The grainy film of a handheld camera, recording. A young Xavier Cross, on the other side, a backward fitted hat, white tank top. It’s 2006, he’s roughly 23, 24 years old. Frame smaller.
Xavier Cross: “Yo...Yo. My name is X and I’m here to say. Eff yo B, have a nice day. I’m here to win titles, you’re just here to play. GWC you don’t know me, but soon you’ll all be a victim to that one, two, three.”
Giving a middle finger, and an obnoxious laugh that seemed to be Jamie Kennedy-esc, he sets the camera down. Not turning it off. He takes a few steps back, looking up at an older man who now steps into the frame. This is Paul Henderson, or Paulie, trust me the Rocky reference isn’t lost on anyone.
Xavier Cross: “How was that? Should I do it again. I should do it again. That could be better.”
Paulie: “Look kid, you’re talented. You can move in a ring faster than most. The promo stuff, that’ll come. I don’t get this whole hip hop rap crap. But I do know it annoys me, so if you can annoying an entire arena of people, you’ll be perfect.”
Xavier looks confused, in that moment he thought it was all about leaving everyone with a smile. He didn’t quite understand the whole concept of Heels and Faces. He just wanted to go out, do multiple flips, jump off things, go hardcore, go extreme. Be a champion…
{The sound of Ozzy's Ordinary Man plays softly behind various scenes}
I was unprepared for fame
A headline flips over, of Xavier Cross arrested for DUI dated 2008.
Then everybody knew my name
Standing triumph he wins his first title in a long lost federation, a television title held proudly over his head, wearing the crimson mask.
No more lonely nights, it's all for you
A wedding photo, Xavier and Cari Cross holding each other close for a photo op. In the back ground you can see some familiar faces.
I have traveled many miles
On a plane trip for an overseas tour, Andrew Jacobsen is trying to see how many red vines he can get in Xavier's mouth without waking him up.
I've seen tears and I've seen smiles
Xavier beaten and bloodied, holding clutching onto the NCW National Championship the just twenty-four hours after losing his wife.
Just remember that it's all for you/
A picture of Xavier with his three children, smiling, holding each other tight. The sound of Ozzy’s voice is drowned out by chants of his name.
Its the current time and date, as the camera focuses on an empty metal chair. A door opens in the room, as Xavier walks over sitting down on the chair.
Xavier Cross: “Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. This is...No more Roads. Call it my swan song, my last hurrah. Throughout my career, I’ve been pretty open, honest with everyone the good and the bad. I never hid from it, I never ran from it. Occasionally made excuses for it, and tried to talk my way out of it. But it was me, it was my journey. I’ve fiddled with this project over the course of the last few years. Usually getting dragged down thinking that I was making it only for myself, and maybe I am. Maybe this can be my last self serving jerk off session. But I’m gonna do it anyway, fuck ‘em. I’d like to start this off, I want to thank everyone. Everyone who helped my create this, who gave their two cents even for a moment or whatever. The simple fact is, when it comes to wrestling, the smallest amount of effort put in, is your own. It’s the magic you create with others that makes a superstar.”
Don't forget me as the colors fade
The controversial scene of Spike Kane crucifying Xavier during the Empire run.
When the lights go down
The Council makes its debut, as Xavier stands Ulf, Sandman, and Kole.
It's just an empty stage
Becoming a pawn for The Pack, standing alongside the greatest villains in wrestling history.
Okay
Alison Valance: “Your winner and NEW IWF World Champion….Xavier Cross!”
Xavier Cross: “Y’know, you get goosebumps looking back. Like, it felt like every day I was making history. There’s alot of luck on my side, I got to come up surrounded by incredible competitors. Reckless Jack was my idol, and I think I made him proud. I always imagined I’d be something more, but deep down I never truly knew if I could do it. But it’s been magical, I’ve had my lows and I’ve took ‘em on the chin. But my problems were never anyone else’s fault by my own. Every injury I ever sustained in that ring wasn’t because of unsafe workers. I’ve been blessed with incredible talent from guys like T-Money, who’ve most of you might not have ever heard of, came up in the late 90’s. He was the top guy when I broke in, to guys like Dean Harper who I truly believe has had the greatest impact in this business starting off. I’ve also had the pleasure of working behind the scenes with some of the brightest minds of this wrestling generation. Guys like Roberto Verona, Adam Knite. You know the thing about Verona, he might get a bad rep in the dirt sheets from time to time. He’ll frustrate the ever-living shit out of you. But I think he has a superpower, you can walk into his office furious, or deadset on something. You’ll open that door, and there he is. Doing thirty different things, you immediately kind of feel dumb just from realizing what he’s trying to do to manage everything. But he’ll never make you feel dumb, no matter how stupid your idea is, and trust me. I’ve had some dumb ideas. But that’s the true heart of this business. We have some amazing creativity, but it’s the guys bending the world making our dreams come true, allowing us to do this. There is tons of credit given to the ones winning titles, doing the spots. But I don’t think the staff gets the shine they deserve, but I think that may be part of the job. You do it not for the recognition, but the fact that it needs to be done. So I reckon this is my love letter to the suits behind the scenes making dreams possible.”
Yes, I've been a bad guy
We see Xavier and Mandi Matthews embracing as Steve Awesome looks on in disgust.
Been higher than the blue sky
A casual shot of Xavier sitting at a bar, his face flushed red, clearly drunk as he raises a glass giving the camera a wink.
And the truth is I don't wanna die an ordinary man
A scene of Xavier at the Gorilla Position, just behind the curtain getting last-minute advice from Roberto Verona, who’s hair looks perfect even with a headset on.
I've made momma cry
We see a very young, infant Xavier Cross waddling to his mother.
Don't know why I'm still alive
various cringe worthy clips from the compound match with Dean Harper.
Yes, the truth is I don't wanna die an ordinary man
Rookie Xavier, throws an X above his head before launching himself off the big screen, doing multiple flips before crashing into his opponent and a crash pad.
Many times I've lost control
Clear footage of Xavier throwing a chair across the locker room, destroying anything he can get his hands on.
They tried to kill my rock 'n' roll
A cut to Xavier on the phone, clutching his jaw with his hand. Tears welling up in his eyes, as he glances at the camera. Waving it off, this was the moment he found out Paulie had passed away.
Just remember I'm still here for you
The short time that he was a mentor to Ryan Blade, walking him through some holds in the ring earlier in the day before a show.
I don't wanna say goodbye
Xavier sitting in the locker room trying to collect himself during the Spike Kane memorial night.
When I do, you'll be alright
The ending of the grudge match between Xavier Cross and rival-friend Will Washington falling off the top of a ladder and crashing through the ring.
After all, I did it all for you
Xavier leans in kissing the forehead of Vivienne Rodgers, resting a chin on his shoulder when they had gone to Ireland together.
Xavier Cross: “Yo...Yo. My name is X and I’m here to say. Eff yo B, have a nice day. I’m here to win titles, you’re just here to play. GWC you don’t know me, but soon you’ll all be a victim to that one, two, three.”
