The camera zooms in on Black Widow perched on the brink of a rooftop, her legs swinging idly as she takes a drag from a cigarette.
"This week it was supposed to have been me taking on Kasey Vex, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't waiting for that moment. The minute this tournament field was filled out, that was the name I circled. That was the match I wanted. There were no guarantees, but I believed it to be just a matter of fucking time until we got to play together." A pause ensues, giving the Black Widow the chance to take another drag from her cigarette.
"The fox is special. She has an aura. There are no false pretenses. The fox came, and she didn't try to make friends with the hens in the house. The fox did what a predator is supposed to do: she feasted. Slowly, she drained the fight from their eyes, and then she went for their throat."
"I admire that." The Black Widow flashes a chilling smile. "It is so rare that you find someone completely willing to show you who they truly are, especially in this business. We're all just here to cut each other's fucking throats anyway, aren't we? The only differences between us are the reasons we claim for doing it. Some of you have to feel noble. Others crave to be wanted."
"But not the fox."
"The fox was pure. Her only weakness was the broken down, rusted pile of bones and scar tissue they saddled her with for a partner. A man too proud to see the world has already left him behind. A man my Mad Prince will mercifully put out of his misery once and for all, so he can finish out his days in comic bookstores, signing autographs for ungrateful neckbeards."
"Forced to carry that type of weight, the fox faltered. The fox broke. It was to be expected. Predators aren't built to coddle or carry. We're made to hunt. Unfortunately, that means I won't get to play with the fox though. As glorious as the carnage could have been, it is what it is. Whatever." Offering up a half shrug, the Black Widow seems to brush off her disappointment.
"But who stands in the fox's place?"
The question hangs in the air while the Black Widow seizes another moment to draw on her cigarette. She exhales, sending a cloud of smoke into the air that veils her face. "Serenity fucking Holmes, of course. The chosen one. The woman with two faces and nothing but false pretenses."
"Tell me though, Serenity, how is it you think you ended up in this position?"
"Roberto has taken a liking to you. It could be this was all set up for you to win this tournament. You're walking in fresh, while I was part of a tag match last week against April Madrox and Dean Harper. As much as I fucking enjoyed bleeding with Dean, I still bled. I still bruised. My body hurts. Advantage, you."
She elicits a slight chuckle. "And why wouldn't the largest wrestling promotion in the world want you to have an advantage? You're young. You're talented. You have swagger and a pretty face. You print money, Serenity. You're the perfect tool. And just as much as the Invictus Championship... this... this could mark your arrival."
"How much do you really understand this business though?"
The Black Widow takes a final drag from her cigarette before flicking it into the night. "Have you ever stopped to ask yourself if everything really is as it seems? Roberto is a businessman, after all. Everything you've been given; it is all an investment. Investments need to earn, or they cease being useful."
"Indulge me. How useful do you suppose you were when you were given a main event stage alongside Hathaway, and the two of you fell to Billie Parris and Nancy Pailson-Carlson in front of millions? That couldn't have been Roberto's proudest moment. When you signed your deal, you became a reflection of him. Your embarrassments are his embarrassments."
"What if, unbeknownst to you, he decided then that your usefulness had expired. This whole charade of putting you in the tournament may be nothing more than a convenient way to be rid of you. I may have even already have made a deal with him that you don't know about to do just that. You are getting the most violent, unhinged woman in this entire tournament as a welcome. I'm the only girl in this tournament that has openly said I don't give a fuck about it. I'm here for the pain, Serenity, rather I give it, or receive it. For all you know, I could have asked for Dean Harper and April Madrox last weekend, and already received my payment in full in this arrangement."
"Or I could just be fucking with your head." She offers another half shrug. "Ask Roberto, if you're not sure. Or don't. Whatever. Either way, you know as well as I do, the answer will be the same."
"Deal or no deal, it doesn't change what I'm planning to do to you, Serenity. I've sat back, listening to your obnoxious mouth as you've grown fat on your accomplishments. Now that you're nice and swollen, I'm going to bleed you dry. I'm going to carve lines down both sides of your face so, when they put you on fucking posters, there isn't a good side! I'm going to take the one thing I know drives you, Serenity. Not your place in this tournament. Not your golden trinket. I'm going to cripple your ego, so you'll see you're shit, just like me."
The Black Widow expectorates before launching it into the night sky. "Serenity, then we'll see how much peace you can find."
