“This is the time of year that you see people make a name for themselves… You have two champions, and one former champion, in Jayson Matthews, Ryan Shane, and Mason St. Croix competing in Heir to the Throne to prove to the world that they are ready to elevate themselves to the Imperial Championship; you have two new people in Ulf Hednir, and Dean Harper-- so young! So talented! So thirsty! They are here to show the world that not only are they going to dominate within their first year in the industry, but they are going to be the ones carrying this company into its future with how young they are, and to achieve so much… just to be entered into Heir to the Thrones is a feat that not every person in the back can say. Then you have the rest of us: Kole Kaos, Jason Sandman, and Chris Card-- who have been around the world several times, but have yet to win a championship within the confines of the Imperial Wrestling Federation.”
Seth Evans is sitting in a room that looks similar to the throne room from Game of Thrones, with the Iron Throne in the middle; Seth Evans found himself sitting on the throne as he rubbed his palms together while staring toward the ground lost within his own mind, thinking of who he would battle; who earned the chance to step into Heir to the Throne; what limits he would be taken to to ensure that he walked out as the winner.
I chuckled to myself while considering all of these competitors… all of these warriors… that I felt honored to share the ring with this Sunday, to battle in what has become one of the most sacred tournaments throughout the entire industry. Heir to the Throne. There was no denying in my mind that I longed to win this tournament. That I longed to be the heir to the throne.
“One thing,” I said, lifting my head to look toward the camera, “that we all need to keep in mind is that we all already have done something great. We all already stand out among the Imperial Wrestling Federation as the absolute best! We have the chance to make our dreams finally come true, like Joe Everyman when he won the first Heir to the Throne and shocked the world by being the first ever to capture the Imperial Championship! He stood among people like Cable Arcane, Lex Sense, and Mike Laszlo, and he walked out with the Imperial Championship in hand, and for the first time in his career, was the man to beat. We have the chance of just showing the world that we belong, like Mike Laszlo in the second Heir to the Throne! The world saw how it ended, unfortunately, and Mike Laszlo did not go on to win the Imperial Championship after winning Heir to the Throne, but it was enough to show the world that he did belong in the main event with the likes of Cable Arcane, the likes of Roberto Verona, the likes of Spike Kane, and even the likes of Angel! And he ultimately would go on to win the Imperial Championship! Whether you’re like Malaki Toala and trying to get back into the main event. Whether you’re Cable Arcane and exploding into the main event scene to become arguably one of the greatest Imperial Champions in history of the Imperial Wrestling Federation.”
I tapped my fingers on one of the blades of the Iron Throne, and considered the history that Heir to the Throne had. Any man could look at it and see the track record for Heir to the Throne winners has been fifty-fifty; Joe Everyman won, Cable Arcane won.
“Regardless of what the outcome has been for the Heir to the Throne winner, one thing remains true: we have had thirteen different Imperial Champions since the IWF first opened their doors. All of which are great, and you cannot take anything away from any single one of them! But Heir to the Throne? We have only had four! Heir to the Throne is a once a year thing, whereas the Imperial Championship will always be there! Another thing that rings true for the Heir to the Throne: your future is what you make it.
We can take a good, hard look at the two who did not win: Mike Laszlo, and Malaki Toala. Both of them are great competitors, both of them are former Imperial Champions. But when did Mike Laszlo get his title? When did Malaki Toala get his? The truth is that Malaki was a former Imperial Champion walking into Heir to the Throne; he was a former Man of Steel Champion walking into Heir to the Throne…
Mike Laszlo, on the other hand? He had never won the Imperial Championship. Although he won Heir to the Throne, and lost his title match, he went on to become the Imperial Champion at a later date! What about Malaki? Now, I know I have not been around for a couple of years, but from what I can see… Malaki has not done anything since winning Heir to the Throne, while Mike Laszlo has done that.
That is why I must back up my argument that your future is what you make it to be! Whether you walk out at the end of this tournament as the brand new Imperial Champion or not, you need to keep marching forward. You need to keep looking ahead to your next goal. You need to keep your head high! And all of us-- not just the winner, not just the runner-up, will all make a bright future for all of ourselves. We have done so much, so very much, just by earning the right to fight in Heir to the Throne. None of us have an easy path ahead of us. We are facing the absolute best that the IWF has to offer-- the absolute best that have never won the Imperial Championship!
It’s time.
For one of us to shine.”
I felt that fire burning inside of me, knowing that this was the best opportunity that I was going to have ever since I defeated Angel many years ago in an Imperial Championship match, but had to laugh it off to myself as I recall the disqualification. This was my chance. This was our chance.
“All of us have our own reasons for why we want to walk out of this as the winner. Some of us is more about greed… we want the Imperial Championship, and do you want to know something? There is absolutely nothing wrong with that! There is nothing wrong with stepping into that ring, and thinking that you’re going to get what’s yours! Now, do you wanna know why there’s nothing wrong with that mentality? Because you’re still walking down to that ring, and you are still earning your shot to go forward in Heir to the Throne. You are still earning your shot to battle for the Imperial Championship. Nothing is being given to you! Nothing is being given to any of us! All we have done is earn it! Some of us are wanting to just make a name for ourselves; someone like me, is just wanting to prove to the world that I do belong with the crowd that I claim to be a part of.
And here’s the kicker for all of us: none of us will give in. None of us will give anything less than our absolute best walking into Heir to the Throne, and none of us are going to walk out of that ring with anything left in the arena… we are going to give, and give, and give, and give, until there is nothing left for us to give!
Our blood,
Our sweat,
Our tears,
Will stain that ring this Sunday. And none of us will be able to walk out of that ring with any shame-- perhaps regret, but that regret should not be there because none of us can regret that we went out and gave our all! We gave until there was nothing left to give! There is nothing to regret!”
