trouble walking out of the ring after facing me. They’re putting their careers on the line by just stepping into the ring with me. Double points couldn’t even give the men of IWF courage. That’s a sad state of affairs.
If no one wanted to face me, I would just accept scraps. That’s when someone finally crawled out of the woodwork. No, they didn’t come out and challenge me like a man. They decided to get while the gettin is good. Do you see how many people using the Heir to the Throne to debut or return? It shows just how thirsty the locker room is.
It’s fine. It’s all good.
I’m not focused on Heir to the Throne. I don’t need to be. The points will come. All I have to do is show up and take care of business. In the end, I’ll be right where I need to be. There is only one problem…
The winner of the Heir to the Throne gets an Imperial title shot at Extreme Endurance. It’s just too bad that I’ll already be busy. You see, I’m the two time Man of Steel championship. That means I’ll already be main eventing the show. Sure, the show might be a couple months away, but this title isn’t going anywhere.
I’m not worried about Open Fight Night. I’m not worried about teaming with Jayson Matthews. I’m not worried about Will Fenell. I’m not worried about the former Man of Steel champion Mason St. Croix? I sure as hell am not worried about being in the cage, it’s where I thrive. It’s where I belong.
At Open Fight Night, I’m walking out with the points. More importantly, I’m sending everyone a message. If anyone is looking at Ryan Shane as a fluke, or an easy target, they are going to be proven dead wrong.
Four men are entering that cage...none of them are better than Ryan Shane.

June 26th, 2017
It’s the day after Bloody Assizes. A night where Ryan Shane left every piece of himself in the ring against Devlin Raine. In return he walked out with the IWF Man of Steel title. A prize that Ryan has had his eyes on since his return.
A battered, and bruised, Ryan Shane has just finished loading up his rental car with all of his belongings. This included the Man of Steel title. After making sure that he hasn’t forgotten anything, Ryan enters the car.
London had been good to him. His decision to stay away from the rest of the IWF roster and the crowds paid off. Though it could have ended much worse. The headlines could have been much different. Instead of “Ryan Shane wins second Man of Steel title” they could have read “Former Man of Steel champion found dead”.
Ryan sits in the rental car reflecting on things for a moment. This is when he feels the vibration of his phone from inside of the pocket of his jeans. He digs the phone out and stares at the screen. It’s a number, that even though isn’t saved into his phone, has become familiar to him.
Ryan Shane: She sure is persistent…
Instead of answering the call, Ryan ignores it. He’s getting used to this routine. Ever since he answered it the first time and realized who was on the other end. He tosses the phone on the seat next to him. Now that he is Man of Steel champion once again, there are going to be increased opportunities. The downside is, there are going to be more people looking for something.
Amber Lynn: Who is she Ryan?
He looks over at the passenger seat to see his dead girlfriend going through his phone.
Amber Lynn: There are dozens of missed calls…
Ryan Shane: Yes, missed calls. Who she is isn’t important.
The look of sadness on her face tells him that she doesn’t believe him.
Amber Lynn: It’s only been three months…
Ryan didn’t need the reminder. He’ll never forget the tragedies of March 26th. They will stay with him forever.
Amber Lynn: You’ve already replaced your son with that championship belt…
The thought that a strap of leather and metal could replace the love he had for his son stings.
Amber Lynn: Now you’re trying to replace me…
Ryan Shane: I’m not…
Again, he can tell that she doesn’t believe him.
Amber Lynn: A couple of nights ago you were ready to join us. Now, you’re making plans for a future without us.
Ryan Shane: I’m sorry Amber, but please never question the love I have for you and our son. I’ve just realized that it’s not my time.
The look on Amber’s face turns from sadness to one of anger.
Amber Lynn: So it was my time? Our son’s time?
Ryan Shane: I never…
Amber Lynn: Is this about that girl you saved? Are you feeling like some sort of hero?
Ryan Shane: Amber…
Amber Lynn: Why didn’t you save us hero?
This leaves Ryan speechless. A knock on the window of his car snaps him out of it. When he turns to see who it is, he sees the teenage girl from the other night. She signals for him to roll down the window.
Teenage Girl: Who were you talking to?
Ryan Shane: Um, just myself…
She’s not sure if she believes him.
Teenage Girl: I just wanted to say thank you for the other night.
Ryan Shane: You're welcome but you didn’t have to run away.
Teenage Girl: Yeah well, you don’t exactly seem like a nice guy.
Ryan Shane: I don’t?
Teenage Girl: I’ve seen you on TV.
It starts to make sense to him.
Ryan Shane: So why was that guy after you anyway?
Teenage Girl: He doesn’t like it when a girl says no…
Ryan Shane: But you’re a kid…
Teenage Girl: I’m not a kid, but yeah…
The thought hits him and Ryan feels sick to his stomach.
