Inevitable
~Given the choice, Shea O’Hara much preferred Christmas to Halloween, but as that was still a couple months away, Vivienne Daniels had suggested trying to make Mai Everstone more comfortable in social situations by appealing to Mai’s favourite season. So here they were at Six Flags in Mexico, taking in the theme park’s atmospheric makeover for their ‘Festival Del Terror.’
Just as horror had been the bait for Mai Everstone, the DCeased comic book crossover had been the lure for Warren Kidd and little Damien Harper. They were all here at the scare maze together. Shea had hit upon the idea of killing two birds with one stone and filming an exclusive Vlog of the attraction for her website, an idea the theme park was all too happy to endorse as they got free celebrity promotion from a couple of former IWF World Champions in Warren and Shea. Mai happily worked behind the camera, filming, much more comfortable behind it than she ever was in front of one.
Warren wore a black ‘Daredevil: The Man Without Fear’ hoodie and denim jeans, for his personal amusement of antagonizing a horde of DC Zombies by representing the far superior Marvel brand. Shea wore an ‘AC/DC - Black In Black’ T-shirt under a black leather jacket, short black skirt, with a silver chain dangling over her right hip, and knee-high black leather boots.
Dean had dressed Damien in an appropriately themed blue Superman logo t-shirt and shorts, something Warren was happy to undermine by presenting him with a brand new voice controlled Iron Man Mark V helmet and set of light up repulsor gloves, throwing off Dean’s carefully coordinated look entirely. An excited Damien not only insisted on wearing Warren’s expensive gifts as soon as he was presented with them, but now refused to take them off for the rest of his day with Warren and Auntie Shea. As much of an obsession as Bluey still was to the precious five year old boy, since the divorce, superheroes had become even more important to Damien as they were the strongest link he and Warren still shared.
Damien was happily carried on Shea’s hip as they made their way through the scare maze, with Damien happily keeping the zombies away with periodic repulsor blasts, protecting both Shea and Warren from being attacked. Most of the heroic zombies were happy to play along, reacting to being blasted in the chest and falling back, even as Shea and Warren occasionally alerted him with squeals and jumps. In his new armour, Damien felt safe and invincible, just like Warren still was in his eyes.
“Want to say hi to Daddy?” Shea asked Damien. She smirked, knowingly at the camera. “I know he’ll be watching this later.”
Damien nodded. “Open Mask,” he said. The helmet reacted to his command and revealed Damien’s bright smile as he waved at Mai and the camera. “Hi Daddy!”
“Dean still a sub then?” Warren asked Shea.
“Always has been,” Shea replied. “Even renewed his sub when I switched domains and had the site rebuilt, just like you, Viv and Dawn did. Force of habit I guess. I didn’t think he’d still be interested, especially after he fell out with Rowan and no longer needed to keep tabs on me for her.”
“I know he’s always appreciated your music recommendations,” Warren said. “He insisted we send you a care package after your miscarriage. But with how he always freaked out about how close you and I were, I was sure he’d have no reason to keep his blog subscription to you. If it bothers you, I can ask him to cancel.”
“No need, haters never bother me,” Shea said. “It’s their own time they’re wasting if they go out of their way to still support my content. Besides we both know Dean’s probably not the only hate watcher I have. It’s just the price of putting myself out there on the internet, like. There will always be haters and it’s not like you can control who sees your stuff.”
“No, I suppose you can’t,” Warren conceded. “Still, you’re a much bigger person than I could ever be. I really admire that about you. I’ve tried to follow your example, but…”
“But you’re too much of a petty little bitch to let things go,” Shea chuckled. “I know, and yet I love you anyway. Bestie.”
“I love you too,” Warren smiled as their eyes met. “Bestie.”
“Warren?” Damien asked softly, interrupting their moment.
Warren blinked and refocused on Damien. “Yeah? What’s up, Damo.”
“Are you going to marry Auntie Shea now?”
