Show Notes
-This was the inaugural show for Retro Championship Wrestling, a Texas-based independent promotion that hopes to partner with the world’s top promotions including the Imperial Wrestling Federation. It is designed to emphasize the sporting aspect of professional wrestling as opposed to the entertainment aspect. Advertised as a family-friendly, old-school product with a modern high-definition twist, RCW will be syndicated across the United States on MeTV stations nationwide and streamed online via Netflix.
-Internationally-acclaimed a capella group Pentatonix, who originated in Arlington, TX, opened the show by singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The nation’s colors were presented by the UT-Arlington ROTC detachment; following the national anthem was a flyover conducted by the famous Navy Blue Angels.
-For the charity benefit match, longtime Texas Rangers PA announcer Chuck Morgan served as guest ring announcer. Baseball infielder Corey Seager, the 2020 NLCS and World Series MVP who signed a 10 year, $325 million contract with the Rangers, served as guest timekeeper. Former mixed martial arts referee John McCarthy served as special in-ring enforcer.
-Caroline and Fiona each donated $25,000 to their respective charities, the ASPCA and Lighthouse for the Blind, following the match.
-In his first on-screen appearance since September of last year, and in his first appearance since being shot three times in his left leg in December, RCW co-owner James Gilmore welcomed fans and TV viewers to the show. Despite sporting a cast and crutches, Mr. Gilmore was in particularly high spirits as he addressed the lively crowd, relating Retro to his own experiences watching indy wrestling as a youth. He also assured fans that he's on the path to a March recovery and return to the ring.
-Donnie DeMuro, formerly a freelance wrestling journalist dubbed “Awesome Stick Labor,” did solo commentary throughout the program.
-While RCW will field separate men’s and women’s divisions, the RCW Tag Team titles are unique in that they will be a mixed-gender championship.
-Despite falling temperatures, brisk winds from the north-northwest at 15-25 MPH, and the potential for single-digit wind chills, paid attendance for the show was 33,844. The total attendance, after adding 7,500 complimentary tickets, was 41,344.
