JAMES’ PERSONAL LOG: Entry #16

“Almost Human”
”So my fever broke after what seemed like an eternity, and now I’m feelin’ a bit better than how I was the other day.
And it couldn’t have come at a more sweeter time.
Seein’ Yulia again...brought a smile to my face. Yet instead of the usual long, pleasant chatter we used to engage in, she went into the office, lied down on my meditation couch, and slept at first. She slumbered and slumbered...as if she hadn’t slumbered in years, but deep down in my heart, I figured she just had a long drive from wherever she was and just needed a break.
It was good havin’ her back home after all this time.
When she was feelin’ a l’il more up to it, she told me about her own trials and travels in the wrestlin’ gig, about how she felt she wasn’t suited to put on a pair of boots. As it turned out, she’s now workin’ at a barbershop near La Palmera as a stylist! Perhaps someday, I might take up on her offer and come in for a trim--’cuz I sure as hell could use one right about now.
Physically, I was feelin’ great as we stepped out onto the beach to watch the sunset, a part of a routine that would never be broken regardless of circumstances.
Mentally, I wasn’t feelin’ all that great--and I had an inklin' that she'd want to know what was in my head.
I felt like I was ‘almost human’...“
“Ain’t this a nice sunset?,” James Gilmore, with a slight smile on his face, pondered as he watched the sun dip into the horizon with his girlfriend Yulia Malakova. The pair couldn't have picked a more pleasant evening to be outdoors than on this Thursday. They were blessed with mainly clear skies and warm temperatures with a gentle breeze blowing in from off the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. “It’s like a fire in the sky that’s burnin’ itself out.”
Yulia smiled warmly, watching as James closed his eyes and reflected upon the last time he felt this content about a sunset before--during one of the more 'happier' periods of his life back in 2016.
“Remember that voyage we took? This reminds me of that time, when we was in Montego Bay or Labadee.”
“I remember having to get you out of that bar when our engineer friend started that fight!,” the Checnan native spoke in her distinctive accent, leading Gilmore to chuckle to himself about his side adventures with one Patrick Scott.
“Ahh those were good days,” James said with a sly grin. Yet he found himself wondering whether or not he'd find the courage to invite her on some faraway trip, given the downward spiral his life had become in 2017. Deep down in his soul, the Islander alum knew that without Yulia as a guardian angel of sorts, his life probably would have ended much sooner. “Ya know what we need to do babe? You and I...need to go on another cruise. Just the two of us…,” he intoned, then took a deep breath.
Yulia grinned from ear to ear before reaching into her handbag and pulling out an envelope.
“I already had one planned for us,” she said with a slight giggle, handing the piece of mail to James who gawked at it for a second or two before opening it to reveal its contents. “From my heart...to yours.”
James' left eye widened in shock and disbelief as he took a gander at a brochure featuring stock photos of selected cast members of the Star Trek franchise--from The Original Series all the way to Enterprise. He was a diehard Trekkie through and through, and he knew from the get-go that this was no ordinary gift. It was a labor of love that told Gilmore that, in spite of everything that he went through in recent times, Malakova hadn't forgotten about him.
“Wow...mid-June, a ten-day Star Trek-themed cruise on the Harmony of the Seas, where I can meet my idols! George Takei, Levar Burton, Jeri Ryan, Nana Visitor, Terry Farrell, Scott Bakula...unreal! I'm at a loss for words...can't believe you did this!,” he exclaimed with tears of joy streaming down his face.
“I figured you would love it.”
“Love it?! Darlin’ I ADORE it--this is gonna be better than the time I saw Bob Barker in person! It’s the best gift a guy can ever have.”
They shared a warm, loving embrace as the breezes continued, the waves crashing against the white sand. In James' mind, even though Yulia had never let go of him, his own life changed when she left to pursue her own dreams and aspirations. “I didn’t think I’d ever see you again,” he lamented. “I...ya know, I’ve been through a lot since ya started tryin' out for wrestlin' and all that jazz.”
“I knew I would find you someday,” Yulia responded warmly. “I was thinking about you while I was traveling, wondering where you were and how you were feeling...”
Yulia's voice trailed off as she noticed that something wasn't quite right with James. His joyful, wonderous demeanor over having the chance to meet his favorite Star Trek co-stars had been replaced by a look of trepidation and sadness--as if something had hit him like a bag full of bricks.
“You look like you are being very hard on yourself.”
Gilmore nodded solemnly, for she was right. He felt the need to explain what he'd been through during the course of last year...
“Ya don’t know…”
...yet something was missing, as if his personal puzzle had one final piece left before it was completed.
“Ya just don’t know…”
At was at this moment in time when Yulia began to realize that something had been bothering the one she loved for a very long time. She had known, from her father, about his association with Lindsey Grawn, but she felt something in his consciousness that didn't belong. It was sinister, ungodly...it felt as if Satan himself had poisoned the very core of the ex-Islander's being and wasn't ready to go down without a fight.
"Johnny-JJ...what happened?"
James began to tremble, his soul resisting the force of evil from within as it harkened back to when his life went south--and it wasn't the day of his shooting accident in October.
No...this was much earlier than that awful evening in question.
He had no choice but to finally open up and let the proverbial cat out of the bag.
