Seth Evans is lying on his bed within his hotel room in Shanghai. The sun crept from behind the curtains illuminating the white linen bed sheet, while Seth seemed at peace in his slumber remaining still.
The roar of the crowd still rang in my mind as I recalled back to the night that I stepped into the ring with Steve Awesome; I recall each strike that we landed on each other… how we were able to read each other, and telegraph each attack. How we dodged. How we matched move for move. I felt that we didn’t just have the entire crowd on their feet, but I imagined all our colleagues crowding around monitors in the back arguing amongst each other who was going to walk out on top. I felt a sensation in my leg as I dreamed of my foot connecting with the Bulltrue on Steve Awesome, and knowing that my tank was running on fumes, all I could do was fall… fall over Steve and connect with the one. Two. Three. The bell sounds, and…
From the nightstand comes an artificial light that illuminates the room, as his smartphone begins to vibrate on the surface; Seth Evans suddenly jolts to a seated position and glances toward the sunlight that crept from the edges of the curtain to try to determine the time of day. He drew in a deep breath and lunged his hand forward to retrieve his phone to see who it was that was calling him.
Andrew Jacobsen he thought to himself, before placing his thumb over the green button indicating that he would answer the phone. Upon answering the phone, he puts it on speaker and sets it back down on the nightstand.
“Hello?” said Seth Evans, rubbing his own eyes before also standing up and walking toward the curtains. He was wearing fitted sweatpants that he primarily used for sleeping, but was shirtless as he reached for the curtain rod to pull it open allowing the natural light to brighten up his room.
“Are you still sleeping? We’re in Shanghai! We have places to see! People to see!” said Andrew Jacobsen excitedly from the other end of the phone.
Seth drew in a deep breath, seemingly in awe over the view that he had of the Shanghai Tower, and he admired it momentarily before turning back away and toward the phone to reply back to Andrew Jacobsen, responding within seconds, “Yeah… yeah… Sorry, the time change.”
“We’re down in the lobby! Get down here!” demanded Andrew.
“Alright, alright, I’m on my way.”
The phone clicked, and Seth looked toward the skyline one more time from the view of his hotel room. He smiled again before walking to get fully dressed before heading down to meet with the rest of the crew.
It felt amazing to be caught up again with the IWF… it wasn’t too long ago that I shocked the world, my peers, and even myself, by defeating Steve Awesome in front of a sold out crowd. It had been years since I had stepped foot into a ring, and while I know that we took each other to our limits and it could have gone either way, I showed the world that my ability was still on par with the best that this industry has ever seen. There was no doubt in my mind that Steve Awesome was among the best to step foot in the ring. With Andrew Jacobsen on my side to help me, there's no better team. Step two.
“I did exactly what I said I was going to do with Steve Awesome the last time that I stepped into the ring. Steve Awesome, he is just one of those people… on his worst night…” I hesitated and licks my lips before continuing, truly feeling inspired by how great of a competitor Steve Awesome has been throughout his career, “On his worst night, he is still better than ninety-nine percent of the roster. We tore the roof down in Madrid, and I showed the world that I do still have what it takes to stand among the greatest; to tell the world that I am… one of the greatest…”
Perhaps it was too early for me to proclaim myself as one of the greatest. After all, the world would never care for the people that never reached the top of the mountain… it never mattered how close they got to the top of the mountain, it only ever mattered who actually got there. And I had to show myself, and show the world, that I could make it to the top. And if I could make it to the top, there was no reason that anyone else could not do the same.
“My past has only shown the opposite of that. I’ve discussed it before, but I cannot let myself forget! I cannot let myself forget that no matter how many times that I reached to face some of the best that this industry has ever seen, I have never been at the top of the food chain.... It does not matter the people that I hang out with, or the people who I call my friends, because they do not speak for me. They do not represent me. That is precisely why I cannot allow myself to live in the past! Angel: he’s behind me. nCw: it’s behind me. Road to the Gold: it’s behind me. Steve Awesome? He’s behind me!
I need to look to my future… I need to look to where I am going. Where I want to be. And what do I want to be? My mind has never truly changed about that. I want to be the very best, like no one ever was…” I hesitated letting the rest of the song play through my head albeit quickly before continuing, “It is in my future! I know it's my destiny! To enter the IWF Hall of Fame! To even become the Imperial Champion! But now let me not get too far ahead of myself… Yes, I am looking to my end goals. But now let me look to my next opponent: Todd Williams!”
