September 4, 2023 -- 7:55 AM.
James Gilmore was not feeeling very well. In fact, he'd been feeling under the weather throughout the past several days. Yet on this somewhat pleasant morning in downtown Fort Worth, the Islander alum knew that he had to be in this packed courtroom, jammed full of onlookers and attorneys from all backgrounds, for the biggest fight of his entire life. It wasn't exactly hyperbole either, especially since his longtime friend and business partner Fiona McFly stood at his side, head bowed and eyes closed as the minutes ticked down to the start of the day's proceedings.
In her mind, Fiona felt like ripping people's dicks off.
Yet she, too, felt helpless as the start time of the hearing drew closer.
Tick, tock, tick, tock...
JJ couldn't believe that the thirty days had already passed, thirty days since Yulia handed him that eminent domain notice. He saw the gleefulness in her eyes, the smugness in her visage as she took her spot on the opposite side of the courtroom, flanked by the mysterious Shelby and a gaggle of lawyers. It felt like she was expecting this day to come, a moment in time that JJ and Fiona had decided to fight the order in this forum instead of simply giving in. After all, the Academy was simply too much of a blessing for them to simply just let it go and start over from scratch.
Tick, tock, tick, tock...
Inside JJ's mind, seconds felt like minutes.
Minutes felt like hours -- but eventually, the Kobayashi Maru had to set sail.
The only problem is, all he knew was fighting battles inside of a wrestling ring. He knew nothing else about the world outside of professional wrestling, and he had no fallback plan save for training eager, fresh-faced, young prospects. It was a certainty that his best days as an in-ring competitor have passed him by, but when push came to shove? When Yulia decided to hurt him in a way that transcended the very thing he did for a living? JJ decided to seek help from a friend he'd known since the 1992 when they were both in 5th grade, an era of time when things seemed to make sense.
That friend was Tim Bowman, his attorney and former tag team partner on the independent circuit.
Affectionately nicknamed "Timbow," he was one-half of the Grumpy Young Dudes tag team that took the defunct Redemption Wrestling by storm. He and JJ, who wrestled under the stage name "Johnny Gillmen," were the longest-reigning champions in that company's history. Yet Bowman had a passion for studying the law and criminal justice, and he wrestled the indy circuit as a way to get him through law school without amassing a sizeable debt. They often played off each other for laughs, with fans and critics describing the pairing as comedic gold.
On this day, there was nothing funny about the hearing the lied ahead.
Tick, tock, tick, tock...
