2 AM December 19
The International Terminal of LAX is a swarm of people coming and going from points all over the globe. Bruised and battered the three men known as The Brotherhood shuffle off of the plane struggling to even walk after the nearly fourteen hour flight from Sydney back stateside. Nick felt fantastic because The Church of Crosse was finally out of his hair and he had two uninterrupted weeks to spend with his family, but he couldn’t help but feel sad because it was the end of the line for The Brotherhood.
“I really wish you would reconsider signing that contract Gabe,” Nick says, to his dear friend.
“Nicky, I’ve had a blast the past couple of months, but this life isn’t for me.” Gabriel smiles and then winces when it pulls at the wounds on his forehead. “I belong back in Scotland sitting behind a desk looking at lines of numbers on a computer screen. It’s way less painful.”
“Believe me I understand, I had to think long and hard about whether or not I should sign my extension a few months ago. I finally decided to do it because the money was too damn good, and unlike you I don’t have a rich father in-law to give me a job,” Nick says, with a grin. “You should at least stay for a couple of days and rest before flying home. I can’t even imagine fourteen more hours on a fucking plane.”
“I used to go to Tokyo a few times a month for business, so I’m used to these long flights.” Crosse pulls his phone from the pocket of his track pants to check the time. “Shit I need to run, my flight’s in less than an hour.”
Nick extends his hand and then pulls Gabe in for a hug. “I’m going to miss you, brother. Take care of your family and we’ll come see you soon.”
“James you need to come visit sometime.” The two men embrace. “My kids would love to see their Uncle Jimmy, and if your wanted in the UK for something I have some powerful friends that can help make it go away.”
“You know you’re still the funniest Crosse, but that’s not saying much,” James said, a boyish twinkle in his eyes. “I’m going to be really busy for the foreseeable future, but if I can get away I’ll pay you a visit.”
“Remember that I love you both, and I’ll text as soon as I land in Glasgow.” Gabe merged into the sea of people and disappeared leaving the Knight brother’s alone.
“We should probably go find our baggage claim,” James says.
“Yeah, the last thing that I want is for some asshole to run off with my ring gear again.”
“Who the fuck would want a blood stained hockey sweater?”
“The last I checked the bidding on it was over a thousand dollars. That should by a lot of toys for a lot of kids this Christmas,” Nick answered.
“Wait, you’re auctioning it off to by kids toys?”
“I’ve been pretty lucky the past couple of years and it’s time I give back a little bit. I grew up in the projects and there were a lot Christmas mornings when we didn’t have anything to open and if we were lucky we had a dollar store stocking filled with dollar store candy and maybe some school supplies.”
“Nicky Nightmare, the greatest death match wrestler ever, has grown a heart,” James says chuckling.
“No, I just grew up. Something you should maybe think about doing, before it’s too late.”
“You sound like my mother.” James gets a look on his face as if he’s just tasted something bad. “I figure if anyone could understand me wanting my freedom it would be you.”
“One of these days your going to start seeing the world in a much different light. I have not given up my freedom, I have just made the choice to settle down and be a family man. If Dad was here he would tell you the exact same thing.”
“I guess I just have found the right person or persons to make me want to settle down.” The pair weaved their way through traffic heading in the direction of baggage claim. “I mean if I had two hotties to go home to at night I might change my mind.”
“Are you going to start this shit again?”
“Well it’s true. Every single time you walk in your front door you have two beautiful women to greet you. That probably makes it pretty easy for you to choose to go home.”
“You’ve got shit backwards again brudder, you have to choose to want to come home before you can find someone to come home to every night. Maybe settling down in one place for a while will help you put down some roots.”
“I’m settling in Las Vegas, you know that shit doesn’t grow in the desert. I mean most people have astroturf lawns for their dogs to shit on. I think I’m probably a long way off from settling down.”
“I guess only time will tell, baby brother.” The reach the baggage claim and Nick pulls off two hard sided suitcases, and three items in crates. “Can you go and grab one of those carts for me. There’s no way in Hell I can carry all this shit.”
“What the fuck is it all?”
“Clothes obviously, a little souvenir from Civil War, and presents for JC and Cin,” Nick answered.
“Why in the fuck would you want a souvenir of that shit? I mean aren’t the scars enough?”
“I have so many scars that I honestly couldn’t tell you when I got most of them. No I’ve either saved stuff from matches or I’ve bought posters and shit online. I figure they can be used to decorate the Academy when it’s finished.”
“Alright, what are the other two crates?”
“Surfboards.”
“Dude this is LA, you but surfboards a hundred different places.”
“These are custom shaped boards that are completely one of a kind. I talked to the guy at the shop that Cin uses when the Australia tour was announced to find out who he would recommend. He gave me a name and I’ve been working with him for months to get these done.”
