CHAPTER 2
“In Which Fiona is Introduced to the Subconscious Oompa-Loompa...”
11 April 2018 + 1300 GMT
We find Fiona McFly back at the house on Wolf Creek drive, packing the last of her items in her large black briefcase for her upcoming weekend visit to the Cincinnati area, home to the world-famous Kings Island amusement park. She still found herself being alone in a house filled with ghosts and memories, butshe tried to make due with what she had. She had spent her birthday at Six Flags last weekend, and in spite of the miserable weather of the day, she found herself enjoying the thrills associated with taking on attractions like Mr. Freeze Reverse Blast.
But each day is a new one.
And she was taking the process of coping with Jack's death one step at a time.
Exhausted from all the packing, she lied down in her bed, stretching her arms as Hall and Oates' "Private Eyes" softly played from her docked Android tablet, but as she turned her head slightly to the right whilst sinking into her pillow for a nice nap, her eyes became transfixed upon a face that didn't belong. It had an odd orange skin and green hair...
...not to mention a wide, shit-eating grin.
“Red alert…”
Spooked, Fiona shot out of bed and grabbed the one thing she could find for personal self-defence, a nine-iron. Swinging wildly, she found herself smashing the lamp on her nightstand but not the unwanted guest--for the "stranger" was, in the strictest sense, all in Fiona's mind.
FIONA MCFLY:
Who the fuck are you!?! I don’t WANT you me head much less in me home!
The spectre "sat" down at the desk, gazing its eyes upon Fiona's wedding picture with Jack.
“Temper, temper mon ami. I am...what many people would call, a ‘life force.’ I am the entity they seek to explore for guidance, comfort, or many other things. I am the figment of your imagination…”
Fiona sighed as she plunked herself back on the bed.
“...I am YOUR life force, the happiness and joy from your soul, the part that was stolen from you when your husband passed away. No one can see me or hear me...except you.”
She sat perplexed, her eyes wide as saucers. It wasn't every day that someone as docile or stoic as Fioona was would actually be talking to herself, much less a part of her own living subconsciousness.
FIONA:
Why do you have an orange face...and green hair?
“You have manifested me in the guise of an Oompa-Loompa. Surely you’ve heard that name before from somewhere.”
Fiona chuckled slightly, knowing the reference to her favourite childhood book and film...
FIONA:
Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Your face was primarily featured on--
--only to find herself cut off mid-sentence by her own thoughts.
“I KNOW what movie it is, ya silly gander. You can’t be such a know-it-all when it comes to simply enjoying the life around you.”
Fiona shook her head, realising that this Oompa-Loompa lookalike was the very thing that convinced her to try out some of Six Flags' most thrilling attractions despite being "alone" in the physical realm. It embarrassed her to know that she had been talking to herself all this time in front of the general public.
FIONA:
So…it was you that wanted me to enjoy riding the Mr. Freeze ride, and now...you want me to explore Kings Island.
The "visitor" nodded with a slight grin on its mug.
“Along with your corporeal friend James, yep, but you're doing all the hard work by yourself. I'm only 'helping.' You’ve had a heckuva life unto itself, Fi. You’ve had nothin’ good come your way yet you want to enrich other people’s lives in some capacity. Truth is...I understand what Jack meant to you and that his passing has left you with nothing but an empty hole that NEEDS to be filled. Let’s be reals, ya gotta learn to let him go in peace and explore the thing that made you tick more than anything else. That, huggy-bear...is your life force, your own living core. Without it, you won't get very far. As long as you remember your life force, you will NEVER be 'alone' in the world.”
Fiona stood, picking up her wedding picture from the desk and looking at their complexions.
FIONA:
It’s not going to be that simple...this house belonged to Jack and his family, they wrote the book on it.
“Now it’s YOUR house, YOUR safe haven, and there’s still tons of cleanin’ to do. Judging by the amount of stuff still in boxes, I'd say you've got a loooong way to go before your own life is pieced together again, cuddle-bun! I'll be watching...”
The spectre faded off into nothingness, leaving Fiona behind to survey the damage she caused by accident or design. She knew that one thing was certain: letting go wasn't going to be the easiest thing in the world to do.
”Oompa-loompa doo-ba-dee-doo
I’ve got another puzzle for you
Oompa-loompa doo-ba-da-dee
If you are wise you’ll listen to me
Why is your temper always this BAD
Smashing your shit is never very RAD
Thinking of the past will keep making you MAD
Fighting yourself, you won’t gain wealth
It will ruin your good health!
Oompa-loompa doo-ba-dee-doo
If you’re not angry you will go far
You will live in happiness too
Like the Oompa-Loompa doo-ba-dee-doo!”