I thought about my opponent momentarily, thinking of the similarities that he and I had with one another. I nodded my head a few times before speaking for the first time about my opponent, who I did have a past encounter with.
“Todd Williams, I feel that you and I do share quite a lot in common. Both of us, we come back… we get that little momentum… and then without any such warning, the world does not know where we disappeared off to. Both of us have had so much promise! Both of us have promised the world, and promised ourselves, that we would become the single greatest wrestler to ever enter the industry-- both of us have promised that we would become the Imperial Champion… both of us have this strong ambition to prove that we belong.
We belong.
We belong with the people that are the likes of Steve Awesome.
We belong with the people that are the likes of Angel.
We belong with the people that are the likes of Cable Arcane.
We belong with the people that are the likes of Andrew Jacobsen.
The list goes on, and on, but the only point that truly matters is that we long to prove to the world and ourselves that WE just BELONG! But both of us have had this lingering cloud over us: both of us have left a stain on our own history… all our promise… all our skill… no matter how good we ever thought we were, we have done absolutely nothing.”
I said with a sense of exasperation, but quickly shook the thought from my mind knowing that I had already set it in my mind that the past was in the past, and all I could do was look forward. All Todd could do was look forward.
“This is our chance, Todd! Heir to the Throne! This is our chance to show the world that we do truly belong! I know, you have the same thought as me… the exact same thought… it’s do or die. It’s time to pull out all the stops-- it’s time to do what you must, and pull all the tricks that you have to do. It’s time to force your opponent to make their mistakes and capitalize on every chance that we have in front of us. But that is where we differ, Todd, because you sound like you are doing this… for no one… but yourself…” I said, not able to help but sounding disappointed, “That is why you seem to be willing to take things a step further. Are you going to go for that extra leverage? Are you going to pull the tights? Are you going to use the ropes? Are you going to hold on for the extra seconds to ensure to take my air away? Are you going to hit a low blow? What chances are you going to take, Todd, that could bend the favor in your direction…”
I thought about it a moment, but shrugged my shoulders.
“It’s do or die, Todd. You are going to go to the extents you feel that you must to go into Heir to the Throne and show the world that you belong, but I’m not going to… I have something more to prove, not just to myself, but to the fans. To the future! I have the same ambition as you: to go forward… but I have a different way in which I need to go forward. I’m not going to go to whatever extents that you feel you need to go to… when I do this, when I walk out as the winner of this match and get entered into Heir to the Throne, there is going to be no doubt-- no doubt in the minds of the fans, no doubt in the minds of our peers; there will be no doubt in your mind, Todd, that when I have my arm raised as the winner: I will have earned it!
It doesn’t matter how I do it.
Whether I hit you with Bulltrue.
Whether I get you with the Extermination.
Or whether I get you locked into Headcase.
There is absolutely nothing negative that I can say about you, Todd, because I see so much of me in you! Because we have had the same story from the past… the same ambition going forward. The same talent. The ability to step into the ring with anyone, the ability to step in the ring with EVERYONE and give the fans one of the greatest spectacles that some could not even fathom! You have been a great competitor throughout all your years in this industry, Todd… and I commend you for everything you’ve done. I look forward to the battles that we will wage with each other long into the future when our names join the rest as not only household names, but as legends.
We both have our own ambitions. We both have our own goals in mind… We both are willing to put our bodies on the line until we have absolutely nothing left to give just to ensure that we are going to walk into Heir to the Throne with seven up-and-coming talent. Not just up-and-coming talent, but men who are younger than us… hungrier than us… men who are longing to create a name for themselves by earning a chance for the Imperial Championship, and some of them, for the very first time.
We both want to walk into that tournament.
But the unfortunate part for us, Todd, is only one of us can… only one of us will march into that tournament and have a chance to go through this tournament to have a chance to face the Imperial Champion. As convinced as you are that it is going to be you, and as much as I hate to take anything away from you: it will not be you.
