The dressing room was silent as Nick Knight sat drinking a beer. It was his tenth or eleventh of the night and he was looking buzzed in the rearview mirror. The arrival of Lucipher had not been a total surprise, but it had still thrown him for a loop. Things were always different when this darker version of his little brother was around. Sometimes it was good, and sometimes it was bad.
Nick finished off his beer and tossed the empty into the trash can, before reaching into the cooler for another. Someone would need to make a beer run soon, but he knew that he could always send one of Crosse’s Disciples. In there eyes, as in his brother’s, Nick was some sort of chosen one. Popping open his fresh beer his phone began to play Rock Lobster.
"Why didn't you warn me he was back," Penny asks, before he can even say hello.
"I wasn't sure." Nick takes a sip of his beer. "Not until the lights went out and he began to speak."
"You were suspicious though," she accuses.
"I wasn't one hundred percent sure.” He defends himself. ” It could have just as easily been some crazy fans wanting to be a copycat. Lou made sure most of his book is on the internet."
"So you really went out to help Gregor,” she asks, her tone much softer.
"That was my plan,” he answers. “I honestly like the kid and I have since I worked with him in New Orleans. Every thing changed when the lights went out and Lou came up on the screen.”
"You still could have saved him." He hates to hear the disappointment in her voice, but it was something she would never be able to understand.
"No I couldn't. Lou is my brother, whatever battle he chooses is also my battle."
"He scares me." The fear was obvious in her voice.
"He scares a lot of people."
"But he doesn't scare you?"
"Even if he wasn't my brother he wouldn't scare me. Lou is a kitten compared to some of the guys I was on Gator Island with. I mean to the best of my knowledge he's never eaten anyone, and I mean that literally."
"You were out there with a cannibal?"
"A couple of them. We also had a necrophiliac, a guy that skinned his victims like Buffalo Bill in Silence of the lambs, and a guy that claimed to be making ritualistic sacrifices to the sun god."
"Why were you locked up in that place?"
"The sick fuck running the place thought that I was the right kind of violent. He thought I was the perfect candidate for his little experiments."
"Nicky, what did he do to you?"
"Someday I'll tell you everything, but not over the phone."
"So how does the whole Sam/Lou thing work exactly?"
"I have no fucking clue. It's like they're two different people that share a body, but it's not split personalities. It's more like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but I'm not quite sure which is which."
"Lucipher is fucking evil!"
"Sam is a lawyer!"
True," she said, giggling. "Nicky I have to tell you something that will probably upset you, but it's important you hear it from me."
"Penny we said we…"
"It's not about that. They arrested Sleaze today on some pretty fucked up charges. I know how important he is to you, but I think they're true."
"What kind of charges?"
"Sex with a lot of underage girls. Some of them are claiming that he even drugged them. I know it's hard to believe, but there’s always been rumors in the business."
"Why would he ever do something like that?" Nicky was struggling to think of his friend as some sort of pedophile. "He's always surrounded by beautiful women."
"I don't know Nicky, but I wanted to be the one to tell you."
"I appreciate that. What's this going to mean for your movie?"
"Randy and I spent most of the day in meetings and we've got enough money to finish it without Sleaze. Another company might even be willing to pick up the entire cost so we don't have to worry about the legal bullshit."
"Good. If you're short let me know. I might be able to get some cash together for you. Wrestlers love porn after all."
"Everyone loves porn. Even the Mormons, they just lie about it."
"How do you think they get their motors running to go into the bedroom and make kid number twelve. I mean Jesus foreplay has to be like yodeling into the Grand Canyon.” Nick begins to laugh loudly at his own joke.
“Are you drunk?”
“I’m getting there.”
“Guilty conscious?”
“Maybe a little, but mostly my knee just fucking hurts. I also miss you and the kid, but I understand that you couldn’t come out. It was kind of pointless with me on the shelf.”
“I don’t know, there is one point I wouldn’t mind seeing,” she teases.
“I’d be more than happy to show it to you, but it’s going to have to wait. Lou wants me to go with him back to Vegas for some reason. I promise I’ll be home next week, and I don’t give a fuck what anyone else has to say about it.”
“Good. I have something I want to show you.”
“I love you,” he says.
“I love you too Nicky.”
Knight hangs up the phone.
