The camera comes on to Vivienne sitting cross legged on a large bed with a small table in front of her where a candle with the name hidden sits in front of her. She is wearing a grey shirt with the words MAD AS HELL on it.
“Hi Imperial Wrestling Federation. How have you been?”
She tucks a loose piece of hair behind her ear.
“I made it to the Survival of the Fittest match. Despite the odds I made it past Sara Garcia, Rayne and Charity Crowne. Not as clear a victory as I would have liked and I did get one of Charity’s moves to the head so I figure we are pretty even.”
Viv gives a sheepish smile.
“If you’re still upset about how things turned out, Charity Crowne, I have no problem doing a rematch at some point. I wish your head had been a little more focused on me but I’m not sorry I took the pin while you were ignoring me. Regardless of how it happened I earned my spot here. No more being mistaken for a personal assistant. I’m in the main event!”
Viv uses two fingers and gestures at herself with a big smile.
“This is all I’ve been training for my whole life. This moment. The chance to get a title shot on a paper view? How could I not be as pumped as possible? Regardless of everything else going on in my life. I am super pumped to have made it this far. I have my eyes on the belts and I’m going to throw every inch of myself into walking out of that ring with a belt.”
Viv sits forward slightly.
“I meant every word I said last week. Our division is being held hostage by the women of The Pack. We as the Diamonds division have been struggling to get our belts out of the hands of monsters for a while. Before I was even here, I know that. What do I know of fighting monsters, right? I wasn’t here when Eternity was here. I wasn’t here when Rowan was actively hunting through the female rooster. I’ve only had to deal with Maxine.”
Viv takes a deep breath.
“I have no doubt in my heart that by the end of this event we will at least dethrone one of them. I might not have been your personal favorite to win the fatal four way but I am going to try to make everyone proud when I enter that ring.”
Viv beams.
“Which brings me to this event! Survival of the Fittest. How cool is it that we all made it here? I know this event has rarely ever had a title change hands during it but I feel really good about this year. How could I not be considering my team mates?”
Viv giggles.
“Shall I start with the male side? Gentleman first.”
Viv leans back, relaxed.
“We have Spike Kane. I might not have followed his career before. I might find some of his methods a little uncomfortable to watch. But… I absolutely believe in redemption. I believe there is good in everyone. He is trying to find a way to get there and I applaud his efforts. I might not be full on ready to join the hashtag IBeleiveInSpikeKane right now but I do think he’s a good person. I’m happy to have him on my side.”
Viv nods.
“Ryan Shane… uh, you seem to at least be driven. I don’t like your methods, admittedly. But you seem to actively care about wanting to be in this match. You and Ms. Howlett have an idea in mind, I just hope it doesn’t interfere with the match.”
Viv rubs the back of her neck embarrassed.
“It’s not like I’m not thrilled to be on your Team Ryan. I am just worried about when the penny drops and what that will spell for the rest of us. I hope the whole measuring contest you and our new boss are doing doesn’t negatively affect the rest of us. I think you are a fantastic athlete. It will be amazing to watch you in action.”
Viv pauses before smiling brightly at the camera again.
“Devlin! This is going to be so cool being in a match with you!”
She bounces slightly on the bed.
“You made it through that hell of a match to make it here. I am so excited to have someone I know on this team. I hope you kick butt and get that pin. I owe you so much and even though we can’t wrestle the same people, but this is going to be awesome, right?”
Viv grins.
“It’s going to be awesome Devlin. Thank you for everything you’ve done to help with the moral. You’re the best.”
Viv takes a beat.
“Shea. Hi. I know we’ve never talked or even faced each other before. You seem to be as against The Pack as me and Devlin. Though, you have more of a reason then I do. Rowan has been making you a target for a while now. I’d have to be super naive not to know despite Maxine getting your title off you which one of the wolves you are aiming for.”
Viv glances down.
“You want her. You were the first one to pin Rowan. You’ve held the Shield Maiden belt. You have miles of experience ahead of me. I hope that doesn’t mean you aren’t willing to take a helping hand in case you need it. I want to help. I get Rowan is your number one target going into this and I am not going to try to convince you to be more open about it. Just letting you know I’m here if you need it.”
Vivienne wished she had listened to Ciara. Ciara had warned her not to get involved. Not to make herself a target. She’d left Ciara open. She should have found an excuse to send Ciara somewhere safe. Maybe to visit her own parents back in Ireland? Could The Pack have reached her there? How would Viv ever be able to forgive herself for this?