Ryan Shane: Are you going to be alright?
Teenage Girl: I’ll manage…
She starts to walk away.
Ryan Shane: Is there anything else I can do?
Teenage Girl: You’ve done enough, see you on TV hero…
Ryan Shane: Can I at least get your name?
She ponders for a moment before deciding she can trust him.
Teenage Girl: Destiny!
She darts off, and Ryan rolls up the window on his rental car. He can’t help but chuckle to himself. What a fitting name.
This hardly seems fair…
The IWF has paired the Man of Steel and Invictus champions together. Now I’m not fan of Jayson Matthews. I’ve always found him to be a guy I can’t take seriously. He’s always been sort of a joke in my eyes. You can’t really blame me though, right? I think his history in the IWF speaks for itself. In the past he’s always just appeared like he’s here for fun and games. Though perhaps I was wrong. The results speak for themselves. He is the only ever three time Invictus champion. That’s something right?
It doesn’t matter that the reigns have been short…
It’s still an accomplishment, and about as good as it gets for someone like Jayson Matthews. The guy does try though, doesn’t he? Even if he makes the wrong choices like following in the footsteps of Nighthawk.
Failure breeds failure Jayson…
I’m not asking much of you Jayson. All I ask is that you don’t get in my way. Just don’t make a fool out of me. Hopefully teaming with a legit talent like myself will bring something out of you. There’s a reason why this match is Man of Steel rules. I’m the draw in this match.
We represent Detroit Jay, we can’t lose to some good ole boys from Georgia.
Let’s start this trip in the ghetto…
This is where we find Will Fenell, a man who I’m not sure knows who he is. A man who embarrassed himself everytime he opens his mouth. I think it says something that I can understand the words of Ulf Hednir just fine, but I need a translator to figure out just what you are saying.
You’re one of the guys I was talking about earlier…
You’re using the Open Fight Night format to get ahead. You goaded Jayson into accepting a match so you can earn an Invictus shot. Perhaps it would have worked out for you as well, if they didn’t turn your one on one affair into a tag match. Now you have to deal with Ryan Shane as well as Jayson Matthews. I think that’s just too much for you to handle.
You could have, and some say should have been in my position Will…
You were so close to grabbing that briefcase at Night of the Immortals. You could have been the Joker in the Pack. I’m not sure you wouldn’t have squandered it like Devlin Raine though. I heard that you could have been in line to face Raine, but then you went and got the shit beat out of you by Kole Kaos. Sounds like things haven’t gone your way since Night of the Immortals, has it?
I know you have your heat on going to Lineage and getting a shot at Jayson Matthews. You can forget about that right now. I don’t care if you take his title, but you won’t earn a shot at my expense.
At Open Fight Night, you’re going to be on the losing end…
It’s a good thing that pit bulls in Atlanta aren’t put out of their misery anymore after they fail…
Now onto the man who wanted a piece of me...Mason St. Croix…
This guy is a real life American hero…
He should be appreciated for all that he’s done…
But this is the IWF, and whatever you’ve done out their doesn’t mean a damn thing. Just because you fight for freedom wherever there’s trouble, like some real life G.I.Joe., doesn’t mean I owe you an ounce of gratitude once that bell rings.
The trials and tribulations you’ve faced on the battlefield don’t mean a damn to me. That’s the road you chose to take to get here. My road is a little more traditional, but don’t think I haven’t had my share of ups and downs.
What you’ve gone through in your life...isn’t more important than mine.
Even if we look at your IWF accomplishments, they were a lifetime ago. A lot has changed since you were here last. This isn’t the same IWF. The IWF has more talent than ever. You’re making a return to a battlefield you can’t possibly recognize.
This business is one of what have you done lately…
How many people can remember or even care about your past Mason?
All your undefeated streaks, all your championships, and what do you have to show for it?
Nothing…
You want a shot on me? That’s a mistake that you’re going to regret. I’m not some easy target. I’m not someone that a perfect weapon like yourself can brush aside. I’m the ONLY two time Man of Steel champion. I’ve proven that when it comes to IWF I’m going to be the one on top.
As good as you were, all you’ll ever be in a flash in the pan. Coming back for the Heir to the Throne isn’t going to change that. All it shows is that, you’re trying to relive the past. You’re trying to get the one thing you’ve never had, the Imperial championship.
If you wanted it...you should have taken the easy road.
You have to go through me, and I don’t envy you.
At a time of war you might be the one to call. You may be the master technician. But in the ring? I’m the perfect weapon, I’m the winner of the war.
If you want to know how far anger and hurt can take you Mason...look no further than what I’ve accomplished the past couple months.
When the cage is lowered it’s going to be a brutal fight. Four men who want the same thing. The question is, who want’s it more?
I assure you...no one wants to win more than Ryan Shane!
