Prologue
The sound of a mysterious female voice can be heard over a slow rumble of thunder.
“Tell me what you’re really feeling…
Bolts of lightning flash in the clouds above as we see an uncoloured static image of Fiona McFly kneeling next to what appears to be a grave marker underneath a large oak tree.
FIONA MCFLY:
(voice)
I feel many things, many auras fighting me…
On-screen, we see a slow-motion image of Fiona jogging through what appears to be an empty field underneath a sunless sky, to Freddie Mercury’s powerful voice as the music legend performs a vocals-only mix of “The Show Must Go On.”
”Empty spaces.
What are we living for?
Abandoned places.
I guess we know the score.
On and on.
Does anybody know what we are looking for?”
The image slowly turns to colour as we now see Fiona looking out towards the sunrise on Tokyo’s Rainbow Bridge with a group of children, conducting an impromptu autograph session...
FIONA:
(voice)
Warmth, love, strength...and gentleness…
...before slowly transitioning to another shot, this time featuring her standing on the summit of what appears to be Piz Gloria in Switzerland, clad in heavy winter’s attire...
”Another hero,
Another mindless crime
Behind the curtain
In the pantomime.
Hold the line.
Does anybody want to take it anymore?...”
...with a close-up shot showing tears streaming down the cheeks of a partially-covered visage. That slowly dissolves into another grainy video, this one showing a casket being carried down an aisle and towards the front of a church sanctuary, with a formally-clad Fiona leading a group of pallbearers in black suits.
FIONA:
(voice)
Cold, hatred, weakness...and bitterness…
We then see an image of Fiona looking out at a sea of people inside Maverick Stadium, giving a speech during a benefit event that paid tribute to her late husband, Jack Gaither...
“Show must go on
Show must go on - yeah.
Inside my heart is breaking.
My make-up may be flaking.
But my smile still stays on…”
...as an orchestra and choir arrangement picks up a musical background that matches Freddie’s vocals. We then see a video showing Fiona hugging and high-fiving some children on her way to the ring, with a smile on her face as the mysterious voice speaks.
”You regained your love of the game…”
Images of Fiona’s wrestling highlights are projected onto a static image...
”You had your mind corrupted by a presence from your future…”
...to which, when exposed, shows the cackling visage of her future self, the old woman code-named “Debbie Fisher.” We hear shrieks of laughter as the shot cuts to black, the orchestral arrangement stopping as if on a cue.
”Now, you have to choose between the light and the dar…”
A foggy image appears on-screen, showing Fiona and her half-brother Luke inside what appears to be the cockpit of a small aircraft, and when it slowly fades to black...
FIONA:
Where the hell are we...?!
LUKE KIMBLE:
From a standpoint of logic, I believe you should be asking…when the hell are we?!
... a rapid-fire series of images and video begins to play, to the immortalised strains of the Beastie Boys and “Sabotage,” featuring scenes from many different events in the history of our planet Earth.
”I can't stand it I know you planned it
I'm gonna set it straight, this watergate
I can't stand rocking when I'm in here
Because your crystal ball ain't so crystal clear
So while you sit back and wonder why
I got this fuckin' thorn in my side
Oh my God, it's a mirage
I'm tellin' y'all it's sabotage…”
As images are shown through the perspective of an hourglass--from Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech and Neil Armstrong’s moon landing, to FDR’s “a day in infamy” war declaration speech and Allied troops battling German tank divisions in World War II, and to Leon Lett’s hot-dogging blooper in Super Bowl XXVII in 1993--we see Fiona running through an empty field in Northern Ireland alongside a young child...
LUKE:
(voice)
This is the past -- and your chance to learn from it. Remember these three ground rules of time travel -- one, don’t draw attention to yourself...
...before seeing a brief snapshot of her wearing a one-piece swimsuit, lying seductively on the sands of a beach in Southern California...
LUKE:
(voice)
Two, the clock in the present is always running…
...with the sands in the hourglass falling from top to bottom, projecting even more stock news clips of President Trump’s 2016 election victory and Queen’s Freddie Mercury grinding with a cameraman at Live Aid, 1985...
