The camera opens up to a wrestling school, empty with signs of The Irish Overseas Wrestling School all over the school. IWF staff popped by after the official entry made by the school to place Declan O'Connor in the rumble. Declan sits in the middle of the ring, closing his eyes.
"Wow, I never expected my teachers to feel I'm ready for going up against the best wrestlers in the world, Imperial Wrestling Federation. I was trained right here in this wrestling school. It's been a long, lonely and hard road for me to reach this stage of stepping in the ring. But it wasn't like any other stories where you hear rich kids being able to afford wrestling lessons or some disadvantaged kid in the streets that ended up being a wrestler."
Declan shook his head, having a slight smirk on his face.
"No. I live with my parents, but they do jobs that barely make ends meet and couldn't afford wrestling lessons for me. When I was eleven years old, I didn't know what wrestling was until it happened to be on television. I thought the moves they do in the ring was extraordinary. Also, I had tendencies to get angry, and my parents wanted me to do something. Seeing they couldn't afford wrestling lessons for me, I had to go down to the wrestling school. I watched a few times, but when the school teacher asked me to do wrestling, I accepted, but I didn't have any money."
Declan was tossed a sports bottle as he lifted the cap off and drank some Gatorade.
"So they told me that if I do some chores before the lessons started off cleaning the floors, cleaning the toilets and sinks, showers and changing rooms, I will get wrestling lessons for free. I did, and the coaches saw me as someone who had deep anger issues because I had plenty due to my parents having to work so hard, not their fault, of course, but it made me angry they were stuck at dead-end jobs, to feed me, my brother and my sister. You all don't know how lucky you all are that you already had wrestling careers, ones I know about any way or somehow discovered wrestling while in the streets."
Licking his lips, looking intent on the camera with anger, but unlike all the others who had anger issues, Declan wasn't losing control with it.
"I was so vicious with my wrestling opponents that instead of letting it go, they got me anger management and sat with me throughout the entire sessions I had. Of course, my parents were there too because they believed and were concerned I would go and join a gang in the streets because, in Ireland, gangs are prevalent. Luckily, wrestling coaches and my parents got me out of that before I could even break the law."
Although it was a very unusual story because it was always one way or the other, never the balance of living in a home somewhere, but being poor at the same time.
"So I have gotten better four months later and got back in the ring to wrestle. Sure, I was going to have anger here and there, but it wasn't at others anymore. I used anger inside the wrestling ring because I knew the school coaches were right in the long run; I wouldn't get anywhere if I were always full of hate towards the world. I became happier and aimed to be one of the top students they had at the school."
Declan was nice and comfortable sitting in the ring as he took another sip of his sports drink.
"Another problem they saw within me was my size. Despite my size, I was going to be a technician and a bit of a powerhouse wrestler because I wanted to be different. Of course, there were other wrestlers around, but I wasn't going to be another one who would regularly use high flying moves all the time. So they worked with me to stand out from the other smaller wrestlers. I will also use a lot of kicks in my matches as well. I can be a very vicious man in the ring, but one with respectability because I love this business and admire this school, allowing me to show off my Irish Diamond Technician skills to the world."
He was smiling with a proud look like he had won the world title, obviously, for a good reason.
"That's why I can be sitting in the ring, happy that I'm doing something I've wanted to do since I was eleven years old. My parents fully accept that I aim to prove that I made it into one of the most demanding sports to make yourself a mark, being a professional wrestler. They always supported me to chase the dreams I believe in. I'm not a cocky and brash Irish guy that most of you think; I'm a respectable guy, but don't think that because I'm happy to compete in the rumble, I wouldn't be afraid to venom back."
It meant something else in everyone else's mind, but for Declan, it sounded as perfect as he could.
"Venom, in my terms, means hitting the bite back. I use venom instead of the bite because I have a pet that would most likely use its poison on you if you cross the path. My pet tarantula is known as Aiden. I slash my throat in dedication to it. He's my life, and I take him everywhere. I named a wrestling move after him. I'm Declan O'Connor; if you were wondering my name, I would prove who I am with a Diamond Effect that will sparkle straight in your eyes, like the cards when you play poker or blackjack, but I love diamond jewellery as well. I will speak more later today what this match means to me."
Declan got up from the ring as the cameras went black.
