Mika slowly opened her eyes to the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital. The bandages around her arms and head felt tight, a reminder of the ordeal she'd just been through. The room was sterile, and a distant beeping from the machines punctuated the eerie silence. After a week, they'd declared her "stable" and had begun to prepare her discharge papers. But inside, she felt fragmented.
As she stepped out of the building, the world seemed louder, brighter, and infinitely more terrifying than she remembered. She felt like a child lost in an amusement park – every turn presenting her with a grotesque caricature of reality. Walking past an alleyway, she caught a glimpse of her reflection. Her black hair looked dull, and her once bright green eyes were now murky. What caught her attention was the sinister grin that spread across her face. It wasn’t hers. Or was it?
She started to see things, shadows lurking just beyond the corner of her vision. Whispers echoed in her ears, their origins always just out of reach. But one voice, darker and clearer than the others, was always present. It spoke of chaos, urging her to indulge in her darkest desires. One evening, Mika stood atop a building, gazing at the city below. The voice told her to jump, promising that the feeling of the wind rushing past her face would be exhilarating. But another voice, softer and fainter, pleaded with her to step back.
Her life became a twisted dance, balanced between sanity and madness. Every step she took, every choice she made, was influenced by the dueling voices in her head. And with each passing day, the line between them blurred. As the weeks wore on, Mika found herself doing things she'd never imagined. Stealing, lying, manipulating those around her. The city became her playground, and its inhabitants her toys.
Beneath it all, there was a part of Mika that still clung to a fragmented reality, desperate to break free from the darkness consuming her. So, she hatched a plan. One night, she gathered all the tools she'd need and returned to the hospital. She intended to find the root of her psychosis and end it once and for all. The building was silent, save for the occasional soft murmur of a patient.
Sneaking into the records room, she found her file. She learned of an experimental treatment she had unknowingly been a part of. A drug, meant to cure severe mental illness, but in her case, it had magnified it. Slipping back out the way she came, Mika stood in the rain, her black hair clinging to her face. The rage, the betrayal she felt wasn’t toward the hospital…but toward the world that had landed her in the hospital.
Mika spent years dancing from company to company, spreading chaos and destruction where she could. It didn’t matter to her if it was her opponent in the ring or someone she had pulled into her bed. Sex became a weapon, a means to an end. Once, she had been addicted to a man, submitting to him and letting him unleash and overpower the small voice in her head that reminded her that there was still good. It had started when she wanted to destroy his girl. She had promised that she would take everything…and she did just that. While Mika had not been the one to take the belt, she had…encouraged someone else to do it. Mika did succeed in taking her lover, her ego, and eventually, the woman’s career.
All the blood stained mats, broken bodies, manipulations…it wasn’t enough for the woman who felt as though everything she had been betrayed by anyone and everyone who stepped foot in that ring. Mika had her Devil, the man she spent years unraveling, dissecting and twisting to her own twisted pleasure. A boy from New York who had found his own path to the ring, being a Devil in character…but she made him a Devil out of the ring. Mika had encouraged his darkness, fed his twisted dreams and helped bring out the bloodlust that rested just behind his eyes. She couldn’t remember when he left but she still thought about him when she found herself in bed with a man to scratch an itch. No one had been able to fill the void her Devil had left…and for a long time, she didn’t think anyone would be able to fill it. She twisted and manipulated lovers but they would all be too weak; breaking before she could find an idea of darkness in them.
Mika sighed as she hung off the top rope of another independent company, staring at another man who thought she was weaker because of her size. She watched as he struggled to his feet, blood pouring down his face and his left arm contorted in a way that you didn’t need an x-ray to tell it was broken. Her breathing was steady as she slowly cocked her head and pushed off the ropes, walking toward him and slamming her right foot into the back of his head. It made a sick splat against the hard mat as she moved out of the ring and jumped off the apron.
It was then that she spotted a familiar face moving through the crowd. It had been years since she had laid eyes on the woman who had impacted her life. The first time since she woke up without her Devil, she felt her chest tighten like a vice on her heart. Memories of a past long before her injuries and medications ripped through her mind and she chased. Mika shoved through the crowd and tried to find the woman from her past. Their paths didn’t cross when they shared a company a couple months ago but she had fallen back into the arms of one of her former addictions.
