As Nighthawk tapes up his wrists and hands in the bowels of the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, his ice-blue eyes cool as an iceberg, we see a newfound determination in his eyes. Clad in a baby-blue Tilden Highschool t-shirt, black leather pants, and black work boots, the “Wrestling Machine” takes a moment and slips back into his chair.
Nighthawk: “Four years. Doesn’t seem like a lot until you say it. But for four years, give or take a few contractual disagreements and a knee injury, I’ve been in the IWF. And I have absolutely nothing to show for it. No great glory. No big victory.
I’ve had my fingertips on titles, sure, but never could grab one. I took Alex Jones to the limit in my only shot at the Imperial title, but never won it. I challenged Warren Kane when he was the Invictus champion twice, but never won it. I tapped out to Jake Conway when he was the Man of Steel champion. In every way, if you were being the kindest you could be to me, my IWF career has been a disappointment.
This isn’t who I was before I got here. I came to the IWF and was treated as an ace-in-waiting. A guy who needed to be thought of as the Best in the World, because everywhere else I had ever been, I was.
But here? Nothing but heartbreak and disappointment.
But not at the Roulette. This year, this Roulette, is wide open. There is no odds-on favorite, no #1 seed to gum up the works. Everyone has a chance to win. Everyone has a chance to do what I want to do, what I know I can do.
But that’s not it. That’s not enough. I have a chance to do what no one thinks I can do.
Because I got under Spike Kane’s skin I convinced him to put his Invictus title on the line in the Roulette, and I ended up drawing the 1st entry.
So when the Roulette is over, two things will happen. I will have gone wire-to-wire to win the Roulette, and I will be the new Invictus champion. And when that show is over, whoever the World Champion is should know one thing: I’ll be coming to see you, and there will be no more disappointments.
Goodnight IWF. May sleep give you the courage to go on.”
