I did it.
I finally did it!
I finally beat Bob Pooler to become a record setting Three Time Invictus Champion!
And so gotta say that I am so freaking stoked to be able to say that. Like I am immensely honored to be able to hold this title and this record. Also just saying, I'm the first male superstar to hold a championship three times. I never thought I'd ever be breaking records or holding a championship as many times as I have. I cherish this moment, and I plan to take it seriously even though it seems like I'm gushing like a fan boy. But I can't help it.
I'm just super ultra mega pumped.
I don't mean to sound like I'm gloating, but I deserve a little time to celebrate my victory after all the hard work I put into earning it. That's right I earned it, there is no other way to describe what Bob made me go through to win this belt. Three, long, intense, physical matches and after it was all said and done, I still just BARELY made it out of England alive. I know that Bob Pooler made me EARN this belt because I know that I grew as a competitor that night. I had too. It was either step up or fall to the wayside and I was not going to let that happen again.
But now I'm the champion.
I'm still just so geeked to say that.
It's a new phase in my life.
And I know my work is just beginning. I’m going to see all types of challengers raise up out of the ranks. Some big, some small, some tough, some mean and I'm going to have to step up and rise to the challenge if I want to keep this title around my waste. With each passing challenge I'm going to have to dig down deeper then ever before. But hey, I got everything I could ever need by my side. I got a brand new championship, a new girlfriend, and one of the best wrestlers in the world coaching me. With them by my side, I don't think there is any challenge I won't be ready to face on my way to becoming my own man of one thousand holds.
There would be many challenges up ahead for me to face coming up, but I think the first thing I needed to do with the belt, is have a little homecoming…
Jayson Matthews: Do you think they’d let me keep a stethoscope?
Sasha Grey: I don’t think so. Why would you want a stethoscope for anyway?
Jayson shrugged his shoulders.
Jayson Matthews: I don't know. In case I want to crack a safe or like hear inside of things, or like spy on people in hotel rooms like in those old spy movies.
They both stop in the middle of the Rush Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation located in Chicago. Jayson had on a Michigan track jacket, zipped up.
Sasha Grey: I don't remember you being this weird before we started dating.
She said with the normal sarcastic ring in her voice. She tried to contort her face to match but she couldn’t quite keep a straight face. Jayson just takes the sarcasm in stride and fires back immediately.
Jayson Matthews: Hey, that's what you get in a relationship with me. I bet you didn't even read the fine print.
He smiled at her and kissed her on the cheek. She couldn't help but laugh a little at his “goofyness” but then she remembered a different thought. Sasha stops in her tracks and looks at Jayson, she seemed a bit worried and Jayson could tell right away.
Sasha Grey: Do you think Coach Nighthawk is going to be okay with all this? You know, us?
Jayson nods his head immediately.
Jayson Matthews: I don't see why not. But…
He stops in front of a specific closed door in the hallway.
Jayson Matthews: …only one way to find out.
He knocks on the door in usual door knocking rhythm and after a few moments you hear a muffled “hold on” and then shortly after the door opened and Nighthawk was standing on the other side. Naturally, the man of 1000 holds was happy to see his pupils.
Nighthawk: Jayson! Sasha! Oh it's so nice to see you two, come on in.
Jayson comes walking right into Nighthawks current “home away from home” at the rehab facility. He was getting around fairly decently in one of those giant leg and knee braces that gave Jayson a real robo-cop slash terminater vibes.
Jayson Matthews: It’s great to see you too, Coach. I should have came to see you sooner, but, I just couldn't bring myself to come. Well not without this.”
Jayson reaches up and unzips the track jacket to reveal the Invictus Championship wrapped around his waste. Nighthawk looks down and when he sees the title belt he looks at it in awe. Nighthawk watched as Jayson unstrapped the title from around his waste and he draped it over Nighthawks shoulder and smiled a genuine warm smile.
Jayson Matthews: I brought it home for you, coach.
The usual stoic demeanor of Nighthawk cracked a bit under the emotional pressure. Nighthawks eyes became pools as he looks as the silver title belt dangled over his shoulder.
Jayson Matthews: I stepped up in your place to challenge Bob. I wouldn't be where I am today without you. So this title is for you. The win against Bob. It was all dedicated to you.
Nighthawk couldn't help himself. He wrapped his arms around Jayson and the mentor and the student shared a hug. Sasha couldn't help but shed a tear or two at the touching moment.
Nighthawk: Thank you Jayson. Thank you so much.
He says as he pulls back, wiping a few tears from his eye and collecting himself. Nighthawk picks up the title belt and looks at it. He smiled and then puts it back on Jayson.
Nighthawk: But you are the champion now. Not only that but you did it without my help. I didn't think you were ready for such a challenge and I was wrong about that. And I couldn’t be more proud to say that. Watching you improve against Bob Pooler these past few weeks, I have watched you grow by leaps and bounds as a wrestler. I am not only honored, but privileged to be your teacher, Jayson.
