It was the 50th time the ad for engagement rings that Vivienne decided she needed to get out of the house. It had been months since her injury by the hands of Rowan. She spent time in therapy and did the physical therapy advised by her doctors.
She had idly considered retirement. Taking the time off to handle family matters. Maybe take some of the money and time she had to help with her family’s school. And she had but she felt like she found herself staring at a screen feeling incompetent.
There were only so much time she could focus on the dogs before even they would lay down on the floor to rest. Valentines Day only made her all the more aware of how empty her life was. What had she done before wrestling? Nothing, it had been her whole life.
She was able to hang out with her friends when they had free time but the question always came up on what she was going to do. Was she going to come back?
She wasn’t sure. She was afraid of Rowan. She was afraid of how much more her body could handle. She was worried about her prime passing her by. That the best she had ever been was chasing a belt for a year to lose it on her first defense. She was afraid of dying alone. She was afraid.
But being home bound revealed a lack of depth. Her favorite kind of movies had been romantic comedies but they failed to fill her with the same kind of joy. She’d tried cartoons, comics, anime, video games or even tiktok. But everything reminded her how alone she was.
Scrolling through Instagram she saw a gym selfie of Abigail and her four brothers. She looked so happy, and so not alone, surrounded by people she loved and that loved her. Surrounded by family. Like wrestling always had been for Vivienne. Like a lightning bolt, it hit her. That’s what she needed to do, that’s where she needed to be.
Endorphins come from exercise. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people don’t binge watch tiger king more than once.
Vivienne decided to give Abby a call, see how she was doing. How the gym was.
“Hello, Vivienne? Been a minute, how’s recovery goin’?” Abigail’s voice was always warm and friendly.
“Hey Abigail. Recovery is… boring. But better. How are you?”
“Glad ta hear you’re feelin’ better at least. Kinda miss ya on the road, girl,” Abigail said. “I’m okay, I guess. Tryna keep myself busy with trainin’ an’ stuff, ya know. Don’t suppose ya have ta bother with that as much anymore as Shea tells me you’re thinkin’ of retirin’. I think it’s a mistake. Girl, you’re not even 30 yet.”
“I honestly was thinking about maybe not retiring. Wrestling is my whole life so… I might need help getting back into ring shape.”
“Well, don’t ya have a whole family school for that? An’ I’m sure you’ll still be welcome in the IWF Devo at any time if ya wanna come down,” Abigail said. “I’m curious though, what made you reconsider?”
“I want someone to hold me accountable and push me. My school isn’t going to do that. I need like an account-a-buddy. And I see you go with your brothers so that made me think of it.”
“Been following Spencer’s Instagram, have you?” Abigail laughed, “He’s always postin’ gym selfies on there. But sure, if ya wanna come with us, you’re more than welcome.”
“I follow a lot of co-worker’s Instagram pages. Part of being supportive and helping people get that social media presence they need.” Vivienne sidestepped the question, “But yes, I’d like to go with you and your brothers next time you go.”
“Sure,” Abigail said.
“Thanks, you’re the best.”
“We will be going again in a couple of days,” Abigail said, “Meet you at Devo bright and early on Tuesday.”