“You’re making that face again.”
“Sorry.” Viv leaned back in the front seat of the car looking out the window. “I just… You saw the package they released about holding Cross, right?”
“Don’t go there.”
“How can I not? I thought they’d go for my parents. I thought, you know, have to be my parents, right? My grandpa might be old, but he is always with my dad. Chester barely talks to me so it’d have to be my parents. I don’t have a romantic interest to kidnap like Helena did so…” Viv closed her eyes to keep from tearing up. “If they hurt her I am going to—”
“Hey.” Devlin said firmly. “Don’t let them win.”
“I thought being a depressed crying wreck let them win?”
Devlin smiled. “I know. It’s not fair.”
“It isn’t.”
“You’re a cinnamon roll too good and pure for this world. If you let them drag you to their level they win. Imagine the look on Rowan’s face when she gets to trumpet how she ruined the adorable Vivienne Rodgers to drowning people in their own blood.”
“…So I’m Harvey Dent in this scenario? Lame.”
“I don’t make the rules.” Devlin said as he parked the car. “Ready?”
She nodded. Viv followed Devlin out of the car as he went into the trunk. He reached under some bags and pulled out a bat, testing it before closing the trunk.
“Uh…” Viv frowned slightly. “What happened to Harvey analogy?”
“I’m not Harvey.” Devlin smirked. “I’m Frank Castle.”
Viv blinked as Dev walked towards the abandoned warehouse. She jogged to catch up as they walked in.
“Daddy needed to express some rage?” Viv asked looking around the area to see if anymore of the people would be there.
Devlin chuckled. “Okay, that’s a surprise.”
“What? I can see R rated movies.” Viv smiled. “At least it’s not an abandoned amusement park? Or toy factor? Would that be too silly?”
“First, Focus. Second, don’t give them ideas.” Devlin motioned towards the back.
“you think they left someone behind?” Viv asked following him.
“No. But better to be prepared.” He held the bat against his shoulder.
“Were you a boy scout?”
“Were you a girl scout?”
“Yeah, actually. Made it to Ambassador.” Viv grinned.
“Why am I not surprised?” He shook his head. “Got any problem with stairs?”
“Nope.” Viv stretched slightly.
The two made it up the stairs at a decent pace. She tried to focus on her steps, the feeling of the slight burn from not fully prepping before going up all the steps. Not wondering what kind of damage may have been left for her. She kept all her worst case senior fears somewhere else.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind killer.
The two stopped outside the roof access door. Viv took a deep breath.
“Ready?” Devlin asked.
“Yeah.”
Viv pushed open the door and made her way slowly. She looked around the roof. The image seemed to imply she wasn’t far. She walked past the debris until she saw the back of Ciara’s head. Without a second thought she bolted to Ciara, heart pounding. She didn’t take time to care about anything else as she started to get her best friend free.
Ciara stirred slightly.
“It’s okay. It’s me. You’re safe. I’ve got you. You’re safe. I am so sorry.” Viv babbled.
“Just get her untied.” Dev said behind her. “It’ll be easier to reassure her from the car.”
“Which brings me to the other team.”
Viv takes a moment to take a deep breath.
“I know I can’t touch the male side but let’s review who is over there anyways, right?”
Viv smiles.
“Dean’s a fanatic little edge lord whose whole life seems to be making Rowan happy. Not someone I want to see in a dark alley, but I don’t doubt one of the guys on our team can shut him up. He’s some dog chasing cars and if I had to pick, he’s who I would want removed first. I’m not saying the moment things get tough for Maxine or Rowan they might tag him in to switch everyone out, but I also wouldn’t put it past them.”
Viv shrugs.
“Jayson Mathews. Hi.”
Viv waves.
“You seem like a nice enough guy. You have been holding the Invictus belt and are so close to breaking the record. But you have to admit with the guys on this side of the line it has to be kind of scary. With your team mates being who they are that has to be a little unnerving too. But you seem nice. It’s too bad you have to retain past this event to do that. Seeing the guys on my side I honestly have to admit it doesn’t look good for you. Maybe if you manage to prove me wrong and keep that belt past this event I’ll owe you a banana split…. Or do you only do organic fruit?”
Viv taps her chin in thought.
