Last week I got put through a table.
And I'm pretty damn upset about it to tell you the truth.
I mean I’m not so mad that I was put through the table. Quite frankly, it's really just part of the job at this point. I've been put through countless tables. Almost too many, if you ask most people, Some weren't even wrestling related. One particular Thanksgiving dinner comes to my mind. But it's honestly my fault really, I should have passed the yams faster. But anyways, the point is that isn’t the first time I've ever been driven through a table and especially now that I am the Invictus champion, it sure as hell won't be the last. So I'm not really mad about that it's more about the “who”
Ulf Hednir….
I know he didn't ask for it from me, I know we don’t really know each other that much at all but I gave him the benefit of the doubt. It probably means nothing to him and his little Council buddies, but for him to put me through a table after he looked me in the eyes and said sorry….I don't know man it kind of hurt….. I guess I thought he was a good guy, ya know? But he was just surrounding himself with bad guys. I assumed that because of his beliefs he had a moral code that he was supposed to follow and that he could be reasoned with but I guess not. He wanted to put me through that table at Sacrifice! He wanted to send a message to me and Even though I was knocked out cold I still read the message loud and clear.
Ulf is just like them.
Maybe I deserved it a little bit, for getting into Ulf’s business and thinking the best of him? OK lesson learned. Ulf is just a no good rotten violent thug like all the rest of those terrible people doing Xaxier Cross’s bidding. He doesn't have morals, or any kind of decency at all he's just a good boy who does what he's told, and I guess that's what hurt even more then the powerbomb through the desk…it was that deep down inside…I really thought Ulf was different….I thought he could be a decent human being. I took a chance on this guy being good….and it really stings that I was wrong…
Nighthawk: Jayson what's wrong?
We open up inside the Rush Rehab Facility where Nighthawk had been staying in as he worked on healing his injured knee. He was in the middle of a yoga pose and even with one leg Nighthawk kept his balance with grace. It was a part of his rehab training and an overall good way to get in shape. Jayson seems to be struggling to keep his pose together. Just as Nighthawk asked him that question he loses it and crumbles to the floor. He’s back up to his feet momentarily and he shakes off the daze quickly.
Jayson Matthews: I don't know Coach… I think my cheese is all out of whack…”
Nighthawk raises a quizzical eyebrow.
Nighthawk: Pardon?
Jayson sighs as he takes a seat in a nearby chair.
Jayson Matthews: My cheese is off. I can’t concentrate on all this right now, I have too much on my mind.
Nighthawk: First off, I think you are talking about “chi”….
He pulls out another chair and hobbles over to sit down across from Jayson.
Nighthawk: You know you can talk to me about anything. Part of training is having a clear mind. If you can't concentrate then you can’t focus. So tell me what is on your mind?
Jayson Matthews: Its this whole Ulf Hednir thing….
The Invictus champ said with a sigh. Nighthawk leaned in to listen to his pupil.
Jayson Matthews: I just thought he was a good guy…
Jayson began to explain with a heavy voice. He pointed toward Nighthawk and himself for an example.
Jayson Matthews: …like you or I….I thought I could talk some sense into him…but I got beat up and put through a table for my troubles…”
He sighs and lowers his head. He was angry and frustrated and disappointed. He looked up at Nighthawk, who was still listening intently, and just gave up with his eyes.
Jayson Matthews: Guess I was wrong on that one, eh Coach?”
Nighthawk shrugged his shoulders and nodded his head.
Nighthawk: Perhaps you are. Maybe last week on Sacrifice was a sign for you to just accept what you can’t change and let it go. Ulf is just bad news and you really should just move on and focus on your training.
Jayson nods his head, agreeing with the wise words coming from the man of 1000 holds.
Nighthawk: or maybe you are not wrong. Maybe Ulf is a good guy, but he's just being lead by terrible men? Maybe instead of “staying out of his business” maybe now is the time that he needs you more then ever?
Jayson leans back in his chair and rubs his chin as he thinks about what Nighthawk said.
Nighthawk: It’s hard to say really. But what I do know is that some times warriors must fight. Sometimes when they don’t wish too, or even against people they may not wish to fight against. is in there nature. But it is always up to the warrior how[\u] he fights and on whatever battlefield he chooses.”
Jayson’s eyes squint in confusion and he scratches his head. Often times Coach Nighthawks lessons sounded like riddles to him at first. Add another to the list.
Jayson Matthews: But I mean….how do you know when it's right to fight or just walk away?
Nighthawk just smiled warmly.
Nighthawk: You have to trust what's in here.
He points at his chest, where his heart would be.
Nighthawk: A true man of a thousand holds just knows. Because he follows his heart, he follows his convictions, he trusts his gut instincts.”
Jayson’s eyes go wide and he gets goosebumps when Nighthawk mentioned gut instincts. Just like the one he had about Ulf originally.
Nighthawk: Always trust your convictions, Jayson. Always follow what your heart says in those situations. Heart is what separates a true warrior from all the rest.
My mind was blown. Coach had a habit of doing that. I guess I have a lot to think about.
Nighthawk: Feel better?
Jayson nods his head.
Jayson Matthews: Yeah. I do.Thanks Coach!
Jayson looks around the room.
Jayson Matthews: What's the word on that cheese though? I'm starving.
Fade on Nighthawk rolling his eyes and chucking to himself.
“It’s no secret that I broke into this business thanks to Steve Awesome.”
