Nick yawned as he stepped off the plane and began walking across the tarmac. The jet way for his gate was broken and they were doing things the old fashioned way. It was just par for the course these past few days. He loved his little brother, but this version of him could be hard to deal with and after a week of it he was beyond exhausted.
The air was thick with smoke as the wildfires lit up the eastern sky. He knew that Penny and JC were safe, but it would do him a world of good to see them. He had been away from home for far too long. Until recently he had never felt that way, so maybe at damn near forty he was finally growing up.
Penny had dropped him off at the airport so he caught an Uber back to the condo. Some of the things he saw at Lou's made his skin crawl and he had not slept well in ten days. All he wanted to do was fall face first into bed and sleep until he woke up.
A soft naked body slid into bed waking Nick. Opening his eyes to see the most beautiful face in the world he said, "Good morning."
"It's two in the afternoon sweety. What time did you get home," she asked.
"I took the last flight out, so I think maybe four." Nick yawned and stretched. "You have no idea how happy I am to see you."
"I think I have some idea." Her hand slides beneath the blanket making Nick moan. "I take it you missed me."
"Do you really think you need to ask?" Knight kisses her on her lips and then down to her collar bone.
"That feels nice." Nick kisses up to her ear and back to her lips. "Why did you need to stay in Vegas?"
"Did you come naked to my bed to talk about this?"
"No, but since we're here." She pulled away from his kiss. "What did Lou want with you?"
"He's using me to drum up membership in his church. He's painting me as some sort of dark messiah."
"You don't believe that bullshit do you?"
"Hell no, but he does. I don't know why, but it seems important to him. It's like it's his way of connecting with Jimmy."
"You shouldn't be playing along. He obviously needs some serious help."
"Dr. Goode disagrees. He thinks that not playing along could do more harm than good. Something about a personality schism and making him even more unstable."
"So you're just supposed to play your role as Jesus Christ, or whatever?"
"Out there yes. In here I'm just going to make you see God." Penny slaps Nick playfully, but he doesn't seem to notice as he slides beneath the covers.
"Oh. I forgot how good you are at… Hey, no teasing!
"But teasing is the best part," he says from under the covers. The couple made love for the next hour before making their way to the giant shower in the master bath. The washed each other beneath the streams of hot water and just enjoyed each other's company.
"How is the movie going," Nick asked.
"It's finished and it's really good. Right now we're just working on finding distributors since Sleaze is out of the picture."
"How bad are things for him?"
"Really bad. There's a good chance he's going to spend the rest of his life in prison and he fucking deserves it. I know he's your friend Nicky, but has ruined a lot of girl's lives."
"Penny I didn't know."
"Very few people did Nicky, at least not for sure. Trust me has I known I wouldn't have spent twenty years busting my ass to make him fucking rich."
"You realize you could have switched ass and fucking in that sentence and it would have still made sense,"Nick said, laughing.
"Fuck you!"
"You just did, but I'm game if you want to again."
"I have to go pick JC up from practice, or I would five or six more times."
"Why don't we go pick him up together and go grab dinner. Maybe that place with all the arcade games that he likes."
"The food at that place sucks."
"Yeah but I'll choke down a shitty cheeseburger if I get to hang out with my son. Especially since I'm not going to be able to take him to a Dodgers game while I'm home."
"You know you don't always have to take him places. He's happy just hanging out."
"I know. I'm just away so much that I like to try to make it up to him. Just like I try to make things up to you. Can you get a sitter Friday night?"
"Probably. What do you have in mind?"
"I was thinking we could just go out for a nice dinner. A bottle of wine, good food, and each other's company."
"I'll give Cin a call and see if she's busy."
"Who's Cin?"
"She lives down the street and watches JC sometimes. He has a huge crush on her which is funny, but he's got good taste. I wouldn't mind a little taste on camera or off."
"You know if I said something like that you'd kick my ass."
"Maybe, or I could think it was a good idea." She bit her lip and gave him a look that was both naughty and very nice. "Oh I see someone likes that idea."
"Penny don't…"
"But teasing is the best part, isn't that what you said Mr. Knight." Nicky just shook his head as he caught a fantastic view of her backside walking away.
A few minutes later JC and a friend ran over to the SUV with Penny in tow. “Hey Mom can Alex spend the night?”
“Well, that’s not really up to me,” Penny answers.
“What do you mean?” JC looks extremely confused.
“I mean I’m not the person you need to be asking,” she answers.
“Then who is?”
Nick rolls down the passenger side window and says, “I am.”
JC nearly jumps out of his skin and then a huge smile comes on his face. “Dad! Your home!”
Nick opens the door and climbs out to give his son a big hug. “Yeah I’m home for a few days. Did you have a good summer?”
“It was okay, I guess. My baseball team did really good, but I had to miss a bunch of games to go to Grandma and Grandpa’s house. Do you know how boring Indiana is?”
