Thea had been missing for over a week. Although Ulf had been victorious with his encounter over the monster on Sunday, and he was certain that he would see his daughter returned; the Wolves of Odin were still in search for her by order of Robi, and each day, Ulf had hoped that they would give him the good news. That they found her. That they found her unscathed.
Ulf had fallen asleep on the couch… held under his arm was the stuffed animal that was gifted to her by Robi. His eyes seemed to do a flutter in his sleep suggesting that he had entered a state of REM. He twitched with each thought that penetrated his weary mind.
“Pappa…” he could hear Thea calling out, as a shadowed little girl stared at him from the end of the hallway. A light illuminated behind her, and he stretched his hand out for her.
“Thea--” he called, although weakly. A sudden static seemed to immerse his mind; the image of the monster was right in front of him hidden in the static that you would typically see off of an old disconnected television.
“Pappa…” the image in front of him had called out, as the static dissipated. Ulf grunted as he tried to move toward her, but found that his arms and legs were stuck. “Hjelp meg!” she said, a screech hiding behind her voice.
“Jeg kommer!” Ulf shouted as he groaned louder and tried to will himself forward but to no avail. The static came back for one brief moment before things seemed to go back to normal, and suddenly… The monster was in front of him. As if breaking free from a spell, Ulf was able to lunge his arm forward and put a hand around his neck. He grimaced as he closed his hand around the monster’s neck, and it seemed to be gasping for air. The image behind him of his daughter faded, but Ulf asked, “Hvor er hun? Hvor er hun?!” he shouted, and repeated the question as he stood up and seemed to gain control.
“Ulf--” he heard the monster say his name in a low growl, as it hacked and coughed… finding itself unable to breathe. “Ulf--” it pleaded a second time, the voice becoming softer. “Ulf-- it’s not him--” the voice continued, begging for Ulf to come to his senses. Ulf blinked his eyes several times before finally seeing in front of him was not the monster, but rather Rori. Her face was turning a shade of blue when Ulf finally realized and he released her immediately, and had appeared apologetic.
“Rori-- Rori, baby, jeg er sorry. Jeg er so sorry!” Ulf seemed to be asking for her forgiveness as her face was slowly returning to its normal shade; she didn’t seem mad… but rather understanding. She could tell that he was dreaming-- hallucinating-- it brought about some concern for others. Ulf, still feeling remorse for his actions albeit unintentional, held Rori closer to him… she did not resist, but was breathing heavily.
“Babe, it’s okay--” she said, pressing her head against his chest, “--we’re going to find her, though. We’re close. Robi is close. She said that the Wolves were closing in on the monster’s last known location, and… tonight…”
The news seemed to excite Ulf, and he nodded his head, “Den jeg vil stay--”
“No!” Rori said, “No, baby, you can’t stay. You know that if you don’t take care of business, he is going to hurt her… your plane leaves tonight. You need to go to Proving Ground-- you and Robi both need to go to Proving Ground.” Rori insisted to him; she did not want to see any harm come to a girl who had become like her daughter since the two began seeing each other, “Take care of business. I’ll take care of Thea.” She said with a smile, trying to ease Ulf into accepting the terms… he knew that he had no choice.
He nodded his head in turn, knowing that she was right. Until they actually had her away from the monster, they could not do anything that would risk her being hurt. So long as he played by the rules, the monster swore that he would not bring harm to her.