This time it was my turn to cry. I would have been bawling like a baby if I wasn't trying to stay tough in front of my girlfriend. Hearing that from Nighthawk meant the world to me and it really only anchored my growing confidence even more. I knew he wasn't just saying all that to be nice. I've always known him to be quite honest about the things he thought and felt. That's why what came next was a bit of a blow.
Nighthawk: I am, however, not exactly thrilled about this.
He points at Jayson and Sasha who walks up closer to Jayson. She stood behind Jayson and looked a little pale.
Nighthawk: I don't condone gym relationships. They only lead to trouble.
Sasha hung her head low and slunked back behind Jayson. Jayson noticed her do this and he stands his ground.
Jayson Matthews: Well I’ll tell you what coach, this really doesn't feel like trouble. As far as I can tell, Sasha isn't trouble. And you know that I'm not that type of guy.
Nighthawk smiled and placed his arms in the air to show he was friendly.
Nighthawk: Hey, I said I don't condone it, I didn't say I wasn't happy for you.”
Nighthawk pats the Invictus title that was on Jayson’s shoulder.
Nighthawk: I look forward to you proving me wrong about this as well, champ.”
They all smile as the scene fades.
“Oh…My….God….”
We open up on Jayson Matthews with a Pistons jersey, a pair of sunglasses and the Invictus title around his waste.
“…Becky, look at this belt!”
He starts pointing at it and moving his hips as the beat starts playing in the background.
“It is so big. It must be like, one of those wrestlers guys, title belts.”
He does a quick spin.
“I like big belts and I cannot lie! You other wrestlers can't deny”
He starts dancing in place to the beat as he raps.
“That when a champ walks, with a belt around his waste, and he shoves it in your face you get- PUMPED!!!”
He starts humping in place. The music fades out shortly after and Jayson chuckles and pulls off the sunglasses.
“Ha ha, sorry….im just so damn excited and happy to be champ. It still doesn't feel real to me. But there it is. Just shining in the light, it's even got my name engraved on the name plate. I can't believe I won this championship….”
He holds up three fingers on his hand and holds the belt in place with his free hand.
“…for a freaking third time!
He shakes his head in disbelief.
“Not only that, but now I have the girl of my dreams at my side. I'm just so happy. But I know that what comes up must come down eventually and I know that somebody is going to lurking around the corner to try and rain on my parade. But luckily I'm going to carry an umbrella everywhere I go just to make sure I'm ready. I'm going to try to be ready for every challenge that comes my way. Because you know why?”
He starts jogging in place and and moving his arms in circles.
“Because, chugga-chugga. Chugga-chugga. Chooo-choooo!”
He nods his head in excitement and then grabs an imaginary intercom speaker.
“ Ghht, yeah uhhhhh this is your captain speaking…ahhhhhhh please keep your arms, legs, and other free hanging body parts inside the vehicle at all times because the Jayson Matthews Victory, gravy, Invictus and associates train is getting ready for take off once again.”
He smiled and rubs his palms together.
“Oh yeah, but you see folks, THIS TIME, there is a little extra riding on this train. That's right it’s Heir to the Throne season once and yet again and it's open to every person on the active roster. Do I want to win it? Of course I do, I'd love to earn another opportunity at the Imperial Championship but I'm going to try and keep my aspirations a tad bit more grounded here. I'm the Invictus champion and I know the next contender to my title will be revealed soon. Plus, even more, if somebody manages to pin any current champion on the roster that guy will earn even more points toward the big annual tournament. Sheesh!”
He shakes his head and wipes his brow.
“Man, I knew I had a target on my back because of this belt but thanks to heir to the Throne, there is literal points written in the rings. I gotta grow eyes in the back of my head because the challenges have already started coming in. Because this week I got called out by Will Fennel. The Pitbull! The suplex machine! And a pretty good friend of mine if I do say so myself. The last time he and I stepped into a ring against each we had a badass match and after it was all said and done, I picked up the victory!”
He tilts his head and grins.
“And I'm sure that you folks know by now that Will Fennel is quite competitive. I mean this one time we were playing monopoly. I managed to get all the greens and blues and he lands on Park Place and it was supposed to bust him. But get this….he offered me real money just so he get another time around the bored!”
He chuckles in surprise.
“So rest assured, when Will says he wants to get a win back from me, I know just how serious he is. And I know that Will is going to make it difficult for me. But if I learned anything from my war with Bob Pooler I learned that where there is a “Will” there is a way! “
He snickers at his own joke.
