TOKYO - So I was reading through some independent Japanese wrestling columns earlier this morning, and one in particular stood out to me for all the wrong reasons. The writer, Noriyuki Obata, summed up his take on the Ram-Charlie Van Ruth match with a single sentence. The English translation reads as follows:
"I'm sorry, but even an 18-year-old rookie ought to know how to be a confident hard-ass, no-nonsense competitor. Yet he's too even-keeled in the biggest moments, not pushing himself unless it's convenient for him to do so."
That's just it, smartass.
The kid's only eighteen years old. Most folks his age would probably be thinking about college by now.
As someone who's followed wrestling for nearly 30 years knows, you learn by trial and error. I've read Marshall's files, checked out his disciplinary record in high school, and I can fully understand why he'd want to shy away from the person he used to be. Maybe someone like you ought to realize that he's trying to better himself, to avoid a life that could've been wasted had he not decided to enter this business in the first place.
Maybe he's underselling himself. It happens more frequently than you think. Sure, he's main evented a few times, but you can't possibly expect him to just "click" right away. It takes time -- and some people take more time than others.
But flat-out tanking? I think not -- and I think you can do better than to say that.
He deserves better than that.
