The low, hazy clouds blocked out any semblance of sunlight as Kasey stared out of the floor to ceiling window in Eddy’s office. She had gotten there ahead of him, in preparation for the meeting he had called her to. The door swung open behind her and she turned to see her brother stroll in, phone at his ear and a triumphant smile on his face.
“Yes, of course. You’ve been watching her progress, haven’t you? Two extremely decisive victories in two weeks!” He paused for a moment, flashing a cheesy thumbs-up to Kasey as he walked around his desk and dropped into the leather chair. “Well, they may have only been ‘enhancement talent’, but it’s about sending the message, isn’t it? We’re making waves in this company, and it’s only a matter of time before we are at the peak of the mountain.”
As Eddy continued on with his call, Kasey walked around to the front of the desk and dropped down into one of the chairs facing it. She fiddled with her fingers in her lap before her pocket buzzed. She slid her phone out to see that she had a new text message. She didn’t recognize the number, but something compelled her to click the message to open it. It was a photograph of two young children, one a girl no older than four years old with a gap-toothed grin and sandy brown hair tousled by wind. The other child was a boy, around two years old with the same brown hair. They were both standing along the shoreline of a beach, the young girl gently gripping the boys’ hand as they dipped their toes in the water. Accompanying the photo was a short, simple message:
Found you.
Kasey felt a chill go down her spine as she stared at the photo. The location was one she knew - it was the same beach in Ibiza where she first met up with Eddy last year. But more than that, she had an overwhelming sense of familiarity. She remembered this scene. She remembered the smell of the ocean. She remembered the feel of the little boy’s hand in hers, though she didn’t remember their connection. It all felt like a dream just after waking, everything slipping through her fingers even as she tried to remember…
“Something else got your attention?”
She snapped her phone down into her lap and stared up at Eddy, who was giving her a raised-eyebrow look from across his desk. She shook her head. “No, sorry. Just a message from Shawn.” She reached down to put her phone in her bag and did her best to focus on the meeting, but her mind kept wandering back to the message.
She knew the little boy in the photo wasn’t Eddy. He was a year older than her. And who had sent it to her? She had thought the drama and intrigue was behind her once Eddy had revealed himself, but it seemed that there were far more skeletons in this closet than she thought…

“Well, I hope we’ve got your attention now.”
The same dark room, the same high-backed leather chair. It was becoming a familiar sight to the IWF fans, but this time the chair was empty. Soon, however, the sound of footsteps could be heard echoing in the room, and before long Edwyn Merrick stepped into the frame. Dressed - as always - in an impeccably tailored suit, he flashed his somewhat sinister smirk towards the camera as he stood beside the chair and propped up one elbow on it, lacing his fingers together.
“Two weeks, two wins. Both in quite decisive fashion, as well. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as watching someone struggle so vainly against the inevitable, only to watch the fighting spirit completely drain from their body as they slap their hand on the mat.” He closed his eyes, seemingly reliving the moments. “It’s times like this that I miss being in the ring, but alas, my time has passed.” His eyes flashed open, glinting even in the dim light. “But now, I have a new goal. To guide Kasey Vex to new heights, to help her become the new face of this industry. I’d say we’re off to a fairly good start, aren’t we?”
The smirk on his face grew as he moved to sit down in the chair, bringing one leg up to cross over the other and lacing his fingers together under his chin. “And come this Tuesday night, we continue to dominate. One thing that can be said for my sister - once she sets her mind to a task, there is no force on this earth that will stop her from achieving her end goal. Unfortunately for the rest of you, that goal just happens to be rising up the ranks of the IWF until she sits atop the mountain’s peak.”
As Eddy’s words trailed off, the white fox skull mask seemed to materialize out of thin air much like it had before as Kasey Vex sauntered into the frame, her slender figure covered by an oversized black denim jacket layered overtop of a cropped black tank top that showed off the multitude of tattoos that decorate her skin. She slid her hands into the pockets of her black skinny jeans as she leaned against the chair. “‘I keep climbing and clawing, this shit is so exhausting’,” she sang, plucking lyrics from a PVRIS song. “There’s only so many times that I can force all these poor, pathetic creatures to tap before it starts becoming a little…stale.” A long, exaggerated sigh that blew back a strand of cotton candy pink hair that had fallen over her forehead. “I came to the IWF for competition. For a challenge. And while Amber certainly put up a fight, Nancy was less than impressive for a supposed ‘legend’.”
A roll of her dark eyes visible through the eyeholes of her mask. “And if I can be truly honest, I am not holding out much hope for this upcoming match. Mimi Simpson.” She snorted derisively. “Another of these starry-eyed rookies who think they’re going to make their name off of me? I did not come to this company to be some stepping stone. I came to be the crushing weight of defeat for anyone who dares to rise against me. The inevitable force of nature that chews up and spits out those who think they can stop my path.”
Her voice lowered to a dangerous whisper, edged with a harsh snarl as she leaned in close to the camera. “Mimi, I want you to listen carefully to me. If you value your career and want it to be long and fruitful…you’ll stay in the back. Because if you do decide to make the foolish decision to skip down that ramp at Sacrifice and face me…you will regret it. I can promise you that.”
With a final sneer into the camera, Kasey reached out and covered the lens with her hand, shrouding the scene in black and ending the broadcast abruptly.