“Yes I do,” Nick says, laughing. “Did you know that before you were born your Mom almost made me move to Indiana?”
“That would have sucked!”
“God I missed you.” Nick picks up his son in another big bear hug.
“Can Alex spend the night?”
“I’d be happy to have Alex stay. You better go make sure that it’s alright that he goes to my house instead of your mom’s.”
“You handled that well,” Penny says, as the two boys run back towards the field.
“What do you mean.”
“You just sounded like a dad. Just so you know, I found it very sexy,” she says, giving him the look.
An hour later they were eating greasy burgers and playing arcade games. Nick and JC were playing Mortal Kombat and the younger Knight was quickly growing frustrated at getting his ass kicked over and over. “Damn it! How are you so good at this?”
“OK, first of all watch your mouth and second I’ve been playing this game since I was younger than you. Some of my buddies and I used to jump...well let’s just say we played a lot.
“What were you about to say?”
“I’ll tell you when you are a little older.”
“Why does everyone always say that? When will I hit this magical point of being older?”
“Alright lets go sit down and I’ll tell you a little about my life growing up.” Father and son walk over to their table and have a seat. “You know that I was born in Chicago and I lived there until I was fourteen.”
JC nods.
“Well you grandfather wasn’t around when I was growing up. That just left my mom to take care of things, which unfortunately you know about. I’m very sorry about that and it will never happen again.”
“I know if wasn’t your fault Dad, and I know you’re doing everything you can to keep it from happening again.”
“Thank you for understanding, you have no idea what that means to me. Anyway my mom was a waitress at a bar and really didn’t make enough to support us so we had to live in a place called Cabrini Green. It had a reputation for being one of the worst places to live in the country, and for a good reason. The place was run by gangs and drugs were everywhere, which sadly my mom got caught up in.”
“Is my grandma alive?”
“No buddy, She died when I was sixteen, but I was already in LA by then. So as I was saying I lived in a bad neighborhood and we didn’t have a lot of money, so we would have to steal to get what we wanted. That meant stealing from rich kids so we could have money to play games at the arcade or whatever it is we wanted to do. So I got good at Mortal Kombat by beating kids up and taking their money.”
“We got kids at school like.”
“I think we were a little different than those kids. We weren’t bullies, we were just kids trying to get something that we didn’t have. I’m not proud of it and I know it was wrong, but it was just normal to us.”
“I’m confused, how did you get to LA if your mom didn’t pass until two years later?”
“I ran away from home when I was fourteen. There was nothing for me in Chicago except an early death, so I hitchhiked all the way to California. I lived on the streets for a while, squatting in abandoned buildings and begging. I even did some stealing so I could buy food, which in the end saved me. I got caught snatching a purse in front of a night club and the bouncer was an old wrestler that knew your grandpa.”
“That old guy you took me to meet out in the desert right?”
“Yeah, I can’t believe you remember that. You were only, what five?”
“Something like that. He was nice.”
“Yes he was. Jerry was like a father to me when I really needed one. He saw more than a street kid doing bad shit to survive and he took a chance on me. He made sure I got my GED and he taught me how to wrestle. He’s the reason I was able to buy a nice house for you to live in and make sure that you go to the best school. I am a Knight, and wrestling is in my blood, but Jimmy is the person that brought that out.”
“Will you teach me to be a wrestler?” The sound of the boys voice was so sweet that it nearly melted Nick’s heart.
“We’ll talk about it when you’re older. Now go find Alex and have some fun,” Nick said, shooing his son away.
Just then Penny came back to the table carrying a giant stuffed sloth. “I hope you weren’t giving him the talk without me.”
“Shit with the internet he could probably teach me a few things about sex. No I was telling him a little bit more about where I grew up. I want him to have an idea of where I’ve come from and how I got to where I’m at right now.”
“Please tell me you left out the drunken porn star orgies,” she joked.
“It might have been an orgy, but I only had eyes for one girl there.”
“You probably could have had her, but you’re a big pussy.”
“I wouldn’t mind having her right now.”
“Nicky, we have to be careful when JC’s around.”
“I know. I was merely stating a fact. Friday night can not get here fast enough.”
The rest of the week might have been the slowest of Nick’s life. He fell into a routine that he loved; get up early and fix JC breakfast before taking him to school, hit the gym and get in a good workout, lunch at In-N-Out, a second workout to burnoff lunch, then dinner as a family. Finally Friday did roll around.

“You look fucking amazing,” he greeted Penny when the elevator doors to his penthouse opened. She was wearing a dark pink that hugged her curves, but was still classy. It matches her new hair color perfectly.
“You look pretty good yourself.” Nick was sporting a black custom made suit with a silver pinstripe that was made out of tiny skulls. “That suit is fucking amazing. Where did you get it?”
“Lou had it made for me. I know it’s probably connected to his whole church bullshit, but I really don’t care. It’s a kick ass fucking suit and it looks damn good on me.” Nick did a slow turn showing off his new threads from every angle.