FIONA:
(voice)
And the third?!
...before everything cuts to black, accompanied by a loud clap of thunder.
LUKE:
(voice)
Do NOT interfere with any historical events or events that greatly affect your life!
As the opening bars to Puddle of Mudd’s “Blurry” begin playing, we see a still shot of Fiona looking up at a clear sky, watching a rainbow appear out of nowhere...
“But how far will you go to make your choice count…?!”
...before the mysterious woman appears to simply fade in from nothingness, and for the first time we get a close up of her face, which nearly looks identical to that of Fiona’s.
LUKE:
(voice)
It’s okay to say ‘I don’t know.’ It’s okay to not say anything at all. -- Your actions, your inactions, speak louder than words…
We then see Fiona, visibly shaken and haunted by everything she’s been through, standing in what appears to be an observation lounge on a massive starship, overlooking the planet Earth alongside the mysterious woman, clad in a distinctive red uniform...
“You could be my someone
You could be my scene
You know that I'll protect you
From all of the obscene
I wonder what you're doing
Imagine where you are
There's oceans in between us
But that's not very far"
...we then see a nightmarish, demonic image of what looks like Fiona losing her grip on some mountain rock in Yosemite National Park, along with the resulting fall...
“Can you take it all away?
Can you take it all away?
Well you shoved it in my face
This pain you gave to me
Can you take it all away?
Can you take it all away?
Well you shoved it in my face…”
...before cutting back as the woman turns to Fiona and offers a tender hug in solemn friendship. We hear another boom of thunder as, once more, everything fades to complete and total darkness.
LUKE
(voice)
You’re a part of something much bigger than you realise. Don’t let it slip away…
As “The Show Must Go On” kicks into high gear--with Queen’s instruments backing Freddie’s vocals--we see more highlights of Fiona’s wrestling career--from her triumph in the 2016 Iron Maiden to her being lit aflame--interspersed with the image of her running through a narrow corridor.
”Whatever happens,
I'll leave it all to chance.
Another heartache,
Another failed romance.
On and on.
Does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess I'm learning.
I must be warmer now.
I'll soon be turning
'Round the corner now.
Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark, I’m aching
To be free…”
Fiona is then shown in various emotional states, from the joys of meeting people from all walks to life to flat-out rage as she breaks a glass table with her bare hands, projected upon the image of her stoic, expressionless visage.
FIONA:
(voice)
Everything is tugging at me -- love, hate, anger, joy -- It’s giving me a sense of peace and purpose...
We then see her training furiously at a makeshift gym built in an old farmhouse...
“Show must go on.
Show must go on -- yeah, yeah!
Oooo -- Inside my heart is breaking.
My make-up may be flaking,
But my smile still stays on.”
...which immediately jump cuts to stock footage of crystal-clear blue ocean waters...
“If there’s anything I can teach you, it’s that life is an ocean filled with untapped, unimaginable potential…”
...to, as the mysterious woman speaks to her, the roar of cheering crowds...
“When you feel like you’re lost, can you find your way back home…?!”
...and finally, to the very first static photograph of Fiona kneeling at the grave marker, which reads upon close-up inspection “JOHN WAYNE MATHIAS GAITHER : Mar. 24, 1982-Dec. 26, 2017 : Loving Husband, Loyal Worker.” The sands from the hourglass rise to the top as we see Fiona making her in-ring debut in 2015...
“My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies.
Fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die.
I can fly, my friends.
Show must go on.
Show must go on.
I'll face it with a grin.
I'm never giving in—
On—with the show.”
...then more wrestling highlights appear on-screen, eventually losing their colour until they become nothing more than black-and-white video clips.
”I'll top the bill,
I'll overkill.
I have to find the will to carry on with the show.
On with the show.
Show must go on…”
The screen fades to black, and thunder rumbles once more as we see blood-red letters fading in, utilising a futuristic LCARS font, that reads:
SHE MUST WIN.
