Charlotte, Nat, and Rini had left the house to go and train for their upcoming match. This suited Pax just fine, since it meant he got the room he shared with Charlotte to himself. The afternoon light filtered into the room, painting the bed and floor with sunlight.
He sprawled on the bed, dressed in a pair of sweatpants, with his phone held in front of him as he watched the competitors in Paris compete. This was always a weird time for him. Watching some of the best wrestlers in the world competing on the national stage. The biggest event of their sport. His childhood dream, and one that he nearly fulfilled. A sigh escaped his body as he slumped even further into the bed.
It would have been his second year to compete. It didn’t help that yesterday Amit Elor made history as the youngest competitor to win gold in wrestling. An opportunity he could have had in Tokyo. In another life.
He tried to tell himself that he made the right choice. They needed the money for his mother’s medical bills. That it was the responsible thing to do. His mother had sacrificed so much to get him to where he needed to be and it was his turn to sacrifice for her. He had a good life now. He was one of the top competitors in professional wrestling. A household name. A success.
But was it the same?
“Hope your ass is decent.” Came the sound of Nate’s voice as the bedroom door opened pouring in light from the rest of the rental into the room. “Sadboi hour in full effect already?”
Nate did not wait for a reply coming into the room and sitting next to Pax on the bed, “Homie, we can watch it on the TV in the livingroom if you really want to. But ya ain’t staying in here alone to stew.”
Pax opened his mouth to protest, but Nate was already coming into the room. “Man, I dunno. I don’t want to bring the mood down.”
He was silent for a moment as he stared at his phone. “And not full effect. 97 Kilo freestyle doesn’t start until tomorrow. Look, it’s whatever. I’ll get over it. Just… ya know. What might have been.”
“Bro. I know you got big regrets. You coulda been there. That coulda been you. I get that. But you stuck by your family. You took care of your mom. It wasn’t because you couldn’t do it. You gave up a dream to see her through. And she was proud of ya. You one of the greats.” Nate hugged Pax with one arm around the shoulder. “I’m proud of ya. It don’t matter what anyone else says, you put your mom first. That’s fucking legit shit.”
A frown crossed Pax’s face for a moment as he leaned into Nate. “Ya, I know. I did the right thing. I did what I was supposed to do. I don’t even regret it.” He looked back down at his phone. “Well. I mean I guess maybe I do a little. But still…”
“Yeah. That’s human. But doesn’t mean ya get to sit in the dark and let the shit stew. Come watch with me and Jack. Or hell, we could watch something fuckin’ stupid. Like an anime that doesn’t have magical girls in it since the girls are gone. Fucking Demon slayer or somethin’.”
“I like stewing in the dark though.” Pax chewed his lip thoughtfully as he glanced down at his phone again. “But it might be better to watch with ya’ll. I dunno.” He sighed heavily. “Sure. OK. It’d be nice to watch something on the big TV that didn’t deal with the power of friendship for once.”
“Fucking right? And they trying to corrupt Jack with it now.” Nate stood up and offered his hand, “Thanks for bein’ reasonable or Jack and I were gonna carry you out.”
Pax snorted. “Bitch, as if you could.”
“JACK! Carry bitch is a go!” Nate called, Jack came into the room. The two grabbed Pax and lifted him up and carried him out as he laughed.
The vlog opens with Pax standing in a room in front of a picture window with a TDH t-shirt on
“Hey what up Neechies!”
The image zooms back, revealing Jack and Nate standing next to him as well.
“It’s ya bois!”
“What’s good IWF? You ready to see the fucking best match of the night? You ready to see TDH rock the fuck out of you? Are you ready to watch Pax display that athleticism that gets the girls weak in the knees? You ready for Jack to remind ya’ll why he’s one of the best up-and-comers? You ready for yours truly to flex on you motherfuckers?”
Jack laughs, “Really sell them the whole bag right up front? No warm-up? No foreplay?”
“Nah, we doing’ this right!”
Pax smirks. “We don’t gotta warm em up. Savage Kingdom did that for us didn’t they? They had our name all up in their mouth. They know who coming for them. Hell Jack they mad as hell at you for not letting them cheat. Acting like you robbed them cause they know if it’s in a stand up fight they can’t step to a single one of us.”
“Fuck em.” Jack shrugged, “If Madjinn couldn’t handle it legit he wasn’t gonna make it to Warren anyway. We all know his psycho on a leash would have been at the ringside anyway. If they are pressed about it then they can come have a go, right?”
“Hells yeah. We all know when people feeling’ threatened they come throw some hands. We all know that they likely gonna act up during our match against the guys we fightin’ this week.”
“Get you a real good look Madjinn and Widow. You goin see what a real group works like. Type that aint happy taking shortcuts to get a win. Get a real good look and see what the future holds for ya.”
“Really good look.” Nate grins.
“But we should talk about the boys we fighting this week.” Jack reminded them.
“For real. Don’t worry boys, we ain’t sleepin on you at all. Got mad respect for ya’ll. Well… I got respect for Billy and Phillip and serious concerns for Ducky. Let’s be real.” Pax winces slightly as he pushes his hair back from his face.
“Ducky…you good bro? Your poems are weird and worshiping a fucking weird guy aside… you got to be running low on Duck poems.” Jack shrugged, “Billie and Phillip are fucking legit! They work their asses off. They show up every week and they don’t really give up. Love that.”
“Billie and Philip. Nothing but love you yall. You do your shit. You’re good kids. Ducky?” Nate leaned into the camera, “And more specifically the spooky cryptid you work for? Fuck you. Fuck that whole bullshit.”
The lights in the room flicker for a moment.
“Anyways, Ducky, my guy. Do you need help? Blink twice if you need help. I get it you got brainwashed or something but they got like deprogram centers or some shit. Phillip, show show up to work ready to fucking go. You got your heart on your sleeve and you are giving it your all every time you step through those ropes. I can’t help but respect that. You keep getting right back up and going back for the love of the sport. Ya love to see that shit man. I admire the fuck outta you for that. And Billie? My man. You the son of one of the greats in this business and unlike some people I could name ya don’t make that your personality. You go out there and make your own name. You fight hard and you give it your all. I’m looking forward to squaring up in the ring with you.”
“Fuck yeah.” Jack smiles.
“Did anyone else notice the fucking lights-”
“Nate, if you focus on that you are gonna get all paranoid and shit.”
“Lot of people in this house. Just an outage man.”
“Sorry, right. This match is gonna be fucking hype as hell. We gonna come in and just blow people a fucking way. And why not? We’re fucking TDH and you boys-mostly- are legit fucking workhorses.”
“We gonna put on a clinic, boys. Show the world exactly why we the top team in this company. People been looking down on TDH for too long. Actin like we are just a stepping stone. Like we a joke. Time for us to show them just how wrong they are.”
“And we are going to.”
“Trust.”
