Fault.
How does one gauge responsibility?. The way the world works with the court system is a farce. You get lung cancer, blame the tobacco companies. You get liver disease, blame old Jack Daniels. You get fat, blame McDonalds. No one takes responsibility for their own actions anymore.
So that's why a family blames me.
A cowardly act.
Just like suicide. People take their own lives and some people marvel at the "guts" it takes to end it. Bullshit. It's a cowards way out to believe a life needs to end because you are to afraid to just face the mess you led yourself to.
She turned her back on her family and her faith.
But now they say I'm at fault.
That I'm a big bad evil man who made an innocent girl "opt out".
If they only knew what I was. If they only had a name for what I am. Every other type of human and mental disease they have a fancy word and description for. But not me. I'm an enigma, I'm unique. They have no idea how to deal with me, talk to me.
No matter how hard they try.
The room was grey. Emotionless. Not dark, not light and engrossing. Just grey and neutral. Nero sat alone staring across a grey table, his hands cuffed together and his hair tied back. A one way mirror across the room let's Nero study himself. The door opens and Nero slowly turns his head. A tall skinny man with dark brown hair enters the room. A typical suit. He seems to carry himself with a certain arrogance as he lightly places a manilla file on the desk. He undoes the button on his jacket and sits down putting his glasses on as he opens the file.
"Nero Blake. Age 25......or is it Nathan Blake?....."
Nero slowly smiles and puts his hands on the desk, his deep blue eyes staring a hole right through the man sitting across from him. Nero studies him and sits back.
"And you are?"
Nero's voice is filled with confidence.
"Detective Sam Donahue....."
The detective seems to have just as much confidence as Nero, staring deep into Nero trying to catch him off guard.
"Do you know why you're here Nero?. Why you were picked up?."
"Because people need someone to blame?"
The detective laughs and pulls a picture from the file. A picture of Rebecca Nichols. He slides it over in front of Nero to gauge his reaction, Nero looks down his eyes flicker as he stares at it and swallows deep.
"Ahh a interesting reaction. Is that one of regret I see?"
Nero looks up and slides the picture back looking away.
"Regret?. No. Love...."
The detective stands up and walks around the table slowly getting behind Nero leaning in close.
"Love?.....you loved this girl?. Is that why you pushed away her friends? Her family?. Why you broke down her self esteem and made her feel like nothing?....why you made her feel the need to end her life?......"
Nero tilts his head and sighs.
"Made her?. So I'm to blame for someone making a choice?....."
The detective closes the file and sits back.
"Why don't you tell me what happened that day?"
"You have the file, the statements......"
The detective shakes his head and laughs.
"I need to hear it from you....."
Nero raises his eyebrows and nods
Wednesday 24th November 2012.
Becca sat at the kitchen table tears rolling down her cheeks. Nero stood away from her, his arms folded.
"Why are you doing this Nathan?"
Nero shook his head.
"This is who I am Bec...."
The answer was cold, to the point.
"No it isn't. You're a sweet guy, you made me happy. Made me feel whole...."
Nero didn't move, his expression didn't change. Two bags were packed and sat near the door.
"It was a lie Bec. You'll be better off without me."
She got up and ran to him wrapping her arms around his neck pulling him into a kiss. There was nothing back. Rebecca stopped and slowly pulled away, tears falling even faster as she realised through the kiss that Nero was telling the truth.
"Oh god......you son of a bitch....."
She lashes out hitting Nero over and over in the chest, Nero just stood back and took it until grabbing her wrists.
"Enough......I have to go......"
Nero breezed past Becca as she cried and let out wimpers of pain and sadness, he picked up his bags and walked out the door leaving Becca sliding down a wall to the floor, her knees pulled to her chest.
"And that...detective...is the last time I saw her."
Nero was still cold, his eyes staring through the Detective.
"You just left her there like that?"
Nero slowly smiles and shook his head.
"Yeah, I was gone. She killed herself four days after that detective. Plenty of time for someone, anyone to step in. This family, these friends who care about her so much and want to come after me and blame me where no where to be found."
"Maybe...but maybe we have enough evidence to hold you while we dig a little deep-"
"No...."
Nero leans forward and laughs clasping his hands together.
"Here's what's going to happen Detective, there's going to be a knock at that door, you will be called out and told by a very dapper looking man in an exceptionally cut suit that you have no grounds to hold me. He will then tell you that all charges have been dropped, and that any liability does not lay with me towards the death of Ms Nichols......and then you will come in here you will undo my cuffs and give me my personal effects before apologising to me and telling me this was all a mistake...."
Nero laughs to himself and sits back as the detective stares at Nero looking him up and down, the tension builds slowly and then a knock is heard, the detective looks at the door then back at Nero who smirks and winks.
"You should probably get that....."
"Did you all miss me?"
"While I was a guest of law enforcement?"
"While I was wrongly accused?"
"I'm sure you did"
Nero stands a figure of confidence. His long platinum blonde hair flowing down the side of his face with a boyish grin.
"Well right back on the horse it seems. I've been out for 24 hours and I get booked into a fourway. Am I surprised?. No of course not. The last few months I have become somewhat of a boogyman. A mystery to be solved and hated. Much like one of my opponents. That masked man known as Redemption."
"Now a few weeks ago, I told the world I didn't care who was under the mask. And for the most part I was telling the truth but since then, the things you've said and done, well at the risk of copying a recent film I guess I should say that you had my curiosity, now you have my attention. Now I wonder just who is under that mask?. Who has so much confidence that they considered it a sin?"
"That was your sin was it not?. The fact you are so arrogant you believe yourself to be right no matter what?."
Nero raises his eyebrows and shrugs.
"That's the sin you feel the need to hide from?. To wear this mask and hide away?. Whoever is under that mask deserves to be seen. To be heard. Because in the end you only have your name and who you are...release it show us all the man behind the mask and solve the mystery....."
"Or maybe this week....I'll yank that mask off..."
"And solve it for you..."
"But he's not the only man to be a masked wonder. We also have the former japanese superstar shamed into hiding his face and just giving up everything he is and was. All because he grew a heart and couldn't bare to look himself in the mirror. So basically through all your noble talk about honor and redemption you happen to be a giant coward running from his past."
"You make me sick."
Nero spits his words like venom.
"You and your cowardly lion of a partner were trained by my brother and his "life partner" Kyle Braddock. So we have somewhat of a connection, and that to makes me sick. I wear no mask I fear no one. You don't fear anyone else Gjenrei so don't get what I say twisted. But you do fear one thing. The reflection. The man in the mirror. You are terrified of being who you are. It's a shame because from what I understand you were a man prepared to do anything to win...."
"That I can understand..."
"That I can respect."
"Not the coward afraid to be in his own skin....."
Nero slowly grins.
"But that all pale's in comparison to the boy wonder. The joke that no one finds funny, Jayson Matthews. Well kid here you are against two masked cowards and myself. One of the best young up and comers in this company. See the last few months I find myself focused of all of this. I find myself ready to become a legend in this so I'll always be remembered...."
"For better of worse."
"I wil be held in higher esteem than my brother ever thought possible. And you will be just another stepping stone.....just another name.....it's all you're good for Jayson...and all you were every meant to be"
