Pax stepped out of Dr. Kingsley’s office, letting out a heavy sigh as he did so. He knew that he was medically fit to compete. Hell, he had managed to keep himself mostly on schedule with his training while he was working on the film. But that didn’t change the fact that everytime he had to go ahead for a physical to ensure he was cleared to compete wasn’t a nightmare. Especially now, when he was so intent on proving everyone, especially himself, wrong. But he was cleared. So nothing to worry about there. He rolled his shoulders and started making his way to the locker room when someone clears their throat behind him.
“Mr. Revoir, a moment of your time.”
Hearing his actual name caused him to tense up and he felt a small pang in between his shoulder blades. So frequently people were content to use his ring name that he wasn’t used to hearing it at work. He slowly turned around to see Dr. Shannon McGinnis standing in the doorway.
“Oh, uh. Hello Dr. McGinnis. How can I help?”
“I thought you could step into my office so that we could talk.”
He froze for a moment, his mind racing before he forced a smile on his face.
“Oh. No that’s ok Dr. McGinnis. I’m doing just fine.”
She looked at him for a long moment and Pax fought to keep from fidgeting under her gaze.
“Part of my job is determining just that. Please, step inside. I promise it won’t take very long at all.”
“I appreciate the offer Doc, but really I’m doing just fine.”
He turned to walk away before she spoke up again.
“I am afraid I must insist. I hope I don’t have to remind you that Dr. Kingsley is not the only one who can determine a competitor's fitness to return.”
He pulled up short at her words, a jumble of emotions filling his mind for a moment before he let out a breath and turned around.
“Well, I suppose if you insist I can make some time.”
“Thank you. I appreciate your forbearance.”
She stepped to one side and swept an arm to one side to beckon him into her office and Pax woodenly walked forward and into the room. Like so many other office areas, it was a repurposed room that the arena had set aside for them. But there was a desk and a chair, though not the lounge that Pax had expected. Though he supposed that was just a bit in movies and cartoons. She stepped in after he had entered the room and closed the door.
“Please take a seat, Pax. Is it alright if I call you that?”
“Ya, sure. That’s fine. Prefer it actually.” He stepped deeper into the room and took a seat in the chair. “So, what did you want to talk about?”
She took the chair from behind her desk and moved it around to the front before she took a seat facing him.
“Well, I wanted to talk about you.” She crossed her ankles and sat up in the chair. “I have been reviewing some of the work that you have submitted to the company and I have to admit that I have some concerns.”
He frowned slightly and shifted in his seat. “What do ya mean? What kind of concerns?” The way she looked at him made him uncomfortable. Hell, the chair was uncomfortable.
“Well, to be blunt Pax, you have spoken a great deal about some of the emotional and mental struggles you have been facing. As you likely know, it is my job to see to the emotional and mental well being of all of the competitors that we employ. This is not an easy career path, and it is perfectly normal to have struggles in those areas, but I wanted to check in with you and see if there is anything I can do for you.”
Pax lifted a hand and wiped it over his face. “Look Doc, I appreciate it. But I’m working on it on my own time.” Stuff like this was usually handled in the family. But of course with the drama in his family he didn’t really have anyone to speak out to. Hell they barely talked to them.
She frowned slightly and he felt her eyes staring into him. “You speak rather frankly about your issues, Pax. That’s good. It’s something that I approve of. But you should equally be willing to talk about them with a professional.” She sighed and stood up and walked around her desk and opened her laptop. “I am going to send you an email with some referrals. I want you to try and reach out to schedule an appointment. If you can find someone more comfortable for you, that works too. But I really do think you could benefit from talking with someone.”
Pax sighed softly. “Is that something I gotta do to get cleared?”
She lifted her head and smirked at him. “Please, you’d have to make a bigger deal then you have been for me to do anything like that. I never said I was in a position to do that for you.”
He gaped at her for a moment. “Isn’t that abuse of privileges or something?”
“Oh hush. Just try and arrange an appointment. I think it will be good for you. Also maybe try and open up more to your co-workers. You look terribly lonely sitting all by yourself.”
Pax shifted in his seat slightly. “I mean… I may be doing that already.” His heart beat faster in his chest as his hand moved on it’s own to his phone for a moment before he shook his head. “But I’ve burned too many people.”
“You might be surprised.” She smiled at him. “Just try to come out of your shell.”
He stared at her for a moment before he snorted out a laugh that he was unable to contain. “Doc, you have no idea how funny that is.”
