“Do you have no shame? You keep this up and all that will be left of you is a funeral where no one comes, stupid girl. Why can’t you be like Megan? Why do you even still have a job I don’t even know.”
She’d almost deleted the number and blocked it for that one, but as she looked over the Roman landscape, with its history, the sun, the people and somewhat reassuringly the traffic, she remained content with leaving the phone on her bed along with what was now a ‘You suck, Love Mom’ Litany.
Her mind settled on the upcoming match-up on the war that was in theory supposed to settle all this, mark out just who was better, She just breathed good to know the others had her back. Her phone beeped again and she covered her head with both hands and a sigh as she sank to her knees on the balcony and muttered to herself.
“Ohfuckoooooooofff!”
Charlie’s voice would respond with uncertainty.

Charlie’s voice would respond with uncertainty.
“Uh, ok, do you not wanna go out to eat today?”
Nat looked up at Charlie and blinked, how long had she been there?
“Oh, right, sorry. Yah , I can do food, sorry.”
“Oh, right, sorry. Yah , I can do food, sorry.”
Charlie crossed her arms and her tone was that familiar skeptical one, tainting each word with slight humour as well.
"So something has happened?"
Nat took a moment and sighed, she gestured to the Phone.
“I’m just...Popular right now”
The sarcasm was heavy, Charlie gave the logical answer to help her friend feel better.
"Tell 'em to talk to Hannah. Most press take being referred towards a manager pretty well... The ones that don't are assholes not worth your time."
A chuckle erupted from Nat as her phone once more buzzed again and she closed her eyes. Charlie’s brows Raised as her impatience grew, her tone not quite terse but well she wasn’t psychic.

"You gonna make me keep guessin', Nat?"
Nat let loose a tired, resigned sigh and just let the word loose like a weight was coming off her chest.

“Family”
The measured breath that came out of Charlie was a quiet, desperate little sigh.

"So....... Guessin' this is a sitch like Rini's parents then?"
Nat just gave a sad smile, nodding in confirmation.
“I'm the ‘disappointment’."
Charlie’s left eyebrow just about shot into orbit as she blinked in disbelief.
"Wait... you're the disappointment... The fuck does your sib do? Do they run the Navy Hospital at Bethesda?"
Nat felt her shoulders rise and fall in a dismissive shrug even as she answered the question.

"It wouldn’t matter –what- she did I’ve been the disappointment since Dad sauntered out”
Charlie goes rigid for a long moment, taking long inhales through her nose that hissed out between her clenched teeth and Nat waved a hand trying to dismiss the issue.
"It's no big but I nearly yote my phone into Rome traffic. Let’s get something to eat yeah? Take the damn phone I’d rather cheer up some."
Charlie smiled brightly, taking the phone to stuff into her pocket.
"Well it's a good thing we're gonna go see Rini. Hope you're wearing good shoes. I'm sure she's already found a local shopping area to haul you through..."
Nat laughs a bit and wiped at her eyes to straighten herself up and get closer
“Thanks Charlie.”
They link arms and go spend some quality time; after all, the Night of Immortals was approaching and the time for niceties was dimming.

“Y’know I agonised a little on how to make this dramatic, if I even should, it is after all Night of the Immortals, the showcase of showcases. We’re in Rome. I have my pick of Seven hills, the Vatican, all that stuff. Listening to Hannah pick out perfect location after perfect location, the Romulus and Remus story..”
We fade in on Nat at the top of the Stadio Olimpico, looking down on the barely constructed ring and area a skeleton of the grandeur to come.
“Why dance around it? This is where it’s goin down, Birds of Prey Versus Murder, and how all this started. The goal on my end anyway was to throw up and glow up, you know? Give the Murder exactly what they wanted, a division that would fight back.”
She stared down as the working crews, her form covered in a work out hoodie , hood up as she rested her chin on a metal scaffold bar.
“None of this was supposed to be personal, yet here we are, After all, one of y’all got the jitters, got up in my face, going around the long way of accusing me of something it’s not in my nature to do, I don’t even know Rowan, Astrid of Vivienne. Hell, if I wanted to face them I’d draw a line in the sand and call ‘m out because I wanna test myself.”

She shook her head and sighed, lips pursing as she rubbed under her nose.
“You got a bullseye pointed at your culprit, and you decide what? We’re inconvenient? We’re a danger? Why jump us? I mean you did a number on me, on us even.”
She clicked her tongue against her teeth and sighed eyes scanning the environs.
“Y’know what that tells me about the big bad murder? About the ‘guiding light’ of the Women’s division? It tells me you’re fulla shit and nothing more than common, garden-variety bullies who just get their kicks pushing folk around.”
A little smirk and a sly smile.
“That being said ya’ll need to be taken down a peg or two, actually scratch that two of you do. The other two really need to ditch your respective mentors and spread your wings proper, in my opinion or hell find another mentor, and yeah I’m talkin’’ to you April, Mai? Stop drinking that Centralia-tainted kool aid yeah? Place is gone, Pack is over, half the members are dead, retired or currently sat in a hospital bed in what some might call a deserved dose of karma.”
A pause and she shook her head, her face softening as she leant her chin on her hands and reconsidered her words.
“No….I take that back, nobody deserves that, sorry.”
She sniffled a bit and she rubbed at her nose and nodded before she casts a glance at the camera with a sly smile.
“But y'all are big guns, so I gotta treat you like that. Two of you might not be hall of famers, or on their way but that doesn’t mean anything, does it? You're all dangerous, you’ve proved that. So come night of the immortals, be you Vivienne Rogers, Brooklyn or April Madrox, or even Mai Everstone; we’re gonna beat the hell out of each other.”
She nodded a bit with a wry sigh looking away from the camera as she tapped rhythmically on the scaffold bar.
“This is about vindication for me, maybe less so than my friends. You -made- this personal. I thought I had proved myself with the Maiden but nooooooooo, I gotta prove it to the Murder too.”
She straightens herself up and sets her jaw with a small growl.
“It’s also about Justice. For you and yours, you think you aren’t being given your respect, right? Come earn it, I know for a fact you didn’t give us any, still aren’t. So we’re gonna extract it outta you. Piece by piece, if I gotta. I’m owed my pound for flesh for you jumping my ass for whatever bullshit reason you’ll throw out.”
Her voice grew a little frustrated, tapping a small rhythm.
“And it -will- be a bullshit reason. You can’t even look me in the face and say why I bet. You wanted a match? Ask for one but you forced it, with your twisted Javert crap and now? You’re going to end up like so many broadways.”
She makes a high to low whistle as she mimics something falling making a splash sound as the whistle briefly utters out a few bars of ‘One Day More’ from Les Miserablés and she shakes her head.
“That is… Such a specific reference, sorry, but the point stands. Karma’s creeping up on you and it’s shaped like Birds Of Prey. No force on this planet is gonna make that not so. As good as you all are, y’all carry a secret doubt.”
She looked towards the camera with a hard stare that serene little smile on her face.
“Come Night of the Immortals, We Will expose it. Hell or high water.”
She caps a salute to the camera with one hand and nods.
“Take flight, little birds.”