“I can’t decide if you look better in that suit or in nothing at all.”
“Definitely the suit. It hides a whole lot of scars,” Nick says, with a laugh. “You on the other hand, I really want to rip you out of that dress right now.”
“You’re just going to have to be a good boy and wait. You promised me a good meal and I love Lucky Dragon, but I’m really feeling meat,” she teased.
“If we stay here you can have both.” He gave her his best seductive grin, which just made her laugh.
“You can really be a pig sometimes, you know that.”
“Hey you married me.”
“I also divorced you.”
“Yes, and you’re dating me again.”
“Touche.”
“Well I’m glad you’re hungry for meat, we’re going to an Argentinian steak house Randy told me about.”
“When did you talk to Randy?”
“I called him after you told me about Sleaze, to make sure he was alright. They were really close and I can understand how something like that can rock you to your core.”
“Did you talk about the movie?”
“We did when he had lunch with me last week. We talked about what it was like to film a scene with a woman after all of these years and we talked about the business side of things. He said you guys needed fifty grand to buy out Sleaze, so I gave it to him.”
“What? Repeat that please.” He couldn’t tell if she was legitimately angry or shocked.
“You guys are free and clear of Sleaze funding your movie. He has zero control over the movie and won’t make a fucking dime off of it. That should help you with finding distribution.
Penny runs across the room and throws herself into Nick’s arms. The big man catches her and squeezes her tight, enjoying the feeling of just holding her. “I think I could do another night of Lucky Dragon if you just want to stay in tonight,” she whispers in his ear.
“I want nothing more, but we have reservations.” The two seperate and Nick rearranges himself in his trousers. “You bring your keys for the Mustang?”
“Duh.”
“That’s my girl.”
The drive to the restaurant took half the time the GPS said it would since Penny was driving over a hundred miles per hour on the freeway. She did get pulled over, but she was able to use her girlish charm to talk her way out of it. Nick just sat in the passenger side and tried not to laugh at the cop drooling all over himself.
“This place is amazing,” Penny says as they walk into the restaurant. The smell of grilled meat was heavy in the air, making them both smile.
“Randy has always had great taste,” Nick says to her as the waiter leads them to a table. “He introduced me to you after all.”
“I try not to hold that against him,” she teases. “I hate to mix business and pleasure, but what exactly were the terms you made with Randy?”
“We didn’t discuss any terms.” Nick wipes his mouth on a cloth napkin. “I just called my bank and had them set up the loan.”
“Nicky that’s a terrible fucking business decision.”
“Maybe, but I trust you guys completely. I love you with all of my heart and Randy is one of my best friends in the entire world. I just want you both to be successful.”
“You have no idea how much that means to me. That doesn’t mean we aren’t going to sit down and come up with some sort of a contract. If you’re going to put up that kind of money you’re going to be a partner in this thing legally.”
“Penny all I want is for you to be successful, and this is my way of helping. I do have one request.”
“What’s that?”
“I want to see the movie.”
“Nicky I thought you…”
“It’s not like I’ve never seen your movies. Hell I think I’ve got every single one of them downloaded to my laptop and I’ve jerked off to them many times. This is just another movie, at least I keep telling myself that.”
“Well I have to tell you that it was a huge mistake shooting the scene,” He could see that she was doing her best to fight back tears. “Erich was a perfect gentleman and Randy did a great job as a director. The scene looks fantastic, but I was fucking miserable shooting it. I just wanted it to be you touching me and not someone else. I’m never going to do another scene.”
“I’m sorry.” Nick takes her hand and looks her in the eye. “I’m sorry that it was such a bad experience and I think a lot of that is my fault. I made way too big of a deal about it and I shouldn’t have.”
“No, you were right. Don’t get used to me saying that, but in this case you were. That is officially going to be the last scene I ever shoot.”
“That’s your decision to make, but we need to find some star power for our production company.”
“Production company?”
“Oh yeah I guess I forgot to mention that. I didn’t make any kind of deal with Randy regarding the fifty grand, but we did come to an agreement on the start of production company. The three of us will be partners, a threeway even split.”
“You’re a fucking jerk sometimes.” She throws her napkin in his face. “Did the two of you make any other big decisions without me.”
Just that we are going out for dinner to discuss the future of our company next week sometime.”
“Does this company have a name?”
“I was thinking something like Checkmate Pictures.”
“I like that a lot.”
“Shall we go home and celebrate?”
“I think so.”
The couple spent the rest of Friday night and half of Saturday in bed. Finally in the middle of the afternoon Penny made the drive across town to relieve her babysitter. Nick took the time to pick up the house a little bit before she brought JC back to hangout one more night before he had to catch a flight across country.

"Fuck you!"
"You just did, but I'm game if you want to again."
"I have to go pick JC up from practice, or I would five or six more times."
"Why don't we go pick him up together and go grab dinner. Maybe that place with all the arcade games that he likes."
