On Sunday morning a video was posted online that quickly went viral showing IWF Superstar Mason St. Croix not only appearing but competing at an independent wrestling show near Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The event, entitled Back to School Bash, was held by Carolina Pro, whose promoter is Frank Haggard, a long time friend of St. Croix and a fellow former United States Army Ranger.
When St. Croix learned through social media in late July that the event had become a charity event for the Haggard family after their twelve year old son Eric had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, he immediately contacted IWF management for permission to participate. IWF gladly granted St. Croix permission and Mason reached out to the Haggards. Carolina Pro began promoting the show with St. Croix on the poster.
The show which was held this past Saturday featured eleven matches including the Main Event Battle Royal featuring St. Croix as one of the the twenty participants. In the video, which has more than seven million views in under three days, St. Croix is in the ring after eliminating what was assumed to be the final entrant in the match when he stopped the referee from raising his hand and asked for a microphone.
“There's one more fighter left in this match.” St. Croix stated in the video before pointing to Eric Haggard who was seated in the front row with his mother.
A few of the eliminated wrestlers who were still at ringside helped Eric into the ring and St. Croix bent down and whispered something to him before standing next to the ropes. The nervous boy remained still for a few moments before St. Croix stuck his chin out.
“Let's see what you got!” Mason exclaimed.
Eric swung and almost missed but being the professional he is St. Croix sold it well and fell backwards out of the ring. The referee then held up Eric Haggard’s hand and the ring announcer announced him as the winner of the match before St. Croix and the rest of the wrestlers came back into the ring to celebrate with him.
A picture of the ecstatic little boy being carried around the ring on the wrestlers shoulders made the cover of the local paper and when asked what the moment meant to him Frank Haggard had the following to say.
“What Mason St. Croix did for my son and our family last night means more to me than anything he did when we fought side by side in Iraq.” Haggard said before adding, “He's a hero in every sense of the word.”