Why me? I hesitated momentarily, knowing that some of the best IWF had to offer got this opportunity to fight in Heir to the Throne, and knew that all of us were incredibly talented… Now, I had to ask myself: why me? What was going to set me apart from everybody else? What would be my drive to ensure that I walked out as the winner? And possibly even as the Imperial Champion.
“I have said it before, and I will say it again: the past is the past, and all that I need to concern myself with is the future. The future that I vision for myself-- an Imperial Champion. A Man of Steel Champion. An Invictus Champion. An Heir to the Throne winner! A Hall of Famer! There is quite the list of feats that I must accomplish before I will be able to earn the right to call myself any of that, and I haven’t done a damn thing…” I said with a chuckle, “I have not won one single championship, I have not won Heir to the Throne-- I haven’t even previously been entered in Heir to the Throne-- that is what I recognize about myself. And that’s what I will change about myself. Come Legacy, I know that I am stepping into the ring with the best that the IWF has to offer, and while I know that all of us are capable of walking out with this title shot…
I am not allowing myself to walk out without it! It’s time that I do more than bark-- it’s time that I do more than promise…
Actions.
Actions speak louder than words, and it’s time that I start doing ACTIONS to prove to this industry that I was never a never-was; it’s time that I start proving to this industry that I belong! That all starts this Sunday at Legacy! That all starts by me winning Heir to the Throne-- that all starts with me stepping into the ring with my best friend, and fighting for the biggest prize that this company-- that this industry-- will ever know.
Legacy.
I will stand at the end as Heir to the Throne.”
I let my hand glide across the Iron Throne one more time, and nod my head before standing up from it. I keep my eyes locked on it as I walk backward away from it.
There seems to be commotion buzzing throughout the streets of Tokyo; vehicles are slowing at one particular spot, and many of the pedestrians are turning in the direction of the blaring horns-- people are leaning out from their vehicles and cheer toward the spectacle that they have laid their eyes on. Seth Evans is dressed in a full Spartan suit from the Halo video-game series, all of the gear appears to be very authentic. The sound of clicking cameras can be heard as people snap pictures with their smartphones and actual cameras, and even a news station seems to have taken notice as some of the reporters are trying to report the situation. Seth Evans has the helmet of the Spartan suit tucked under his arm as he marches forward with a broad smile on his face, and he nods to a couple of the fans that are making a path for the IWF superstar. While walking down the road, Xavier Cross is seen walking by sipping from a Starbucks cup… he blinks a few times to ensure that he is seeing everything correctly, but then almost drops his Frappuccino as he walks alongside Seth Evans.
“Umm… Hey, Seth,” says Xavier Cross, as Seth Evans nods his head to him to acknowledge his presence, with a little hesitation, confused by what Seth Evans is wearing, “What are you doing?”
“Just going for a walk, Xavier,” Seth said with a smile, waving and greeting many of the fans that are surrounding him.
“But… why are you dressed like that?” inquired Xavier Cross.
Seth Evans stops where he’s standing, and many of the news casters have come forward with their microphones as if he were answering one of their own questions. Xavier Cross is getting shoved by some of the people, and shoves back, then reaches back as if he’s about to hit one of them and the man quickly retreats from him screaming something about Godzilla.
“Xavier Cross, I am glad that you have asked me that question. I have had a saying for a while, before I disappeared from the Imperial Wrestling Federation: be the hero. Be the hero! We our heroes, Xavier Cross; we are heroes to the next generation of society, and the best thing that we can do with the power to be those heroes is to influence it to become a better, a brighter future that the entire world can enjoy. We will have people stepping in to assist the police forces around the world, we will have people stepping in to stop the fires, we will have people taking career paths in hospitals, or as doctors, to search for cures of specific diseases that we have been unable to cure. We will have the future looking to what they can do to bring society forward rather than being stuck in constant warfare! The list goes on of what we are capable of doing, Xavier, just by encouraging the world to be something more… to be a hero. Do what’s right even in the face of adversity.
We must do more than just telling people to do what is right; we must do what is right. We must commit to action! That is why I am wearing this: because the Master Chief, the Spartans from Halo, have always represented to me what a hero is. What a hero should be. Sacrificing themselves for the benefit of society, going against evil even when the odds are stacked against you.
Actions speak louder than words, and children-- the future of our society-- are going to recognize the actions we did! Not the words we said! That is why I have decided to suit up similar to a Spartan, because it represented what a hero was to me, to hopefully inspire and represent what a hero should be to the future.
That is why when I walk into Heir to the Throne, against the very best that the Imperial Wrestling Federation has to offer-- much like your Council, Cross,” said Seth while patting Xavier Cross on the shoulder, who smiled in turn, “I know what goes through the minds of people entering these types of tournaments, as I am no stranger to it-- I was the runner up back in New Championship Wrestling for the Road to the Gold tournament, and back then: I was willing to pull anything to win! If I had to cheat, I would have. But it didn’t matter because it was not my night that night. With that being said, I do believe that Legacy IS my night! And I am going to show the world, show everyone in the back, that you do NOT have to agree to win by whatever means necessary; you can go out there with sportsmanship… and you can win… you just have to be willing to work twice as hard, and good will prevail.
Be the hero.”
Seth Evans nods his head to the camera and smiles as Xavier Cross nods his head a few times, agreeing that Seth had made some fair points. Xavier Cross taps the helmet.
“Can I wear the helmet?”
Seth looks up as if to question himself, and the scene goes out momentarily. As it fades back in, Xavier Cross and Seth Evans are both marching down the streets of Tokyo; Xavier Cross has the Spartan helmet on while Seth Evans is wearing the rest of the armor looking as if he is about to go to a cosplay convention. The crowd is still surrounding them as the scene goes out for good.
