Chapter V
“FIONA MEETS FIONA”
18 July 2019 + 1215 GMT
Fiona McFly felt really good to be back in the land of the familiar.
Yet on this hot day, she had one last mission to undertake.
The first part was easy enough, get a ride over to Lulu’s Cafe from Ridley Airfield after dropping her belongings off at the ranch house. The hard part, as it turned out, was locating a woman bearing a striking resemblance to her--save for her hair turning gray. Amidst the aromas of burgers and fries, along with a fine selection of music from Florence + The Machine, Fiona’s eyes wandered around the old burger joint as she looked for her target.
“And the crown—it weighs heavy
'Til it's banging on my eyelids
Retreating in covers and closing the curtains
One thing's for certain, oh
A year like this passes so strangely
Somewhere between sorrow and bliss
Oh, who decides from where up high?
I couldn't say, "I need more time."
Oh, grant that I can stay the night
Or one more day inside this life
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never enough
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never enough
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never enough
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never, never, never enough…”
And then, as Florence’s sultry voice faded in her mind...
FIONA MCFLY:
Mum…!?!
...she spotted her older self from the year 2044 (heretofore referred to as “Aged Fiona”) sitting alone in a corner booth, waiting for her to-go food to arrive. Aged Fiona looked up with the raise of her right brow, spotting her younger counterpart as she approached the table.
AGED FIONA:
I am not our Mum…
Fiona had done quite a few awkward things in her life, but nothing in her brain felt as more awkward than it did the moment she made eye contact with the woman who came from 25 years into the future, from right in the heart of the Second American Civil War.
AGED FIONA:
There are so few McFlys left in the world, we cannot possibly afford to ignore each other.
Fiona chuckled.
AGED FIONA:
But how did you know where to find me?!
FIONA:
‘Cos I figured...when your sad or lonely, this becomes your favourite place.
Aged Fiona nodded warmly as she drank from a cup of sweetened iced tea.
FIONA:
But trust me, I’d be better off with my friends then sitting here by myself, pondering the future as a widow when you have new challenges to face.
AGED FIONA:
(raises eyebrow)
So…
Aged Fiona paused for a moment, spotting her younger self’s “Mama Bear” tattoo before gazing at her own.
AGED FIONA:
...this entire time-travel experience has truly taught you a valuable lesson.
The prime Fiona took a deep breath and closed her eyes, thoughts racing into her mind...
”You know it, Fi. In spite of these fun and exciting adventures, what did they change?! A coffee shop changed to a hamburger eatery, you brought rock and roll to the Old American West! Your parents are still dead, and so is Jack…”
...and sighed solemnly. Whilst she did enjoy her time with her friends James Gilmore and Rob Diamond, the scornful Devil in her brain reminded her that nothing had been solved. Yet it was also a reminder that, perhaps, a newer journey could begin, one that saw to it that she would never be alone anymore.
FIONA:
(nods)
Aye...it has.
Fiona cleared her throat before looking down at her old-fashioned gold wristwatch, one of several items she had brought back from her time-travels into the past.
FIONA:
I have come to collect you. The others are at Ridley Airfield at this moment, awaiting your arrival.
As if on cue, Aged Fiona handed her a set of three keys.
AGED FIONA:
I believe these keys belong to you, but honestly I wish I could remain here, find a quiet spot, and stay out of history’s way…
She paused, remembering the moments she had whilst in the present day.
AGED FIONA:
...but I’d be living in the past, shying away from the storms that lie ahead. Before I leave, however...can you do me a favour?
FIONA:
I’ll do anything; it’s the least I can do to repay you for helping tend to the ranch whilst I was away.
Aged Fiona whispered into her younger self's ear, apparently realising that there was no real answer to the question of "George or Gracie."
AGED FIONA:
Tell JJ...the answer is whatever you choose to pick--George or Gracie. Whichever path you choose, make it a good one.
Fiona smiled as the two women grabbed a bag filled with burgers and fries before stepping outside, where their car awaited.
FIONA:
I will tell him that for you...
Yet as she set foot on the hot downtown sidewalk, the sound of a record scratching entered into Fiona’s consciousness when, from out of nowhere, she spotted a familiar-looking white two-door car with a distinctive crack on its windshield. Her eyes lit up over the fact that she had seen that car somewhere before...
“Remember how that piece of shit kept breaking down on you, you dumb cunt?! You bought and fixed up the Yugo in 1994! I’d say it’s karma for purchasing a piece of shit like that...”
...and then she placed her hands firmly on her hips, realising that she was stuck with an unwanted blast from the past, a car that was--indeed--a piece of shit.
FIONA:
Oh for fuck’s sake…