“No, we’re just friends,” Shea said. “Besides, Warren is with Mimi now.”
“But Warren never tells Mimi he loves her,” Damien said. “He tells you all the time, like he used to tell Daddy. He even looks at you like he used to look at Daddy.”
“Okay,” Warren said, looking into the camera. “I think we need to cut this out, right, Mai?”
“Not on your life,” Mai chuckled. “It’s just getting good.”
“Shea, please tell Mai we need to cut. Mimi will kill me. She already freaks out about my friendship with Rosa.”
“Oh, does she?” Shea smirked. “Why? Tell her you love her too, do you?”
“No,” Warren protested, “Mimi just has a hard time accepting my female friends.”
“Like you had such a hard time accepting one of her male friends that you beat him up?”
“That was different,” Warren insisted. “The prick deserved it.”
“Relax,” Shea said softly. “If Mimi has a real problem with me, she’ll get her chance to throw down with me at Odyssey on Tuesday. Until then, she can just shut up and deal with the fact that we are besties and always will be. Just like Dean can too.”
“But Dean never has dealt with it.”
“You’re right, he hasn’t,” Shea said, “But that was before our match. All I had to do to open his eyes to the fact that I was never to blame for the breakdown of his marriage was prove that I could take everything he could possibly throw at me in between a set of ropes, and I did that.”
“You did,” Warren nodded. “And I’m damn proud of you for that. I just need you to understand that I couldn’t stand to see you bleed. Dean was about to go too far, I knew it, because I know him. I’ve seen the look in his eyes before, many times. I once thought my love would be enough to keep the darker parts of his heart and the frayed corners of his mind in check. But ultimately, I failed. That’s on me.” Warren hung his head in shame, berating himself for being such a failure.
“Hey, hey,” Shea said softly, lifting his head slowly until their eyes met once more. “You didn’t fail. You can’t save somebody who doesn’t want to be saved, and Dean has never wanted to be a better man like you do. Dean is happy being who he is, likely because it’s the only way he knows how to be. People like you and me though, we know better, so we strive to be better. Don’t we?”
Warren opened his mouth to respond but was interrupted by a blood-curdling squeal that drew everyone’s attention. Warren turned first, “Oh look, it’s your mates.” He chuckled as Mai swung the camera to catch a glimpse of Rini Ishikawa and Natasha Walker glaring back at them. Mai quickly swung back to Shea who smiled at the camera.
“Small world,” Shea said.
“Not going to go over there and start shit with them, are you?” Warren asked.
“No, why would I? I don’t have any real problems with Charlie’s loyal understudies. They’re misguided idiots sure, but mostly harmless. Kicking them would be the closest I come to kicking a puppy at work,” Shea winked at the camera, her exact turn of phrase was deliberate and measured. A message to the man she knew would be watching her like he had for years now. And now he knew that she watched him closely too, and was absolutely not intimidated by him. “Heck, the only real problem I have with Charlie is the idea that she’s so much better than me. A blatant falsehood magnified by her current position at the top of the card, but one that will be corrected in little over a month at Survival Of The Fittest.”
“God, I love your confidence,” Mai remarked, off camera. “It’s inspiring.”
Shea smiled, professional enough to not let Mai’s praise derail her train of thought as she continued to speak directly to the camera. “Until then, it is in my best interest to keep us both healthy, because the woman with no damn brakes should also have no damn excuses when all is said and done between us. So I’ll watch her back against Mimi and Candy this week, not because I want to, but because I have to. Not just for my sake, but for the greater good of all in the Imperial Wrestling Federation. You’re not the first sun I’ve ever eclipsed in my career, Charlie, and you won’t be the last. And now you know the date of our next cosmic event, it’s just a matter of time, because I am inevitable.”
“And I am Iron Man,” Damien said, flashing a cute smile at the camera.
Shea high-fives the little man for a job well done.
“That’s my boy,” Warren said, high-fiving Damien too.
On that adorable note, Shea’s latest vlog ended.~
