Price of Freedom
Stephen Kingsley is seen sitting at his desk. He has a piece of paper sitting in front of him on the desk. This piece of paper has many pages to it. He turns it over so that the cameraman cannot see what it was. Stephen leans back in his chair. For once Stephen had on a red polo shirt on.
Stephen: I remember the first time I met you Cyrus. You assisted me in a fight. You gave me enough of a breathing room where I could get back to my feet and finished the fight. You even nailed me with a fist to the jaw. Cyrus, this must be your way of collaboration, or a friendship, or maybe a bond. You got me under your wings and maybe you had no aspiration to do that but it was thrust upon you. Every time I told a story you would leave and never listened to the ending.
An alliance was formed
You had my back and I had your back and we were associates. You taught me about penitentiary life. What to look for and what not to do. Even after we were freed from prison, we went from being associates to becoming partners. You took the partnership in the United States where we entered the New Championship Wrestling Company. We always looked out for each other. You were staying in what I would call a shack. It reminded me of a prison cell.
Like a good partner
I never insisted on you staying to listen to the whole story. I helped you get out of that shack and get you out in the real world. I even tolerated you to start seeing my baby sister, Nicole. I could have sent her back to Australia, but against my better judgment I allowed her to stay with me. I even approved for you to stay in her room for a while. Cyrus, you made the decision of coming to IWF and you talked me into coming over and having Criminal Intent to go for the tag team championship, and I followed. I never hit you but I can tell you this I always had just cause to smack you a good one, but I took one for the partnership. Believe me Cyrus, I was never afraid of you, I respected you for what you had done for me.
Dissolving a partnership
I knew eventually the time will come but I was hoping not this quickly. At Legacy that time is getting nearer and closer. A story will be told at Legacy. The story will be about a war that takes place in the ring. The weapons that will be used is a chain, the ring itself, the knowledge that each wrestler has about his partner and whatever else that can be used. At Legacy, Cyrus you will not be able to run away from the story. In fact Cyrus you try to run away and I will insist on you sticking around. You wanted this match for us to be strapped to a chain and I had no problem with it, because now you have no place to go. Like in prison you could always move back to our cell or if we were in the cell you could always retreat somewhere else.
Stephen has a smirk on his face.
Cyrus you have always retreated from me. You would retreat to your hole in the ground shack when things went wrong. People think that I am the weakest point of Criminal Intent; well they don’t see the whole picture. Take for instance the IWF tag team championship prison match. You allowed yourself to be thrown out, in other words you retreated. You could not handle the punishment any longer and you did what came natural to you, RETREAT. Oh sure you put on a good act and did some screaming and trying to get back into the match, but it was all an ACT. There are two things that you are best at Cyrus.
Acting
Retreating
Price of Freedom
Most people do not know what it feels like by having their freedom taking away from them. The inmates in the county jail system, the inmates in the prison system, and the ex-cons can tell you what it feels like. Here in IWF I know one other mate beside me that knows that feeling.
Stephen turns over the piece of paper and it was his release papers from the prison.
This piece of paper means a lot to me. It means that I have my freedom restore to me. But you have to think what this piece of paper cost me. Can you put a price on your freedom? My freedom means more than anything else, but I protected my brother from going to prison. So is family more than freedom? So let’s look at the chain match at Legacy, what is the Price of Freedom? The two partners will be dissolving Criminal Intent. Cyrus wants his freedom from Criminal Intent. So has he thought about the cost of this freedom? Dissolving a partnership, no matter what kind of partnership it is, can be expensive. Getting a divorce can be expensive. Partnership in a business and the person who wants to dissolve it can be expensive. What I have talked about takes money, but at Legacy, money is not the issue. Money will not dissolve this partnership. If it’s not money, then what can dissolve this partnership?
Agonizing pain and suffering
Two wrestlers being strapped by a chain only mean one thing. Pain and suffering is going to happen in this match. All the money in the world will not matter in this match. Just visualize what a chain can do in the flesh. Cyrus you have had your head filled with shit. You have listened to the people in the back saying that you have carried me all this time. That you will be better off wrestling in single matches. Your head got so big that it almost exploded because you beat Spike Kane. So who is the weakest link now? You are the one that got caught up in people’s game. You are the one that fell into their trap. Instead of asking for my help, instead of reaching your hand out so that I could grab it and help you to safety, you decided to do it on your own. You decided to decline my help. You decided on an act of violence against me. You decided to have Nicole turn on her brother. All you had to do is talk with me about dissolving the team. I could have reached a decision with it, but once again you decided to RETREAT. Well Cyrus there is no retreating at Legacy. I hope you enjoy seeing your own blood? I know you have seen your blood before, but this time the injury will be perpetrated by someone you know. Cyrus to you I mean NOTHING anymore. When I am done with you, Nicole is not going to be able to identify you. What will Nicole think when your lifeless body is carried to her room?
Stephen has a smile as big as Texas as the scene fades out.
Stephen Kingsley is walking through Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. He had just gone through security checkpoints and is looking for a specific gate. He continues to walk looking at all the shops. He has on a red polo shirt and black slacks and of course his corked hat. He finds the gate that he is looking for and he looks at the plane that has just arrived.
