Damien was crawling around the floor of his bedroom with Dean laying in the middle looking at his phone, staring at the video package he’d already watched 3 times since it had been released, like the obsessed ex-boyfriend...fiance...thing.
“Dddd!” Damien babbles happily handing Dean a white rabbit stuffed animal, a recent favorite likely due to the soft texture.
“Hey buddy, want me to hold your bunny?” Dean asks taking the bunny.
“GG!” Damien crawls away.
Dean knew he shouldn’t but he plays the video again.
It was easier when he could convince himself it was just a one time trick. A quick, pop of nostalgia before he faded back into the shadows again. It was easier when he didn’t see him. Easier when he could pretend he was over it. Easier when Dean could just pretend Warren was as dead as Maxine was. Mourn it and convince himself to move on.
It was so much harder when he was so obviously alive.
Warren sounds the same, but he looks a little different. Healthier, oddly happier… Dean would have preferred he looked miserable. Dean would have preferred him to look as miserable as Dean had been feeling.
It seemed to prove that everyone was right, maybe they had been bad for each other, maybe they were better off now... But Dean wasn't over him...not even a little. He'd tried to be. He'd tried pushing Warren away when they were together because he knew sooner or later Warren was going to leave. So it would hurt less. But it didn't. It hurt more.
“Dddd!” Damien hands Dean his teddy bear and a plastic snake.
“I don’t need all your toys.”
“Ddd!” Damien insists.
“Come here.” Dean put the phone down and picks his son up as the baby giggles. “Trying to cheer me up?”
“Ddd!” Damien looked so much like Maxine when he smiles in a light, Dean hugs him close.
“Thanks for trying, buddy.” Dean kissed the top of his head. "Should we try distracting me with baking a cake while you get some educational TV in?"
"Ggg!"
