”Natural Selection.”
A lioness stalks its prey from the tall grass. A lonely adolescent impala laps water from a river that cuts through the tundra like a line in the sand.
”Simply put, those organisms better adapted to their environment not only survive to reproduce but thrive in their environment.”
Slowly the lioness moves through the tall grass as the impale stands unsuspecting of its potential fate.
”The organisms who do not adapt, who refuse to adapt, who continue to live their lives as they have always lived them perish. They become prey to the more adapted, to the better predator. Eventually through natural selection the weak species are weeded out and rendered extinct.”
The impala catches a scent on the wind, it’s suspicious and prepares itself to run. The lioness crouches down to hide itself from view.
”There is no better example of this than human kind itself. Humans have constantly evolved to better adapt to their environment. From the deserts of Africa to the snow covered Alps. Human kind has spread itself far and wide, making it’s home anywhere it so chooses and in every location they have driven out the weaker species. Sometimes even driving out the weaker humans.”
The impala feels settled, the scent is gone, it returns to quenching it’s thirst as the lioness begins to move forward, getting close enough to kill.
”In the Americas it was the natives who found themselves under-prepared. Despite their desire to live, despite their ability to adapt to their surroundings they could not adapt to the threat posed by a greater predator. The white man murdered them, subjugated them and drove them from their lands. The white man was better adapted for war with weapons the natives had never even dreamed of.”
The lioness creeps forward, sulking down low to keep out of view, the impala is completely unaware of another presence.
”As the white man spread it eradicated so much more than the natives. Humans and animals alike found themselves victim to the white man. Eventually a country was founded on the belief of Manifest Destiny. Another form of Natural Selection. Since that day a constant war has been waged. Groups of humans all across this great world have battled for dominance. Each believing itself to be better adapted. Most almost always realizing they were wrong.”
The lioness is within feet of the impala now, she can taste it’s flesh on her tongue.
”Natural Selection is the one true law of the universe. The strong will survive. They will adapt. They will find a way to live. The weak will be purged, fed upon and forgotten. It is terrible, it is sickening but it is the only way.”
“The weak are a hindrance.”
“They drain resources. They distract leadership. They keep our species from evolving into the apex predator we were designed to be. There is no greater example of this than the impending Roulette. A match ruled by Natural Selection.”
The lioness moves into position, this is it, this was her kill and it would feed her whole family. The lioness crouches down low and prepares itself to pounce.
”One by one the weak will be removed, thrown over the top rope and eliminated. In the end only one will stand strong and survive the match able to call themselves the best among us. They will have adapted, they will have survived and they will move on to face the World Champion. This is the match we dream about.”
“The Roulette.”
“We were designed for this.”
“The opportunity to test ourselves against the entirety of the roster. We believes ourselves to be on top of the food chain. We proclaim ourselves as the apex predator. But there is only one way to truly know. Singles matches, triple threat matches, fatal four ways, none of those will give us the knowledge we crave. We want to know we are the King of this Jungle, the greatest hunter to ever be, the single most dominant force to ever step into the ring.”
“The Roulette will give us that truth.”
“Either we will thrive, we will feed and we will win or we will be cast aside by someone stronger, faster and better. Either way we get the answer we were looking for. We find out how we match up against the rest of the roster in a kill or be killed situation. We look forward to this.”
“Even if we lose we win.”
“We know there is no one on this roster with the strength that will do what is necessary. We know that even if we do not win, the winner will only be the apex in name only. A victory secures our position as the Apex Predator but a loss? A loss tells us who we need to target. Who needs to be eliminated. Who will be our next victim.”
The lioness makes her move. In the blink of an eye she has crossed the thirty feet between her and the impala but a misstep has clued her prey to the incoming attack. A single branch breaking beneath a paw. The impala moves only slightly but it is enough for the lioness to miss on her lunge and land in the water.
”We will fight with the hunger of a predator but we will hunt with an eye toward the future.”
The lioness readjusts itself in the water and prepares to lunge again when from the depths a crocodile emerges and clams its mighty jaws around the hind legs of the lioness. Before the lioness knows what to do it is pulled into a death roll and disappears beneath the depths of the river. The impala quickly scampers off, free to live another day.
”In the end Natural Selection isn’t about being the strongest or the fastest. It’s simply about being able to adapt to your surroundings. It is about being the best prepared for any and every situation. It is about knowing when to strike and when to wait. When to kill and when to walk away. Natural Selection is the law with which we live by and it is the law that will see us once again stand on top of the IWF as its once and future World Champion.”
Blood rises to surface of the water but is quickly swept away by the currents.
”We are Leviathan. We are the Strongest there Is.”
