I remember the first time I ever met him. It burns in my memory like an old scar. Everytime you look at it you can't help but feel the wound re-open...
I'd only just started at the Social Enemy Wrestling School, per the recommendation of my brother. He was running the ropes in the ring, training with a phantom partner. I jumped up on the apron and extended my hand, trying to be friendly, it's what my brother wanted.
"Hey, I'm Cable Ar-"
That was all I was able to get out before he cut me off. His head snapped in my direction as he glared at me rather carelessly.
"It doesn't matter what your name is."
It was a little hard to believe the audacity of this man, after all, he had no idea what my lineage was.
"Excuse me?"
I asked but he returned to his training, uttering almost under his breath in response, as if it were a personal mantra.
"You are merely an obstacle between my and my ultimate goal. Nothing more. Nothing less."
As I sit here today in the locker room across from that same man, across from my partner, Gjenrei, it's hard to believe how far we've come. Once we were nothing more than rivals, perhaps even enemies. Today we begin our journey together as HonorBound.
Extremely hard to believe.
"Almost a years worth of training together comes to a head tonight, you ready?"
He doesn't even look up from his seeming prayer to answer me.
"I am always ready."
It's hard not to grin at the response. It's typical. In all our time together I have never seen him do anything but train for this moment. The moment when we step into the ring together and live our dreams. Nearly a year ago we met for the first time and every single moment has been honing our craft.
No fun.
No games.
Just hard work.
It's what my brother told me was required to succeed in this business. When I first started out in professional wrestling I was cocky, arrogant. I thought because of my background I was better suited to survive, thrive even. I looked down my nose at people like Gjenrei and vowed to destroy them.
I was gravely mistaken.
It only took a hand full of ass whippings to wake me up to the reality that these men and women had been training their entire lives for the moment when they could step into the ring. I had wrongly perceived myself to be better and now it was time to learn. My brother, a demon with angel wings, took me under his wing and began to teach me everything he knew...
Which was mostly pain...
How to cause it...
How use it...
How to ignore it...
It was he who put Gjenrei and I together. He said our drive alone would be enough to overwhelm most teams. He said we needed to work together so we could survive alone. I'm not entirely sure what he meant by that. I'm not sure why he pushed so hard for us to form HonorBound, but I'm glad he did. In Gjenrei I have a kindred spirit, someone who wants exactly what I want...
To be the best...
Tonight we have our first match in IWF. Tonight we stand in the ring together for the first time as HonorBound and put to the test everything we have learned. Tonight is the first step toward whatever may come next.
"Cable..."
"Gjenrei..."
He looks up at me from his prayer. His eyes reflect an eerie calmness, a calmness I have only seen once in my entire life, moments before a hurricane...
"We leave it all in the ring tonight. We show them who we are and what it means to be Bound by Honor."
I feel the smirk on my face as I extend my hand toward this man whom I call my partner.
"No regrets. No mercy."
From behind me the locker room swings open.
"You boys are up."
And just like that it's time for us to make our world wide debut. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have butterflies as I walked out the locker room door, Gjenrei beside me. The two of us walked in stride as we headed toward the curtain, our destiny about to be fulfilled. Two men stood before us, one with a microphone, the other with a camera. He asked us if we had anything to say before our match, it just so happens we did.
"My name is Cable Arcane, some of you may know me, most of you do not. Regardless, tonight you will all come to know HonorBound."
I feel a sense of pride as the name rolls of my tonuge.[/u]
"Tonight you will either come to fear or respect us, perhaps both, because tonight Honorbound takes the world by storm. One team is well known, the other is like ourselves, completely new. However I have the same warning for both. Do not under estimate us. Do not over look us. Do not treat us as less than yourselves. It doesn't matter where you come from or what you did before you got here, tonight is a new beginning for us all. Tonight is but day one in year one of IWF and anything that came before now is meaningless. We are all on equal footing tonight. We are all the same, if only for one night. Tonight some will shine, others will fall and all you really need to know is HonorBound will stand over you all."
I know my warning will fall on arrogant, ignorant, deaf ears but to those who watch with respect, to those who appreciate the honor with which we fight with, our words will be heard.
"Spike Kane and Rob Diamond. Two legends who have done it all. However you begin as we do at the bottom of IWF, once more having to prove yourselves worthy of what I'm sure are hefty contracts. I will not stand here and act as if anything you've done is insignificant, I will merely remind you that it is the past. What you did somewhere else against someone else has no effect on this match, on this night, on us. Gjenrei and I do not live in the past or the future. We do not dream false dreams of what may be. We live in the here, the now, we live for today. And today we look to step in the ring with perhaps two of the most violent and evil men who have ever laced up a pair of boots. Today we look to defeat the monsters who stand opposed to us and show this world that there is nothing to fear but fear itself. That there is no honor in infamy."
A lesson they both failed to learn so long ago.
"Some would say the true wild card in this match is the James Gang. While InFamous is well known and the face of Gjenrei has been seen before, no one knows who you are or what to expect. That makes the two of you very dangerous. But I want you both to listen to me as I speak. I do not feel fear. Not for any man. So enter this match knowing that there is nothing you can say or do to me which will stop me from trying to win this match. I'm sure we have all been through hell to be standing here today, I'm sure not a single one of us had an easy road to this match, but I will say no one knows the hell I've been through. The man who trained, the wars he prepared me for, are unlike anything you two have ever even dreamed of in your worst nightmare. You may be a wild card, hell, you may even end up being one of the greatest tag teams who have ever lived, but tonight you are what stands in between us and destiny... Us and our purpose."
Something most men lack...
"There are no cliches tonight. No promises of blood shed. There is simply us, this match, and the respect we hope to earn by the end of tonight. Good luck. It will be my honor to show you No Mercy."
The camera shifts to Gjenrei who takes a deep breath before he speaks...
