"LOVE OF FAMILY"
March 10, 2021 - 10:00 PM
"JJ, are you a'right?"
It was a nice, warm night to be out camping at the base of Enchanted Rock. As he let Fiona's comforting voice settle in, James Gilmore sat on the ground, looking at each of his friends in the eye as the fire glowed. It was clear that he had something on his mind, yet he couldn't find the right words to say.
"All of us sittin' around a campfire," JJ said. "How long's it been...?!"
"I like to think," Yulia, James' wife, chimed. "It has been far too long."
"Yeah," Rob Diamond, the Islander alum's tag team partner, piped in. "I wish we could've done these more often."
Caroline Machado, the eager Brazilian student, munched happily from a bag of Baked Lays, taking in her first camping trip with her All Infamous coaches.
"Look at Caroline," Rob smirked from ear to ear. "Even Crazy Bear's enjoying herself."
JJ nodded, realizing that these group of friends had become a family. It was this sense of family that has kept him going, that now is helping him prepare for fatherhood.
"So, yeah...I...uhmmm..."
"Spit it out, Little Bear."
JJ sighed, crying on the inside as he tried to express how proud he was to see this family grow. Yet he could only draw a blank...
"My dad wasn't a wrestler. He never competed in front of 90,000 in the Cotton Bowl in Fair Park. Nah...he was a court security officer at the Earle Cabelle Federal Building, tasked with makin' sure that the bad guys were kept in check durin' their criminal trials. He got his start as a cop in the middle of nowhere -- Loring Air Force Base in Maine.
He was 42 years old when he made the decision to become a district supervisor in the corporate realm, May 31, 2000. He was now supervisin' CSOs from all over North Texas, trainin' people to do the same things he once did. I like to think...that he stepped away from the grind 'cuz he didn't wanna have his body break down on him, that he wanted to see his kiddos move through college and be there for 'em as a guidin' light.
He was a strong man, tough-as-nails on the outside.
Yet warm and gentle on the inside.
I think about my dad's decision a lot. When will that point in time come for me?! Two weeks from now, I'll be 39 years old...and I'm married. I have a wife, Yulia, and twins on the way. There's gonna be a moment when the kids are gonna pull me back home and beg me to get outta the ring, get off the road. Other people have families that they leave behind when they're on the road for weeks on end.
It's a balancin' act -- a difficult one at that.
That's for the future though. Yet even in the present, as you're on the road, sometimes ya find a group of dudes and dudettes who become a second family. I wouldn't be here right now, a two-time World Champ, if it wasn't for people like Fiona McFly, Rob Diamond, and now...Caroline Machado. They are the ones layin' before me, the foundation that gives me good practice on bein' a father figure.
High Stakes, the Roulette.
If I'm gonna be worried about the future, then I gotta look at what's bein' cultivated.
After all...even I'll harbor my fair share of regrets, the feelin' ya get when ya THINK you've done everything but there's still somethin' missin'. I was only Men's World Champion twice...for at least 30 days each, brief moments in time. If I live to be a hundred years old, I don't wanna find myself thinkin' about bein' that one-hit or two-hit wonder most commentators often say about me.
That can all change.
Someone was right when he said that the Roulette opens doors and changes lives. Main eventin' Night of the Immortals, a chance to write your name into the history books in a way nothin' else can...and it's right there in front of me. I'm gonna push myself harder than ever before, I have to reach out and take it. I CA>N do that.
Not only that...I will.
Three years ago, ya had a group of psychos usin' 'family' as a means to hurt other people. Now...ya got a man, Roberto Verona, who throws money around and convinces others to destroy livelihoods under the guise of bein' a good father. But I'll be DAMNED if the last thing I ever do in this life is to allow my children -- and their children -- to become trapped in a world that says it's okay to denigrade and demean those who only wanna live their lives in peace for the sake of makin' money.
That's another regret I don't wanna harbor forever and ever.
Night of the Immortals is callin' me, the chance to be free from these regrets is within my grasp. I ain't givin' it up now, no matter how many more bucks Bertie can throw at someone to hurt me. If ya come so close, yet so far...then what's the point of livin' when you forget that last big dance ahead of you. Even if half the roster wants my head on a platter, I will make the entire planet know who James Gilmore is.
Thirty other men want that shot too.
Dean Harper, Nick Knight, Ulf Hednir among others.
Yet when my family is looked upon years from now -- personally and professionally -- I wanna leave it with respect and honor. I wanna leave it with a kind of dedication and performance that builds a good legacy that everyone can be proud of. Not just for me...but for my dad, friends, and loved ones. If anyone wants to come after me...I will do what must to defend what's been cultivated.
After all...what are we without family?!"
To be continued...
