Is this an opportunity? Isn't it funny the moment you show you don't care anymore, that's the time people want to pay attention? Honestly, it's a natural feeling. I feel relieved. I don't have to play nice or be sportsmanlike; I don't have to shake hands. I want to fight.
UPDATE.
Serenity. You haven't seen me in a while. Is everything okay?
The same usual question every time the therapist asked. Serenity sat on the white ambiguous couch inside the small office of Dr. Hofstater, a renowned therapist in Houston, Texas, and one she's been seeing since she was 16. Serenity crossed her legs and leaned back on the couch with her arms folded across her chest, playing with a piece of hair strands. Her brownish eyes looked away momentarily as the doctor proceeded to ask again.
Serenity?
"What?" Her words were poisoned with anger. She didn't want to be here, and the aggressive body demeanor in her shoulders bracing and tense clenching of her arms added to it. Dr. Hofstater kept a poised and calm response, understanding the difficulties of her client's behavior.
I'm only here to help. Tell me, did you do the assignment I gave you?
"Yes."
And?
"And what?" Serenity snapped back. The therapist, on the other hand, didn't seem phased at all. Serenity sighed, removed a book from her bag, and turned to the written notes. Her demeanor changes from aggressive to overwhelmed.
So, in your own words, Serenity, how does the concept of change relate to you?
CHANGE.
Change? I know someone else who is sharing that feeling with me. Her name is Abigail, Abigail Spencer. She and I are experiencing culture shock. When she returned to IWF, things were different, but not where she was at the time as the former IWF World Champion; oh no. That sail is gone. She's back because she wants to prove she still has it, but is stuck in the shadow of her friend, Eternity, who has won the match she wants to win three times.
How do I feel? I feel great.
Change is needed.
I like Abigail, but I don't see her ever winning that match, let alone the fatal four-way I have coming up next in IWF Sacrifice. I want to beat that woman and tell her to her face that the only murder she needs to worry about is when I stomp both my feet into her skull.
Abigail Spencer. I'm tired of you raving on about The Murders and your partner. I'm tired of hearing how you're ready to be the shining beacon of hope for the women's division when I want to beat you down to a blood pulp in hopes of becoming the 2024 Iron Maiden. Let's be honest little bitch, did you think you could come back to IWF and expect everything to be the same?
No.
I got hit with a reality check. Reality doesn't care.
Now? I have to be the one to show you that you are not the same woman you think you are. You are different from the woman who could even replicate Eternity's success as a hall of fame. You said it yourself. You were even grateful to be standing among the ranks of professional wrestlers who had earned their status to be recognized as the next hall of fame athlete in this industry.
What will happen when they watch you appear short in the main event?
You would have proven what they know about you all along. You are there for the ride. However, I'm not you. I don't sit there and be happy; I tell them to move aside and announce me as the instant hall-of-fame athlete. I make my mark known, and you're nothing more than a side character right now. You've been demoted from the top of the mountain to standing in the ring with me, and to make it worse, your demotion continues when I put my pretty little foot up your ass.
Welcome back, Abigail, and enjoy the ride, as it will be concise. Does that answer your question?
PROGRESS.
Her time in the session was aggravating her, and the therapist rolled her eyes. Serenity scooted back and kicked her legs up to the side before leaning her head on the palm of her hand. The progress was consistent despite Serenity's reluctance to participate, but the therapist had to continue being persistent in bringing out an epiphany from her client.
You know why you're here.
"Yeah. I'm here because my dead mom beat me every day, I had a drinking episode, and I have anger management. I recognized the problem, so that means I can leave now." Her sarcastic tone followed, and by rolling her eyes, didn't he, lp forgive her for her issues? Instead, the therapist continued with the questioning in her stoic manner.
Serenity. I understand our sessions have always been challenging for you, and the industry you're working in is amplifying these traits. Have you considered your environment is strengthening the challenges in your life?
FACADE.
Oh please, you knew the type of environment I'd be in. Professional wrestling and mixed martial arts. Sounds familiar, Caroline? That's what you've been involved in since you were a young girl. You even started training at the same time as I did at 16 years old; from there, your story has been interesting. You're a former IWF Women's World Champion who defeated Shelly Diamond before but spare me this act. You're the lovely girl from prep school. We see right through it, especially over your daily episodes with RAM.
Caroline. I'm happy you're excited and willing to scream HI!!! Every time you wake up in the morning, seeing how it is Iron Maiden season, as you said before, I hope you understand what it means for you. I've been in the worst environments, and I thrive in them. I hope to face you in the ring so I may bestow your advice from one former World Champion to another.
