I’ve never been one to take shortcuts. In my eyes hard work pays off and gets you were to you to be. There are some who would say that being a “nice guy” hasn’t gotten me anywhere. It wasn’t supposed to. There are plenty of wrestlers who have more accomplishments, more name recognition. I know this. I also know that I’m not the best in the world, never have been, and probably never will be. What I do know is that you will be hard pressed to find someone with more heart. It’s a main reason I’ve been able to do the things I’ve done. So what if I’m never a legend. I just don’t want to have any regrets.
Do I like getting up early in the morning? Hell no. I’ve never been a morning person. It’s just one of the sacrifices I make every day to prepare myself. I make a living fighting, but one the greatest battles is the fight to not hit the snooze button. I don’t give in, I persevere, and I overcome. I’ve only been in the IWF a few short weeks, but I hope my work hasn’t gone unnoticed. Entertaining fans is all I’ve ever wanted to do. It’s what makes me happiest. I’ve evolved over the years but one thing has never changed. I need the fans. Without them I am nothing.
That’s why I am happy for the opportunity I’ve been given. I’m entered in the Roulette match at High Stakes. It’s the quickest way for me to ascend to the top of the IWF ladder. If people haven’t noticed me yet then winning this match will surely open their eyes. While it’s the quickest way to the top, it’s not the easiest. There are going to be twenty nine other men with only one thing on their mind, winning. When the prize is an Imperial title match what else would you expect?
March 16th, 2014 MORNING
Muru lies in bed looking at the alarm clock. It’s a couple of minutes before his room is going to be filled with the buzz that is his usually wake up call. He turns off the alarm and slowly exits the bed careful not to wake up the unknown woman beside him. Leaving the bedroom he heads to his kitchen for a small bite to eat. He doesn’t want to eat too much as it may be coming up soon. After he makes his way to the training area of the warehouse where he expects to find his cousin Ryan waiting for him. He isn’t. Finally about ten minutes later he sees his cousin enter.
Muru: You’re late…
Ryan Shane: Give me a break. This is the first time since we started this. I have to drive here. It’s not like I live here.
Muru: You could you know. There is plenty of room.
Ryan Shane: I have my own house.
Muru: It would make this training thing a lot easier.
Ryan Shane: This is a temporary arrangement to get you back on your feet. There is a lot at stake for you right now. The Roulette match isn’t going to be a joke.
Muru: I know that. I also know that you aren’t just doing this for me. I can see you want back in.
Ryan Shane: It doesn’t matter if I do or not. All that matters is you winning the Roulette match.
Muru: I would love to win the match. I’m not planning on it though.
Ryan Shane: That’s the problem isn’t it? You don’t think you can win.
Muru: I never said that.
Ryan Shane: You didn’t have to. If you don’t plan on winning then you never will.
Muru: I’m just being realistic.
Ryan Shane: You’re being a hypocrite. You talk about not giving up, but you already have. Are you just wasting my time?
Muru: No I want to win!
Ryan Shane: That isn’t good enough. You can’t lie to me. Tell me how you really feel!
Muru: I need to win! I need this! Are you happy now?
A smirk comes over the face of Shane.
Ryan Shane: Glad you can finally be honest with yourself.
Muru: Thanks again.
Ryan Shane: Don’t thank me yet. You’re not going to like what I have planned for today.
I’ve never faired to well in matches like this. A match like this favors men much bigger than I. It’s intimidating to me, and I’m afraid that all the good will I’ve put in can be undone with a bad showing. The luck of the draw has me coming in later in the match. That’s a positive. Hopefully I can come in fresh, with a head of steam and put myself in a position to win. It would be easier to make my way to the ring slowly, and then find a corner to hide in. That’s just not me. When I admitted earlier that I needed to win this match, it was the truth. I’m just not ready to go to any lengths to do so. If I’m going to win the Roulette match it’s going to be on my terms. I’m going to do it my way.
I know that when the experts look at the participants of this match I barely register a blip on the map when it comes to who will win. That’s fine. The one word that’s defined me most of my career is underdog. I never quite agreed with it. It’s not like I haven’t had success. I’ve proven that in the right situation I can take down even the biggest and strongest of opponents. I guess it’s just a stigma that’s going to stick with me forever. While I don’t agree with it, I don’t look at is as a negative. There are plenty of times when being a wrestler has been hard. I have walked away on more than one occasion. But what always helps me find my way back is the people who say I can’t do it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in the IWF to prove anything to them. I’m here to prove to myself that I’m as good as I ever was, and that I can be Imperial champ. Regardless of what happens at High Stakes I won’t give up.