“Andrew Jacobsen. Wow. Hi. You’ve been holding on to that title for a while, huh? You’ve been sort of undefeated. Sure, you’ve faced some of the guys on my side before but I’m pretty sure they are hungrier than ever to try to come out on top. It’s weird as a Wisconsin girl to see a Minnesota athlete making it to the top of a sport on such a long streak without losing hard. Your state working on naming a street after you yet?”
Viv sticks her tongue out playfully.
“Can’t let that tested and true state rivalry pass with out a comment. Seriously though hope you’re eating your Wheaties because I’m pretty sure one of the guys on my side is going to put you down pretty hard.”
Viv waits a long moment looking down at the candle.
“I remember once asking my grandpa about demons because my first sleepover had the Exorcist as the movie before bedtime. It had been the first time the concept of demons had really been presented to me and the idea unnerved me. He talked about how the spiritual world and the material world were interwoven and actions in one could affect the other. He said though there were mentions of evil spirits, but most people believed it was more metaphorical than something real.”
Vivienne looks at the camera for a moment.
“Rowan, I don’t think your metaphorical. I don’t find the concept of you existing to shake my faith to any certain core. There are bad things in the world and you just happen to be one of them. I might have the privilege of not having a history of personal tragedy I understand bad things happen. I get that they come regardless of whether we deserved them or not.”
Viv takes a deep breath.
“Other people have tried to doubt what you are. Fiona tried to reason with who you were before. I try to see the good in people, but I don’t think there is any good in you. Maybe there is some kindness to those who serve you, but you are not a good person. You’re a monster. You only care about pain and destroying those who oppose you. You are incapable of being anything then what you are.”
Viv leaned forward.
“You might have convinced those around you that you care about them. I have to believe that’s part of your appeal. But you only care about power. You only care about pain. You’re a demon. You only know how to lie and hurt. There is nothing redeeming about you in the slightest. You destroy people. People as a whole, we must do better than the beasts. There are rights. There are wrongs. They were not killers, but you made them that. You made them fractures of the human soul. That makes them into monsters. Humans are civilized. Merciful. Good. And you rip that away. You pray on the weak and the broken and you sew them up rotten.”
Viv shakes her head.
“Which brings me to Maxine. I assume there must be some kind of side perk to joining her ranks. Do you get dental? I know they said your spine was broken but there must be something you get out of signing on with her, right? Something beyond the spine repair work?”
Viv tilts her head slightly.
“I try not to mention the family stuff. My grandfather and my father taught me the business. They didn’t make it to the big time, but they taught me about respect. About what getting a title means. Maxine, you treat that title like it means nothing to you. Maybe it doesn’t. Maybe holding that status symbol is nothing more than to taunt your prey with the things they don’t have. But that’s why you don’t deserve it. That title means something to this company and you treat it like garbage.”
Viv crosses her arms.
“But beyond that this is our third time being in a match together. I know who you have as your main ‘hunt’ and it isn’t me. Guess I’m the appetizer until Astrid gets a rematch. But that’s fine. I had been preparing myself to face you for a while. I expected you to come for me sideways. Nightmares, threats against my parents or breaking into my room. I didn’t expect you’d go for her.”
Viv closes her eyes.
“Ciara is my best friend, my manager and the person who keeps me focused. It was an example of me underestimating your resolve to your cause. But taking her, hurting her wasn’t going to deter me from this course, Maxine.”
Viv looks back at the camera, eyes a little wet but determination shining in her eyes.
“If anything, it strengthens my resolve. I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take your bullying tactics lying down. You wanted me to feel torn up about it? I am. You want me to feel guilty? I do. You want me to feel unsafe? Fine. But I am not backing down. You. Don’t. Scare. Me.”
Viv points to her face.
“I am more determined to stop The Pack than I was before. The longer you hold power the more you are going to hurt people and those close to them. I am going to put a stop to it. I am going to put a stop to you. I am going to do everything in my power to pull of something spectacular by taking that belt away from you.”
Viv crosses her arms.
“You all think having strength is to be use it to hurt those weaker than you. Truth is, strength is meant to be used to protect people by taking out monsters. And that is what I am going to do at Survival of the Fittest. I am going to beat you to keep you from hurting anyone else.”
“Hi Imperial Wrestling Federation. How have you been?”
She tucks a loose piece of hair behind her ear.