The camera comes to life to show Jayson Matthews staring back at it.
“Yeah that's right, I got into this business because Steve was porking my sister. If I remember correctly, he didn't even want to do it. My sister, Mandi, had to beg him to get me that chance. He said he didn't want some little twerp tagging along in his shadow.”
He chuckles at the irony.
“Years later I'm still in his shadow and no matter what I do I can't get out. I could win this Invictus Championship three more times and people will still bring up Steve. Either I haven't made a big enough impact on wrestling on my own or Steve’s shadow may just be too big to climb out of, but regardless I'm still here, doing everything I can. Bring in his shadow may have had its benifits. Because of him, I could get a job anywhere. Because of him I have credentials. And because of him, I've met some interesting people. People like Jake “The Ace” Conway and his lovely wife.”
“Oh yeah. Ace and Steve go way back. At some instances it seemed liked they were extended family. Those guys have been through some things, but always remained friends through it all and of course I was there for those events. You know I was in the background, being ignored and tormented, and I expected it from Steve, being an asshole is usually his style, but Ace never really cared about me. Not that I expected him too, I just found it funny that as soon as I start making my name in IWF you suddenly start remembering it Ace. Even after I beat you for that world championship, one that I publicly renounced by the way. I don't want to represent that company after the scandal that ended it, even after that it took you until now? I mean dude, I lived with Steve and Mandi. You've been to there house, you and I have been in the same room before!
But now that your chasing Andrew, trying to paint yourself as a hero in this business and your looking for a little PR you decide to finally praise my name. Well I'll tell you what Ace, those kind words you said about me were nice. I was honored that a guy like you would take the time to say that about me but you'll excuse me if I take those kind words with a grain of salt. You’ll forgive me is this Ace doesn't seem to match the old Ace that I used to know. Those words you said about me, they may be genuine and again I appreciate them if they are but it's certainly not the Ace I'm used to, or even the one I was preparing to face. See the Ace I knew would be looking past me.
He’d be looking through me.
On his way to try to capture the Imperial Championship.
Because he is The Ace.
And I'm just one of the little people that he steps over on his way to the top. Well it's too bad that The Ace’s big climb back to the top of the mountain is going to come colliding with the Jayson Matthews Victory, gravy and associates Train this Sunday night on Sacrifice and I have to say that it's been going harder then ever these days. And your going to learn Ace that despite possibly thinking your going to get a “good match” out of this little underdog because your the Ace and the Ace always wins, your gonna realize that I'm much more then just a little underdog.”
He slowly shakes his head.
“You see, I'm the one thing that trumps even the Ace….
He takes a step toward the camera. He clenches his fist and points to himself with his thumb.
“You see…..I'm the “wild card”…..”
He nods his head in excitement.
“Oh yeah, because I've been making a name for myself lately by doing things that people think I shouldn't be able to do. For every dozen crippling losses, there is one miracle that I pull off despite everyone thinking I can't. Nobody was really paying attention but last week I pinned the Imperial Champion, Andrew Jacobsen. A month or two ago, I managed to pin the last world champion, Cable Arcane. I've pinned the last two Imperial champions, I'm slowly becoming the greatest never was there ever was, Hell, I have more of a claim to the Imperial Title then you do right now. But that's fine, I'll get my opportunity just like I've gotten everything else I have. By earning it and certainly not hiding behind a little girl.”
But make no mistake Ace, just because I don't have the biggest opinion of you doesn't mean I don't respect you. I've watched you for years in the ring whipping all the piddly asses not named Kane, Verona or Awesome, so I know that your capable of a lot. I know that you definitely command that veteran status. I definitely understand what you bring to the table but I'm not like everyone else Ace. I'm the wild card. The one thing that stops even an Ace.
And this week on Sacrifice I'm going to bump you off the top spot.
And again, I can't thank you enough for the kind words, and if you actually meant them then I suppose that is a plus, but this week you are the won that needs to win. Do I want to win? Of course, I'd love to see the look on your face, but I don't need to win. If I lose this match, then I go on my merry way and everything stays the same….but if you lose….well I mean this is your journey, Jake. This is your mountain to climb. Your building up to the big rematch against Andrew not me so I don't know how bad it's going to suck for you when I knock you off your path. But I'm coming to knock you down Ace. Rest assured on that Ace, the young underdog is going to go bananas all over your face.
Jayson smiled mischievously toward a man he respects but would just like to punch in the mouth.
“Your welcome for the inspiration”
He chuckles out loud.
“No thanks nessicary for this ass whippin”
He smiled as the scene fades.
Jayson was working out. Lost in thought over his conversation he had with Nighthawk that he almost didn't recognize the man that came stumbling into the gym next.
Jayson Matthews: Puke!? Oh my god are you alright?
That was Buzz’s friend. One that used to help him pick on me. I hadn't seen him in awhile but I'm pretty sure his face isn't normally this swollen and bruised and bloody. He almost collapses in front of me.
Jayson Matthews: What happened to your face?
Puke tries not to cry. Whatever it was, it really messed him.
Puke: it was Buzz….he did this….
Jayson looks on in shock as another class mate comes running over to help Puke with his wounds.
Puke: He wanted this to be a message for you Jayson….”
Jayson Matthews: What message?
Puke: He’s coming for you….and he's looking for a fight!
Jayson watches on in shock as the scene fades.
And I'm pretty damn upset about it to tell you the truth.