“I learned that if you want it bad enough, if your willing to put in the work, then there is a pretty good chance that you can figure out how to make it happen. And that's what I was going to do in our singles match but now that it's a tag match I still don't plan on changing my game plan. You are a good friend Will and no matter if you beat me or not I won't have a bad thing to say about you dude! Although I'm not happy that this match just became your specialty but I'm still going all guns blazing. And when I pin your shoulders to the mat for the second time, I'll still give you a rematch. I mean…”
He shrugs his shoulders and his eyes twinkle as he begins to joke.
“…why try to stop an easy win?”
He chuckles to himself.
“I'm sure he is going to hurt me for that one, ha ha.”
“Then that brings me to Will’s tag team partner. Mason St. Croix. Now I've been called a good guy and the heart and souls of IWF but this guy….he is a true hero.”
He salutes Mason through the camera.
“He is an American Hero. This guy has been to war. This guy has fought for our country! He was willing to sacrifice his life for this great amazing country of ours and I'm sitting here in my comfortable home arguing with my sister about wearing a turtleneck.”
Jayson looks up and glances back into the camera as if everyone was staring at him.
“I hate turtlenecks because when I wear one it just feels like a baby trying to choke me to death. If I gotta wear a backpack too then it feels like a muderous infant trying to kill me all day. Ugh, I can't stand it.”
He shudders at the thought.
“I'm sure everyone of us in this match can at least agree that you deserve respect. So thank you Mason, for all the sacrifices that you've made for this country.”
He stops and salutes again.
“But with all due respect Mr. St. Croix, I may respect and admire you for the true hero that you are….but I will not be intimidated by you. You may be an experienced trained killing machine and you may have all the winning streaks and the big title wins and everyone in the world talking about you and what your capable of accomplishing now that your back, but that still won't intimidate me. I may be considered a fairly successful joke to a lot of people. On paper against you I may look like a complete under dog even though I hold a championship now. But even with all that pressure working against me….I still will not be intimidated. Do you know why, Mason?”
Jayson steps forward toward the camera. His eyes dead set on the camera lens.
“Because I won't let myself be.”
He clenches his fist and shakes his head.
“I can't be. Not now. Not when I’m finally here.”
He grabs the title off his shoulder. He stares at it for a few moments before raising it toward the camera.
“Not while I have this. Because I'm the champ, and if that means one day I'll have to go toe to toe with Captain America and kick his red, white, and blue booty, well then I guess that's just how it will have to be, won't it Mason? You want those points?”
Jayson places the title back on his shoulder. Then looks into the camera with an aura of confidence we haven't seen from him in a long time.
“Come get them.”
He flips the title over to his other shoulder.
“And as for my partner, Ryan Shane….I heard what he had to say about me. Thing is Ryan, you may be Man of Steel champ and based on a few people's opinions, you hold the better title but I am one step ahead of you.”
Jayson grins and and pats his title.
“I'm the first ever three time male champion. That's something you'll never be able to do. Plus I just might be the better champion between us as well. In fact, as a fellow Detroit native, how about a “friendly” wager….I BET you that I will keep my title longer than you can keep yours. What do you say? First person to lose there title has to admit the other one is better on a live Sacrifice? What do you say? You can let me know whenever, and as for this Sunday….maybe you should just try to keep up….number two.”
Fade out on a smirking Jayson and his two fingers.
We open on Jayson Matthews as he is working out inside the Wrestle Factory. He does a few reps when suddenly he spots Sasha walking up toward him with her arms behind her back.
Sasha Grey: Hey!
She says with a big smile on her face as she leans in and kisses him.
Jayson Matthews: Hey you. What's up?
Sasha Grey: Well I just wanted to come by and thank you for sticking by me with Coach Nighthawk. I just really appreciated that. It really made this whole “us” thing feel a lot more comfortable.
Jayson sits up on the weight bench, his legs split on each side. Sasha sits down on the end and faces him.
Jayson Matthews: That’s just what I do, Sasha. Yeesh, I'm starting to think you really didn't read the fine print.
She giggles a bit and nods.
Sasha Grey: yeah well, I really appreciate it. I wanted to get you something.
She pulls her arm from behind her back and pulls back a box.
Jayson Matthews: You shouldn't have.
He takes the box, gently untied the ribbon and opens the box. He is touched by what he finds.
Jayson Matthews: You got me a stethoscope! I….wow….thank you.”
Sasha Grey: You were talking about it and-“
He didn't mean too, but he interrupted her.
Jayson Matthews: Can I listen to your heart?
She stares at him. Caught in the moment she simply nods. Jayson puts the device on and scoots closer to her. He puts the metal part to her chest and he could hear her heartbeat. He nods his head to the beat for a few moments. Then he looks up at her and smiled.
Jayson Matthews: It's a beautiful rhythm, just like I expected.
Sasha move the few inches closer and started kissing him passionately. In the moment, nothing truly mattered, but in the background, staring through the window, watching everything with anger in his eyes….was Buzz.
