“The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” by V.E. Schwab.
There wasn’t much in contemporary literature that struck such a chord with Abigail, but when she’d first started reading this a few months ago, she knew. She felt it instantly. This book reminded her of Eternity, and any book which did that was going to be special, going to resonate. Going to leave an unforgettable impression. When she’d finished it, she decided it was not only one of her favourite reads of the year, but also one she just had to share.
So, six weeks ago, she’d decided to buy a second copy of the beautiful hardcover edition, not for herself, but as a gift. A gift she had already wrapped in colourful “Happy Birthday” wrapping paper and rewrapped in “Merry Christmas” paper. Not because she was cheap, but because it felt thoughtful and appropriate, given who the gift was ultimately for.
Eternity had layers to her, so it felt right that her gifts should too.
Originally, she’d planned to give it to Eternity backstage after their match, regardless of the end result. But it seemed fate had other ideas and wasn’t done trying to fuck up her plans yet. In her hands, the weight of the book felt even more uncomfortable now, given the irony of the plot. An irony made even crueler and much more tragic and heartbreaking than she’d ever intended after what transpired at the end of Diamonds Are Forever.
Addie LaRue makes a deal with the Devil to live forever, but the price she has to pay is to be forgotten by everyone...
Yeah, nice one Abby. You really nailed that gift, didn’t you?
Abigail shoved the beautifully wrapped gift into her travel bag, with a heavy sigh. She’d give it to Eternity, whenever she saw her next. She didn’t know when that might be, she only hoped it would be soon. Maybe Eternity would be at the last Sacrifice of the year...
Her phone beeped with a couple more texts. Another one from Vivienne telling her to be careful, and another one from Shea telling her to give up on Eternity, that she was not worth it. That none of this was worth it...
But they were both wrong, if Abigail wanted to get through to Eternity like she needed to, the last thing she could afford to be was careful. Nothing truly worth saving ever came without risk, and Eternity’s soul was worth saving...
Eternity was worth it all, every single last drop of her God forsaken blood...
They didn’t understand, but they would, eventually.
Too many people had given up on Eternity already, forgotten about her. Abandoned her right when she needed them most. Left her behind, to wither and die eventually, all alone...
Abigail wouldn’t make that mistake...not when there was so much at God damned stake.
