“HONORED GUEST”
JAMES’ PERSONAL LOG
Supplemental, the morning after the poker game…
It was around seven in the mornin’.
My heart was racin’ after last night, after seein’ my old friend Mary Sue in the flesh for the first time in years. I felt like I was frozen in time, awash in nothin’ else except memories of days long since past. Her scarin’ the snot outta me to the point where I accidentally dropped an F-bomb in the cafeteria, playin’ tag, the laughs and squeals...she was the first true friend I ever had in my life.
Yet for a time...my only friend.
Everyone else was sleepin’ in this particular mornin’, but I had my iPhone at the ready. I dialed Mary Sue’s number from the card she gave me, and her awesomely-twangy Texas voice came onto the other end of the line. It was a voice made in heaven, a voice that reminded me of a much simpler time.
”Howdy!”
“Howdy Mary Sue, it’s JJ…”
I heard the sound of a Pepsi can openin’ up, followed by her squealish laugh.
”Well-well, I'll be...!! Thank you for callin’, hun! It’s been...ya know, years, since we last spoke…”
“It’s been too long, old friend…”
As I paused, I closed my eyes. I had thought of the idea Fiona posed last night, and Rob’s assessment that we talk about said idea while doin’ what we love the most--travelin’, makin’ fools of ourselves, ya know the drill.
“Gotta question for ya.”
’Lay it on me!”
“If your work schedule permits it, how would ya like to hop on a road trip with some new friends of mine. You’d be our honored guest…”
Just then, I heard the sound of her flippin’ through some papers. I kept takin’ deep breaths, knowin’ how disappointed I’d be if she couldn’t make it. But to my relief...
”Y’all know, you’re in luck! I’m off all of next week, and I don’t mind gettin’ away for awhile.”
“Good to hear, dudette.”
I pummped my fist and smiled.
“You’ll love hangin’ with Rob and Fiona--especially Fi.”
”What’s the plan?”
“Fi wants to take us campin’ on top of the Enchanted Rock. Fair warnin’, we’re gonna be talkin’ shop most of the time but you’ll get used to it. We're gonna be talkin' about the possibilty of openin' up a wrestlin' school.”
She giggled as I pulled out a can of Orange-Vanilla coke from the fridge.
“Oh, I don’t mind at all! And I assume y'all are wrestlers!?! That's pretty sweet--I know you'll be just as good of a teacher as Missus Wahib!”
“Well...nothin' will ever compare to Missus Wahib, but stilll. Looks like we've got ourselves a plan! We’re gonna be takin’ Fiona's Kia Niro since it’s a bigger vehicle than what we’ve got. Plus it’s a hybrid, so it saves gas money.”
”Sounds like a plan to me--I'm lookin' forward to the experience with y'all! See y’all next week!”
As I hung up, Yulia came out of the bedroom with this smirk on her face. She, too, was goin’ on a road trip to her native homeland, and I’d like to think that...just maybe, she approved our own l’il excursion as well. I was on the verge of burstin’, for it gave me great joy to know that we was gonna be in for one helluva fun time.
“Definitely…”
