Heir and Heiress to the Throne 2024
I am delighted to announce that from 2024 the Heir and Heiress to the Throne tournaments will return to their original schedule and run simultaneously – concluding at Legacy. Competitors will compete for the right to face the IWF Men’s and Women’s World Champion as the Heir and Heiress to the Throne, joining many of the promotion’s biggest names in the annals of our history as winners of this prestigious annual tournament.
This year’s tournament will be split into two phases as IWF’s two divisions compete to earn their right to compete for the IWF World Championships. The first phase – Uneasy Alliance – will require competitors to work together to gain as advantageous a position as possible in the second phase. This next phase – Uncivil War – will be a brutal and ruthless war to the finals as the competitors fight to eliminate their opponents and claim the title of Heir and Heiress to the Throne for themselves.
Uneasy Alliance
Competitors will be placed in a mixed tag team where they must work together to gain the most favourable position they can secure for the second phase of the tournament.
Every participant will continue to the second phase of the tournament (barring injury/suspension etc where a surrogate will take their place) but the paths they will be forced to take to the finals will be determined by their overall performance during this first phase.
Teams are selected at random and placed into two groups of four where they will face off in a round robin format (a competition format in which each contestant meets every other participant once).
Teams will be awarded 3 points for a victory, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a defeat. Teams who are tied level on points after each match in the group has been contested will compete in a winner takes all play-off to determine their final positions at IWF Presents: Rising Suns on 30th June 2024.
The teams in this years tournament are as follows:
Group A
Vivienne Rodgers & Cyrus Daniels
Rini Ishikawa & Masao Akiyama
April Madrox & Dean Harper
Kasey Vex & Nick Knight
Group B
Charlotte Shimizu & Pax Stormcrow
Black Widow & Madjinn
Abigail & Tytus Rost
Natasha Walker & Allen Chaney
Uncivil War
Throughout history, the margins between success and failure could be defined by a contender’s proximity to the throne. Those who were stationed further away from the centres of power often lost more than just their claims to the throne, this year IWF will have its very own bloody succession – the Uncivil War. This phase will be a traditional knock out format – determined by the positions teams finished in during the Uneasy Alliance phase.
Competitors who finished in the bottom two of their groups will enter the first elimination round with 3rd in Group A facing 4th in Group B and 3rd in Group B facing 4th in Group A. The winners of these matches will then enter the quarter finals where they will face the competitors who finished 2nd in their groups. The winners in this round will then advance to the semi-finals where they will face the two opponents who finished first to determine who will advance to the finals at IWF Presents: Lineage on 28th July 2024.
The winners will then compete for the IWF Men’s and Women’s World Championships live at the Tokyo Dome on 25th August 2024 at IWF Presents: Legacy XII.
Fed and Title Hierarchy
The intended purpose of the Gladiators division and Coliseum is to allow people to develop characters with less pressure (hence the smaller word limits) and for new characters/handlers to establish themselves with in the fed. It is not designed as a slight against you if you’ve arrived from somewhere else and enjoyed a lot of success, but rather it is a framework to allow staged progression from the beginning of your time here through to hopefully your entry to the main event.
Character’s will progress through the card in proportion to their individual development – those who come in and demonstrate they’re well versed with their character and showcase their ability can easily move through the card more swiftly. You will not be forced to stay in tiers you’re clearly ready to graduate from to ensure you’re competing with characters of a similar skill level, as you demonstrate where you’re at in terms of your development you will progress accordingly.
The IWF World Television Championship will now be known as the IWF Gladiators Championship and will provide opportunities to new characters at the beginning of their journey’s in IWF and a place for those looking to work on their gimmicks to have opportunities for success. This will be designed to provide a platform for handlers to develop their character’s organically through the various stages of the roster as they hopefully grow towards the main event. I feel it is crucial for character’s to be afforded opportunities to succeed and develop by learning to carry belts through the process of their careers – not just at the top end. I recognise (from personal experience) that it is important to have achievable pathways for success from the beginning of your journey through to the peak – it also provides opportunities for feuds at all ends of the card.
Joining the Gladiator’s will be a new championship exclusively for women called the IWF Gladiatrix Championship – providing a similar pathway for character’s making their journey towards the main roster’s women’s division. I appreciate that it would be somewhat counterproductive to provide a developmental journey for the men’s division whilst neglecting out thriving women’s division – which has always been a source of pride for IWF. Specific details will be forthcoming.
IWF’s existing title hierarchy pathway may therefore be considered along similar lines as Olympic medals:
Gold: IWF Men’s and Women’s World Championship
Silver: IWF Invictus Championship and IWF World Tag Team Championship
Bronze: IWF Gladiators and Gladiatrix Championship
It is important that we touch briefly on IWF’s “gendered divisions” as the current structure stands as I appreciate that we pride ourselves on being an inclusive fed. I want to make it clear that characters are free to compete in the divisions they identify as – this means you’re more than welcome to run trans characters, but it also includes non-binary characters as well. Non-binary characters are essentially eligible to compete in whichever division you choose or could – in theory – compete in both.
Within the structure of our existing title hierarchy, you will notice that the “Gold” and “Bronze” tiers are divided by gender, whilst the silver is “unrestricted.” Hopefully this will provide a satisfactory compromise between our more “sports based” presentation style and people’s recognised desire to also be eligible to compete in an unrestricted setting as well. As always, IWF is under constant evolution but I hope this provides some helpful guidance on where we stand currently.