Stepping outside, the rain pouring down like that night she broke into the hospital, Mika looked around, half wondering if she had been chasing a shadow. She had barely gotten back to her locker room where she was greeted by the sound of the Halloween theme song. A ringtone set for an old friend from her past.
“Hello?” Mika said softly, her heart racing once she saw the name on the screen.
“I have a job for you, if you want it.” A familiar voice said, proving that Mika hadn’t seen a ghost from her past.
Slowly, the image of Mika fades in, leaning closely into the camera, her raven-black hair cascading over one eye. Her pale green eyes seem distant, yet piercingly focused, as if they could see right into your soul.
"Did you miss me?" She purred, a deranged smile on her lips that seemed to match the spark in her eyes.
The scene shifts to flashes of Mika atop a building overlooking the city as thunder clapped and the rain falls, soaking the woman to the bone. Sirens echoed through the city, red and blue lights reflecting off dark and wet buildings.
"I've been called many things — a siren, a witch, a demon. The Devil’s Muse. But I am simply... Mika. A force of nature, a creature of the shadows. They tried to silence me, contain the chaos within but instead…they unleashed it. A medical experiment that was meant to cure but instead…they made it worse. They say every story has two sides. But what if I told you there were many more? Layers upon layers of truth and deceit, all intertwined. You see, the world isn't just black and white. There are grays... and then there are colors you can't even begin to imagine. Colors I can introduce you to."
A chilling laugh escapes her lips as the screen briefly goes dark, then lights up again with the flash of lighting. She looked up at the storm and sighed, letting the rain push the hair out of her face. The claps of thunder and flashes of lighting were calming to the only woman sitting in the eye of the storm.
“I've been to the darkest corners of the mind, danced on the precipice of insanity. It's a beautiful place, once you get to know it. A place where limits don't exist, where your wildest fantasies can become reality. This world, with its rules and its walls... it's all a game, a riddle waiting to be unraveled. And who better to do that than us? They tried to cage me, tame the storm within. But what they failed to realize is that chaos cannot be contained. Not by walls. Not by chains. And certainly, not by feeble minds."
She looked toward the camera, her head still rolled back and her eyes reflecting the lighting that flashed through angry black clouds. Like a child, she kicked her legs back and forth as she sat on the ledge.
"You might think you know what's real, what's safe. But with me, all bets are off. I'll show you a world where your darkest desires, your wildest dreams, are not just possible, but encouraged. Influence, Charlotte, is a powerful tool. And in my hands, it's an art form. One whisper, one glance, and I can bend reality to my will. But the question is... what will I do with you?"
Mika leaned closer to the camera, her head cocked and a smile on her face that promised pain and violence. She had no
issues with Charlotte…but she was in the business that was almost taken from Mika…She would pay just as all the others had.
“You, Charlotte, are about to enter my realm…It’s different from the world everyone else knows. Here, nothing matters. Here, you will find yourself dancing with the Devil’s Muse. I am the Reaper that you face at the start of the end, the demon who will haunt and twist every step, dream and belief you have. Everyone who steps into my ring…they face the same consequences as those who broke me so many years ago. In that ring, lies a world you've only dreamed of. A place where the lines between reality and fantasy blur, where your deepest desires can be realized... for a price."
Mika stood up, balancing carefully on the ledge of the building. She turned toward the camera and held out a hand, as if she was inviting Charlotte to come stand on the ledge with her.
“So, what do you say? Are you ready to play? To see just how deep the rabbit hole goes? To embrace the chaos, the beauty, the darkness within? Come…and lose yourself."
The lightning flashed behind the woman with the enticing smile who still stood there with her hand out toward the camera. Its flash showed a large man in a Devil’s mask standing behind her, his head cocked to the side and leaned back. A black hand reached out to the woman, fingers ghosting over her drenched hair. The screen went black for a minute before the lightning flashed overhead, revealing an empty rooftop…except for a white Devil’s mask balanced on the ledge where Mika once stood.
As she stepped out of the building, the world seemed louder, brighter, and infinitely more terrifying than she remembered. She felt like a child lost in an amusement park – every turn presenting her with a grotesque caricature of reality. Walking past an alleyway, she caught a glimpse of her reflection.