“How much did you spend?”
“I think Cin’s was five grand and JC’s was three.”
“Holy fuck!”
“I’ve been gone for over a month, I had to bring them something special.”
“What did you get for Penny?”
“She doesn’t surf, so I got her a custom opal necklace and bracelet set.”
“Sucking you–”
“Don’t fucking say it.”
Nick loads up the cart and carefully wheels it out to the curb where Penny is waiting with a borrowed Suburban so they had plenty of room to load everything that he brought back from The Land Down Under. A huge smile comes across her face and it took every ounce of strength that he had not to drop everything and run over to her.
“What it the Hell did you bring back,” she asks, looking over the cart full of stuff.
“A souvenir from the match and presents for Cin and JC.” He finally reaches the side of the SUV and wraps her arms the couple exchanges a toe curling kiss. “I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too, sweety. I’m sorry I have to ask, what kind of presents come in crates?”
“Thank you! I said the exact same thing.” Penny looks at James with nothing but disdain in her eyes. “What? I did.”
Nick just shakes his head, the animosity between his girlfriend and brother drove him nuts. They were two of the most important people in his life and they could barely stand to be in the same room together. “I had custom surfboards made for them by one of the top guys in Australia.”
“Well I can definitely see why you asked me to bring something bigger than the Mustang.”
“You sure you won’t come crash at the house tonight,” Nick asks James.
“Yeah I’m just going to go pick up my rental and hit the road. Fat Tony has a room booked for me for a couple of weeks until I can find something more permanent.”
“I should have something for you by then.” Nick gives his baby brother a hug. “Text me when you get to Vegas, and thank you for your help.”
“I will, and I was more than happy to screw over that asshole.”
Nick and Penny quickly load up the luggage and jump on the freeway in the direction of Hollywood. It felt amazing to be home and he could not wait to see the look on all three members of his family when they opened their gifts. He had been away for over a month and video call meant that he could see their faces (and more) every day it was not the same as being their three or four days a week.
“So what did you bring me?” She ran her hand up his thigh teasing him. “Don’t I deserve a present too?”
“You’ll get your present when everyone else gets theirs, which means the faster you drive the faster we’ll get home.” Penny sped up a bit and with little traffic out at two in the morning they made good time. She pulled up in the circle drive and parked next to Cin’s old VW Bug, before he could even get the door open Cin and JC were out the door to meet him.
“It’s about time you got home.” She threw her arms around him and gave him a soul searing kiss. “So what did you bring me?
He smiled seeing how she and JC were both like Kids at Christmas, and since it was just a few days away they sort of were. Shit he had not had a chance to think about Christmas while he was gone and would have to do something about that over the next couple of days. “JC help me unload these two crates and carrying them into the house.”
It only took a couple of minutes and the whole family found themselves sitting in the living room with two large wooden crates in the middle of it all. Penny had wandered off into the kitchen for snacks and Nick sent JC to the garage for a pry bar. Five minutes later everyone was settled into their spots and the eldest Knight was grinning from ear to ear.
“JC go ahead and open that one on the right.” The grandson of Jimmy Knight takes the pry bar and carefully opens the wooden crate. The inside was filled with woodshavings that he carefully began to dust to the side until he lays eyes on the contents. Suddenly wood shavings go everywhere until the entire surf board can be seen. It was pearl white and purple with black trim and in the center of it all was the Knight chess piece logo.
“It’s fucking beautiful,” the teenager whispers.
“Language James Christopher!”
“Sorry, but it is beautiful.” JC walks over to his dad and gives him a big hug. “Thank you Dad. I love it.”
“I’m glad. Alright Cin, your turn.” Already knowing what was inside Cin attacks the crate and throws wood shavings aside. The board inside was identical to JC’s but instead of the chess piece logo the word Cinful was written out in a neat script.
“Cinful,” she asks, one eyebrow raised.
“I liked the way that it sounded, did I fuck up?”
“No, you did not fuck up.” Cin walks over to Nick and gives him a kiss on the cheek. “It’s absolutely perfect and I cannot wait to take it out on the water.”
“Well go load the boards in the back of the El Camino and you can head to the beach as soon as you get up tomorrow.”
“Yes!” JC starts to finish pulling his board from the packaging and just stops. “Wait, doesn’t Mom get a present?”
“Yes your mother gets a present.” Nick digs in his backpack and pulls out a carefully wrapped package. Penny takes it from him and then tears into it like the Tazmanian Devil until she reveals a jewelry box inside. Not sure what yo expect she opens it slowly revealing a necklace made of ten tear drop opals of various sizes and a bracelet with a single tear drop hanging from it.