Stephen: Why did I allow this to happen? I should have just said NO! But how can you say no…..
Before Stephen could finish his sentence we see the door open and we see Stephen’s dad and mom walking out. They spotted their oldest son and walked over to him. Mom hugs Stephen and then dad shakes hands with him.
Stephen: How was the flight?
Mom: Long! Where is Nicole?
Mom did not waste any time at all. She was the business type of the family. She kept the books on the family business and she accounted for everything, down to the last cent.
Stephen: I tried calling her. I have left messages upon messages and she does not return my call.
Mom: How did you allow this to happen? You were supposed to watch out for your sister. You know none of this would have happened if you would have come back and help with the family business; instead you had to come to the United States. You sent letters home and you called and that got Nicole fascinated in coming to the United States. She did not even discuss it with me. All I knew is one day she was here and the next she was gone.
Stephen: Now that is the Nicole that I knew.
Mom: She never did that when she was younger.
Stephen: Mom, she would sneak out at night and she made me promise that I would not tell you. I mean all teenagers does it? It’s not like it’s a crime.
Mom: See what that lead to! You allowed her to go behind our back and now it is coming back and biting you in the ass.
Dad decided to say some words; well actually he was rescuing me from mom’s wrath.
Dad: Did you get us some tickets to the PPV?
Stephen: Yes sir, Front row seating.
Dad: GREAT! You know this is good for business. Everyone is taking bets on which one is going to win. My business has grown. We are three times as busy as normal.
Dad enjoys running the business. At one point there were talks that he would retire and I would take over the family business. I knew that if dad was to retire that it might take him to his grave sooner than normal. Dad is a work alcohol and that is where I got my work ethic from.
Dad: How did you think we could manage to pay for this trip?
Stephen: Figures! Dad sees the dollar signs in all of this.
Dad: How did you think we could afford the house we live in? Did you think money grows on a tree when I bought you all of that equipment to go hunting for crocs? The only thing you used was that knife and your strength. Talk about being tenacious, but I am still proud of you. You know you can come back and help administrate the family business.
Stephen: I know dad that is an option that I have kept open.
They started walking towards the baggage claim area. Dad was looking at all the good looking Sheila’s passing by. At one point I thought dad got whiplash by the way he turned his head so quickly as he catch a glimpse of this Sheila going passed him.
Mom: Why don’t you close your mouth and put your eyes back in your socket.
We arrived at the baggage claim area and I pulled out my cell phone to see if I missed any calls or text from Nicole and there were no calls and no text from Nicole. The baggage started to roll out and mom pointed to 2 large suitcases and 1 little suitcase. I grab for the 2 big suitcases and struggle getting them off and dad picks up the little suitcase.
Stephen: What the hell did you pack mom? You are only staying for a couple of days.
Mom: Don’t use that kind of language towards me. You may be taller than I am, but I can take a baseball bat and knock you down.
So now you know why I was deliberating why I allowed this to happen.
Mom: Stephen, I want you to invite your sister over for dinner tonight. Tell her we need to have a family talk.
Stephen: She has not returned any of my phone calls. Now how do you expect me to get her to come over for a family talk?
Mom: Well you are the one that started this whole mess, so you better come up with a solution quickly.
Stephen: How can this be my fault? Nicole is old enough that she knows what she is doing. I hate what Cyrus has turned her into. I hate that she has turned her back on me. I can stand Cyrus walking away from me. I can take his punishment. What pisses me off the most is what he has done to my family. If you think this match is going to bring the family back together. Do you think that we can call a family meeting and everything is going to be ok? . You might as well go back home today. Nicole might have animosity towards me for the rest of her life after what I am going to do with Cyrus. She is so blinded by love right now that she is not going to understand that I am trying to help her get over Cyrus.
Mom had to go to the ladies room so Stephen points in the direction of the Bathroom and mom walks towards them.
Dad: Son, I know that you will do the right thing. I know that you will handle this to the best of your abilities and whatever the outcome of this match, at least you tried your best. Nicole is going to have to make her decision.
Dad pauses for a short time before he begins to speak.
Dad: Son we would love for you to come back. Customers miss you at the bar and grill and most of them felt safe with you around. Bruce just doesn’t have what it takes to make our customers feel safe and maybe Nicole will get the message and eventually come back and the family will be whole again. She did follow you here in the United States and maybe…..
Stephen cuts his dad off in mid-sentence.
Stephen: That is wishful thinking dad. If I was to decide to come back, Nicole would follow. Dad you are smarter than that. Nicole is pissed off at me because I never told her what happened between Bruce and me. Nicole, I know you probably will not believe me, but I would do the same if it had involved you.
Dad: Would you consider coming back and run Kingsley’s Bar and Grill?
Stephen: I have always left that option open Dad. Just don’t fool yourself by thinking that if I did come back and I did say if that Nicole will be back.
Mom is seen walking back towards them and they head for the door. Mom walks out followed by Dad and Stephen steps outside and stops. He looks around and noticed that it is a beautiful day, but can he enjoy it? He continues to walk as the scene fades out.
