The Fenix Academy. There are roughly two dozen students that are all surrounding the training ring, and a handful of trainers that are outside of the mat… the head trainer: Seth Evans… stood in the center of the ring, with his hands folded behind his back, as he paced slowly inside of the ring with his eyes looking back and forth at every student that stands on the apron. Among the trainers appear to have some grizzled veterans that have long since retired, and some younger ones including one-half of the IWF tag team,Vendetta, Jessé Marchand.
“Class… most of you have been taught how to handle yourselves in a basic one-on-one encounter, and even in a tag team competition; however…” Seth said. He drew in a deep breath, and nodded his head a few times, “You are not always going to find yourselves in something so simple. There are triple threats. There are fatal four-ways. There are elimination style battle royals. There are handicap matches. And then,” Seth smiled, “There are the classic over-the-top-rope battle royals. A-K-A, the Roulette!”
Seth paused, briefly, “That is the match that I am going to have the pleasure of participating in at the IWF pay-per-view, High Stakes, this month, as I try to battle with every other participant for a shot at the IWF World Championship! This type of match is one of the absolute toughest… most brutal… competitions that anyone could ever step into, but the reward! The reward is what makes it worth it. There are going to always be some key people that people think have the best opportunity to win, but then there are always going to be the people out there… that people are already counting out. We are going to call those people the ‘wild card’.
There is no denying that when I go out to that ring… I don’t consider myself a favorite. I don’t think that I have the best chance, because as I told the IWF-crowd when I first returned: I’m a little older, but a little wiser. I have been in these types of matches before, and have fared quite well! When I was battling for a shot at the IWF World Television Championship, I fought. I fought hard on the apron, but a Zuperkick from Xavier--” one of the students begins to laugh, and Seth’s eyes dart toward the student. A female. “Laugh now, Brigitte, Amber over there has been learning how to superkick with some of the best, and you’ll probably fall--”
“Right into Ulf’s arms!” Brigitte interrupted, but got a sudden dreamy look on her eyes, “How was that? Being in his arms…” Some of the fellow students nodded their heads, many getting the same glazed out, dreamy look in their eyes.
Seth chuckles to himself, “It was… interesting, to say the least. He’s a strong man. As most of you would know when you watch him compete, he can end you with a single punch.”
One of the male students chimes in, “What are you going to do to avoid that punch?”
Seth stops pacing inside of the ring, and squints his eyes at the student, “I’m going to dodge, duck, dip, dive, and… dodge. What else? But this isn’t about a potential shot against Ulf for the belt, this is--”
“But he is participating in the Roulette! Don’t you think you may encounter him? What if he aims that punch for you?” the same student chimes back in.
“Back to my point! I fought on the apron for as long as I could until the Zuperkick caught me out of the blue… You see: I would not have considered Xavier Zion to be a high card-- then, or even now-- do not misunderstand me, I am not here to insult him. I am not here to bash him. But what he did would be considered a wild card! This is the type of match that it is difficult to train for… difficult to plan for… it’s easy to go out there with a strategy, but that strategy means absolutely nothing when you receive a kick to the face!”
A third student, “So what are you going to do?”
Seth shrugs his shoulders, but smiles and beams with confidence, “I can tell everybody what it is that I am planning… and…” he takes a deep breath, “I don’t have one. I am literally going to go into the ring at Roulette with one thing in mind: that is walking out as the winner of the Roulette! Whoever stands in front of me is going to be my target! Whoever is behind me, is going to catch--” Seth brings an elbow to his hand, “--one of these! Now, don’t get me wrong… I’ve said it all before, and I’m going to say it again: I am not the same man I used to be. I’m not as fast as I used to be. I cannot fly as well as I used to. But what I do have is awareness! What I do have is experience! What I do have is the willpower, determination, and drive to continue fighting even when things seem the darkest… it took a Zuperkick to knock me off of the apron, while I was fighting off two other men who were just prying my fingers from the ropes. It took a lot! And at Roulette, it’s going to take a lot more to eliminate me.”