Mark my words, Todd… when we walk down to that ring on Sacrifice, and we both lay all our cards on the table. When we are both tired, and the crowd is chanting for more, but one of us simply has to give. It’s not going to be me that does. I am going to stand at the end of the night, in the middle of the ring, with my arm raised as the winner! My courage will pull me through. I will be announced as one of the competitors for Heir to the Throne! And when all of that is said and done, I will be standing as the Imperial Champion… the time is right. Something that should have been a long time ago. But something that I have not earned. Until now.
Mark my words.”
The scene goes back to the hotel lobby where Andrew Jacobsen can be seen sitting; Andrew gets to his feet and a smile comes to his face when his eyes land on Seth Evans who has come out from the elevator, wearing blue denim shorts, a long sleeve vintage “UMADBRO” shirt, and a backwards cap. Seth tucks his smartphone into his pocket as he and his friend embrace in a hug.
“It’s been weeks again, man! Are you planning on coming back full time?” asked Andrew Jacobsen.
After the two shared a hug, they walked toward the exit of the hotel lobby while Seth Evans replied back to his friend, “I am planning on it. I'll battle every day, I’ll take every challenge, to claim my rightful place. I just have a lot of my own affairs to deal with, but they'll be done soon, so all I can do is come back in short bursts… for now…” he said with a smirk.
“Hey,” Andrew replies, “You’re still in the running for Heir to the Throne even after one match! You chose quite the opponent, and made it count when you absolutely needed to… is that why you chose to come back this time?”
Seth shrugs his shoulders slightly, but nods his head as the two exit the lobby and are now on the streets of Shanghai, “Yeah, more or less. I knew H-T-T-T was coming up, but wasn’t sure that I would be close to being put in it. And I figured that I couldn’t let Todd get this shot without a fight.”
“If you put up half the fight you did with Steve Awesome, you’ve already got this win. That match was completely insane!”
“Yeah, I don’t know where I mustered the strength to go on… I don’t know where Steve mustered it…” Seth Evans sounds genuinely surprised, but does still have a tone of excitement and happiness over his memory of that victory. But he knew that he had to follow it up with a second victory. “Oh well, that’s all behind me now. It’s time to look forward, and when I beat Todd Williams, friend…” Seth pats Andrew on the shoulder, “I’m on my way for that belt of yours.”
Andrew Jacobsen had an uncharacteristic smirk on his face, almost as if he felt cocky against his friend but it was clear that the two were able to throw a few cracks at one another, “If it’s you that I have to worry about coming out of Heir to the Throne, I’m going to go ahead and say I like my odds.”
Andrew strides a few steps ahead of Seth as he laughed, and Seth Evans shook his head as Andrew had gotten the best of him with that small exchange of words, and he could not think of a comeback straight away. Instead, he pauses and retrieves his phone from his pocket and clicks a few things on it: the sound of Pokemon Go can be heard opening.
“You still play that? Come on, the rest of the group already went without us. Helicopter tour of the city!” Andrew Jacobsen shouted back from further ahead, and Seth hurried to catch up.
“Sounds like a blast… haven’t seen Shanghai in a long time,” said Seth Evans as he continued behind his friend, thinking forward; if he could manage to defeat Todd Williams then it would be his friend that could be ahead of him. It brought a smile to his face as he thought of the possibilities of finally going toe-to-toe with Andrew Jacobsen with the top tier belt on the line; a vision he dreamed of doing since the two had become friends in New Championship Wrestling. When the two had been battling in the X-Division. They could very well be main eventing now. Seth began humming the Pokemon Theme to himself as the scene pans up toward the sky before fading out on the sky and the Pokemon theme song plays in its entirety.
I wanna be the very best,
Like no one ever was.
To catch them all is my real test,
To train them is my cause,
I will travel across the land,
Searching far and wide.
Teach Pokemon to understand
The power that's inside!
Pokemon, (gotta catch them all) its you and me
I know its my destiny
Pokemon, oh, you're my best friend
In a world we must defend
Pokemon, (gotta catch them all) a heart so true
Our courage will pull us through
You teach me and I'll teach you
(Po-ke-mon) Gotta catch 'em all
Yeah!
Every challenge along the way
With courage I will face
I will battle every day
To claim my rightful place,
Come with me, the time is right
There's no better team
Arm in arm we'll win the fight
It's always been our dream!
Pokemon!
(Gotta catch 'em all)
It's you and me
I know it's my destiny
Pokemon!
Oh, you're my best friend,
In a world we must defend.