My time here in IWF hasn't been all rainbows and hugs. I've been humiliated by nice women such as you who pretend to shake my hand and then laugh behind my back. The truth is, Caroline is that you can drop the excellent girl act because it's nothing more than a cheap way of sucking up to everyone. You've been gone for how long, and now you've come back pretending everything is okay when you've stepped foot into the room with a woman who doesn't care about anything anymore.
Caroline. You're nothing more than a target. I want you in that fatal-four-way main event. I want to sacrifice you and get rid of that plastic smile. You're not Regina George or Blair Waldorf. You're Caroline Machado, the former IWF Women's World Champion who lost to Serenity Holmes after she kicked your little white smile down your throat.
The next time you'll be saying HI! is when you're in critical care, holding on for dear life with your little family from Brazil gathered around you, hoping to decide you'll survive another day. You don't mean anything. You don't matter anymore. I do. I've established that I declare war on the entire women's division.
With that said, you can kiss my ass because you are the fakest piece of shit in this match.
But welcome back.
REALIZATION.
Interesting.
The scribbling of the notes made Serenity's right eye twitch. That's all she could say? Serenity poured out her feelings, and they were taken as notes for this fancy therapist to use to get paid. It's another reason she hated showing up for the sessions. Serenity had to sit there and listen to the pen scribble in the doctor's terrible penmanship, and she closed her eyes to deal with her anger boiling. Her lip quivered before she bit it. She looked through the window to see the view of the city and always wondered how these therapists could afford these luxurious offices.
Serenity?
Serenity's attention returned to the therapist.
Our session is almost up. There's one more thing I want to talk to you about.
"Of course." She mumbled under her breath. The therapist smiled, knowing the next question could trigger an emotional response.
What about family? What does that mean to you?
FAMILY.
Maddox. The last name carries weight. It's funny to meet other household names and compare their similarities. People hate second-generational talents like myself because of the entitlement to April Maddox. Holy shit. Legimitately hanging off the outskirts of her sister, man, I can say I'm riding the co-tails of my father, but the difference is that I branched out and accomplished things on my own.
Maddox, April in this case, agrees that the women's division has become soft. Honestly, I don't blame her, but seeing that she's been underperforming recently has made me ask, what is her purpose in IWF other than being the other Maddox?
I bet she hates being asked that always, hence why the Iron Maiden is so important to her. However, she doesn't have what it takes to separate herself from her last name without having to do so legally. In this industry, you need to understand what separates you from everyone else and find that one thing that makes you a name of your own. April still needs to do that, though her motivation to become the Iron Maiden has been evident from the get-get-go. It's about The Murder. It's about that stupid stable of women trying to put a chokehold on this business and think they are the judge, jury, and executioner of the women's division.
That's me.
I'm the future of this division., April Maddox can return to the developmental stage where she will be suckling under the blossom of her family to stay relevant in this business. I honestly feel bad for her, for I understand where she's coming from, but she's been surrounded by people who are better than her and couldn't understand what is happening.
They say you are defined by the company you keep.
April. You're in the best company. You're in IWF. Your family holds a name here, yet you're just collecting scraps of crumbs off their table. The fatal four-way? I know your sister will be there to support you, so I'm going to be the person to make you quit. Hey Brooklyn, don't blame her when your family fails again; after all, it should be a reflection of her leader, correct?
RESCHEDULE.
Thank you.
Once again, the scribbling on the notepad made Serenity roll her eyes. That was it? She never understood how these things worked but wasn't the professional or specialist in this case. Serenity rocked back and forth, waiting for the clock to strike twelve so she could pack up and return to training. She loved being back in Houston to spend time with her family, but recently, things with her career have been lacking, especially in IWF, causing her emotions to become unstable. To make matters worse, the relationship between her and her father has struggled recently due to her commotion.
We'll follow up again next week.
"Next week?" She snapped instantly. Serenity sat upright and leaned forward, confused. "I can't do next week. I have a lot of things to prepare for. Can't we push it back to two weeks?"
No.
"WHY?!" Her outburst caused the therapist to raise an eyebrow and slumped back on the couch, defeated.
Serenity. I won't allow you to continue missing sessions or rudely blow off my secretary. I've followed you on social media and also watched you on television. I'm seeing clear signs you need to follow my instructions or take the time to work on yourself, and it starts with her.
Serenity immediately stood up and went for the door before slamming it shut behind her. The rest of the office staff watched her storm out, and the therapist stepped outside, confirming her appointment for next week.