“Nicky this is amazing.” He could tell that she was fighting back tears, so he just wrapped her up in his arms.
“I know you always thought that one opal necklace of your mom’s was pretty, and now you have one of your own.”
“She’s going to be pissed when she sees it.” Penny starts laughing, which made Nick laugh. “You thought that she hated you before, she’s going to want to murder you when she sees these.”
“Good, then I can kill the bitch and call it self defense.” Penny playfully punches him in the chest. “Ouch! You know that your mother’s a bitch so don’t even pretend to be offended.”
“My mother is a bitch, but that doesn’t mean you get to say it.”
“I don’t understand?”
“No one does, Dad. Woman are confusing and we men have no choice but to just go with the flow.”
“The boy is wise beyond his years, Nicks says, with a chuckle.
“I’m going to go load my board in the back of the El Camino and then go to bed. You kids keep it down tonight. The last thing we need is a repeat of last week.”
Nick looks at the girls with a raised eyebrow, as if to ask what his son was talking about. They both turned red in embarrassment before Cin finally answers. “Umm…JC came home earlier than he was supposed to and kind of caught me going down on Penny in the poolhouse.”
Nick begins to laugh and he doesn’t stop laughing until he is out of breath. “It’s not funny Nick, he’s been teasing us about it for like a week. A boy should not see his mother like…like that!”
Nick starts laughing again, but finally is able to get himself back under control. “You two need to relax because that’s fucking hilarious and JC thinks it’s fucking hilarious. He’s thirteen he know what sex is and he knows that all three of us have it. He even knows that Penny moans like a pornstar in real life, hell I’ve been jerking off to her movies for a month and I think it’s safe to say she holds back in a few of them.”
“What do you mean you were jerking off to her porn,” asks an obviously annoyed Cin. “Wasn’t what we were doing over video call good enough for you?”
“It was great, but sometimes I wanted a round two…or three.”
“You are incorrigible Nick Knight.” Cin slaps him playfully on the arm and when she bends over to pick up her new board he returns fire with a slap on the ass. “Absolutely incorrigible.”
“I will work on cleaning this stuff up tomorrow. Right now I’m going to take a shower and go to sleep, because it’s been a long fucking day.”
“Language Father!”
3 PM December 19
Nick Knight sat by his pool in a pair of board shorts and xXx Wrestling Academy t-shirt. His eyes are closed and his shades are blocking out the ray and he was just about to fall asleep when his phone begins to play The Imperial March. A smirk comes across his face as he leans down and grabs his phone and accepts the video call. Normally the last person in the world he would want to speak with is Lucipher Crosse, but he knew why his brother was calling and it was a call he wanted to take. “Louis, how nice to hear from you.
Crosse’s face is bright red in rage and the vein in his forehead looks like it’s about to explode. Nick just keeps on giving him a smug smile. “Don’t you fucking give me a it’s nice to hear from you. You are trying to ruin me Nicky, what would our father say?”
“Jimmy Knight would say that you’re off your fucking rocker and really should seek some professional help. He would say that he is far from being any kind of a god and you sure in the hell ain’t Jesus Christ. I’m sure that there are a whole lot of other things that he would say, but that’s not important. What can I do for you?”
“You know very well what you can do for me!” Spit flies from Crosse’s mouth and looks on the verge of a total meltdown. “Give back the one thing that I have been working for my entire life!”
“Ah, that.Nick taps his chin like he's thinking it over. "I don't think so."
“But it’s mine!”
“No it’s mine Lou. You see under law here in the United States if a property can be seized if it is used in committing a crime, but your a lawyer you should know all of that. Well the government typically auctions off this property and if you know where to go you can get some good stuff cheap. You know cars, boats, sometimes even airplanes; so just imagine how cheap I was able to get a worthless patch of land in the middle of the desert for.”
“It’s not worthless!”
“Your right, but the feds didn’t really do a very good job of selling its finer features. The best one being that me buying it out from under you would really piss you off.”
“Nicky I will buy it from you. Name your price!”
“You know I’ve been giving it a lot of thought on what to do with it. I’ve had a couple of the big mega churches come and make offers A casino has made an offer because they’re thinking about building a new resort. At the end of the day though I decided to keep it and I’ve got some big plans for it.”
“Nicky no, you can’t do this to me…to my followers. You are destroying everything that every single member of The Church of Crosse has worked so hard to accomplish. You are taking from them their Compound!”
“Yeah I guess I am, oh well.” Nick goes to end the call and then stops himself. “Oh and Lou you might want to get out of the country fast. I hear that the state department is reviewing their diplomatic agreement with Talola, and there just might not be one.”
“Nick you son of a bitch you–”
"Reach out and touch faith Lou."
Nick ends the call and goes back to sleep.
