He's Japanese American having been born in America and lived there for the first ten years of his life before his faily went back to Japan and lived in Osaka. Ryusuke is the son of a professional wrestler who never reached his potential in America and quit soon after to build up an import export business. Ryusuke was not going to come to America as he was afraid the same thing would happen to him as happened to his father.
But his father died of a heart attack aged 61 and on his death bed told Ryu to live his dream. Ryu researched and found out about the gladiator tournament and decided to come to America to try out.
