Interlude #3 ~ "In Which Heaven Gains an Angel"
19 July 2017 + 1630 GMT
Silence. Stillness.
Peace. Tranquility.
Those were the things felt all around the living room inside Regina Kimble's house in the English country side, where we find Fiona McFly sitting on a leather sofa, flanked by her drummer Luke on one side and her husband, Jack Gaither, on the other. Sitting on the floor next to each other, we find Donnie and Eddie Mercury--the guitar-playing twin brothers--as they bowed their heads in prayer.
Fiona sighed as her eyes gazed upon her personal Bible, reading through and highlighting different passages with a pink highlighter as Jack gave her constant back rubs. Luke, Regina's son, closed his eyes and laid his head back, trying to catch a few Zs. It had been nearly 48 hours since Miss Kimble had fallen into a comatose state, and the group was very exhausted and sleep-deprived.
The door to Regina's bedroom, towards the end of the narrow corridor, was shut as a team comprised of in-house doctors and a minister all checked on her condition constantly. The day itself was rather damp with intermittent rain showers hitting the roof above. From a small docking station on the end table next to the sofa, we hear Fiona's iPhone's music player softly playing Queen's "Don't Try So Hard," one of Miss Kimble's favourite tracks from the Innuendo album along with "These Are the Days of Our Lives" and "The Show Must Go On."
Fiona's eyes panned up from her Holy Book, peering upon a small banner which featured a verse from the fourth chapter of First John. She turned her attention towards her husband, who also read the verse and nodded his head.
JACK GAITHER:
Miss Kimble's favorite verse of Scripture.
Fiona nodded solemnly as she thumbed through the pages before highlighting the passage in question as Jack, wanting to break the silence, recounts a time he had with his former teacher.
JACK:
Ya know somethin'...first day at kindergarten at recess I stood next to her, watchin' as the other kids were playin' and havin' a good time. Outta nowhere, I hear her tryin' to whistle, but the funny thing was...no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't get the darn tune right. She shooed me towards my classmates before I had the chance to ask her what it was...
Fiona mustered a sheepish chuckle and nodded.
FIONA MCFLY:
I heard the same song too, just before that kart race whilst I was living in Fredericksburg. What was that song? I can't remember the song...
Jack and Fiona closed their eyes, taking deep breaths as they both reflected silently. Luke began to softly whistle the song they were talking about--"Won't You Be My Neighbor?", the opening theme to Mister Rogers' Neighborhood--from beginning to end, leading everyone around him to eke out a warm smile and shed a tear as the door to Miss Kimble's room opened slowly. The minister, wearing a black suit with matching black tie and shoes, walked out into the living room as all eyes focused on his gravely demeanour.
He stood over the assembled group, making direct eye contact with each person as he delivered the news.
MINISTER:
Miss Regina Kimble passed away peacefully at a little over half-past four o'clock this afternoon. May the grace of God give you all peace, strength, and comfort, now and forever.
The room fell into a deep state of silence, a cold aura pulsating around Fiona and company as they all took a moment to let the minister's announcement sink into their souls. As a heavy downpour commenced outside, the realisation began to settle in as tears were shed and hugs were given by everyone that was gathered inside that house in the English countryside.
It was a time for hugs and for grieving...
...yet most important of all, it was a time for reflection--not on how Regina Kimble died, but how she lived her life.
As a loving mother of a man who would become a drummer in the music industry.
As a passionate mentor to a husand and wife striving to succeed in their own lives.
As a beloved educator to children that were eager to learn reading, writing, math...and friendship.
And as a loyal friend and true...to all.
