..::PROLOGUE::..
Some things never change.
Alexis Caffrey comes so close yet so far, Ana Valentine stands victorious, and Mercedes Vargas takes the fall.
Some things never change.
Ana needed that win more than I did, let's face it. She needs all the help she can get because she steps in the ring with someone I've already beaten, she steps in the ring with someone who is going to end her Diamonds Championship reign before it really got off the ground. She won her title the week I became Ruby Champion, but I promise you that I'll still be Ruby Champion Monday morning.
Seasons change, times change, weather change, but if you're expecting a title change this Sunday, well, you're about to be disappointed, because the one thing that won't change, the one thing that will remain constant is that I'm still the Imperial Wrestling Federation Ruby Champion. It didn't change this past Monday, it didn't change today, and it won't change Sunday at Night of the Immortals.
IWF, you want to put another wrench in the works? You want to put a rookie in front of me for my first title defense? Well, good luck with that. April Maddox doesn't even deserve to be breathing the same air, let alone stepping in the same ring with me, especially on pay-per-view. She's more deserving of having dark matches at best, which makes me kind of sad that Sunday Night House Show is no longer a staple of this company.
It took seven weeks β seven weeks! - for IWF to finally get their act together and give you this match, April, though you've been as silent as the grave. What exactly have you've been doing all this time except for that random tweet reminding us that you're still around? For the six weeks between the first match we had against one another and now? 11 shows have come and gone β six on Battleground, five on Sacrifice. What have you been doing? Exactly, nothing. Far as I'm concerned, I'd rather be wiping the smile off of the face of Alexis Caffrey, but you'll have to do for now.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and in my eyes this isn't a title match, this is an exhibition match. Because April, in less than twenty-four hours, you're not going to step into the ring with just anybody. You're not going to step into the ring with one of your wrestling school trainees, you're not going to step into the ring with someone who just graduated from wrestling school just yesterday, you're going to step into the ring with one of the best Diamonds on this roster or any other roster. You're standing across the ring and looking into the eyes of a proven veteran, someone who is more than capable of taking you to school and showing you what wrestling is all about.
But when I look into your eyes? I don't see a worthy challenger. No, I see someone who is desperate. Someone who is willing to do just about anything to claim something that will never be theirs. It's said that desperate people do desperate things, but desperation doesn't win championships, honey.
Even though you have the fans, the entire Diamonds lockerroom, and possibly the entire company behind you, the odds are more against than for you, April. But don't let that stop you, sweetheart, don't let that stop you. I want you to train, train to your little heart's content, because contrary to popular belief and the verbal diarrhea coming from every mealy mouth girl on the roster, I actually WANT to have a challenge Sunday. Ducking challengers is something that goes against everything I stand for. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. And right now, I'm the best, and until you beat me - and that won't happen, I guarantee you that much - you're nothing.
If anything, the pressure is on you, April. I lose this title, I can always get a re-match, but you got one shot at fame or failure, just one. Because if you screw up here, it's going to be awhile before you get another title opportunity. Practically anyone could have won that battle royal, and you know it. But luck isn't going to cut it Sunday. You got heart, but heart can only take you so far. You got a never-say-die attitude, but that means nothing when you're facing someone who lives that motto. A month ago when we had our first match, following the week you became number one contender, I said no matter what happens, don't hold back. I wanted you at your best. I wanted you to push yourself harder than you've ever pushed yourself before, but you failed that night, April. You disappointed a lot of people that night, not only me. You disappointed your fans, your family, IWF, but more importantly, you disappointed yourself.
That's why come Sunday when the final bell sounds, you'll be asking yourself the same question everyone else will β 'Was it really worth it?'
And even if you were to win, even if by some divine miracle you were able to beat me, anyone with a working brain cell might argue that you're only champion because of shock value alone. It's become a thing with the Ruby Championship, apparently. I know you've only been here for a few months, April, but let me give you a history lesson, okay? Six Diamonds have held this championship, but the only difference between me and the other five title holders? I don't plan on losing it anytime soon.
Do you know what you're getting yourself into Sunday heading into this title match against one of the best wrestlers not just in this company but in the entire world, April? I don't think you do. I don't think you understand the importance of this match. From the day the ink dried on that contract, sure, you've hit the ground running. Flashy moves here, an upset or two there, IWF brass absolutely smitten with you. It's just too bad all of that vanished just as quickly. They put you in a match against me just to see if you could keep up and, not surprisingly, you failed.
And now here we are seven weeks later. Here we are in one of the most important matches you'll have in this company, and it may be just as far as you'll ever go in this company. I really hope you going MIA was worth it, I hope you were able to make up for lost time, I hope you were able to put it to good use, April, because youβre going to need a miracle to even have a chance of taking my title from around my waist, sweetheart.
April showers bring May flowers. Yeah right.
I want you to bring that fire I know you're capable of bringing, just keep one thing in mind.
You could start a fire that you can't put out. You may have lit that first match, but you just as well can cause your world to come crumbling down on top of you in flames.

"Can't help looking after the dog tonight."
What? But you promised me over the phone!
Scene opens in Mercedes's apartment. Mercedes is doing a crossword puzzle as Jorge is getting ready to leave.
.::JORGE::..
Sorry, sis. Kinda got plans for the evening.
.::MERCEDES::..
I have a flight to catch in about an hour. Where are you going that's so important?
.::JORGE::..
The movies.
.::MERCEDES::..
Again? That's the third Sunday in a row. Can't you go another night?
.::JORGE::..
Sorry, but I've got to see this movie. It's supposed to be a good.
.::MERCEDES::..
That's what you said about the movie you saw last week.
Mercedes moves to the kitchen, rummaging through the cabinet.
.::MERCEDES::..
Where are the crackers? Don't tell me you ate them all! Again!
.::JORGE::..
Yes, I did. I couldn't help it. They're were so good.
.::MERCEDES::..
I thought you didn't like crackers?
.::JORGE::..
Well, I don't like graham crackers. But Wheat Thins are different. I love them to death.
.::MERCEDES::..
Huh, I didn't know that.
.::JORGE::..
Well, tell you what, Wheat Thins taste even better with a glass of cold milk, or beer, or apple juice.
Returning to the room, Mercedes leans against the door frame and has her arms crossed in front of her while shaking her head.
.::MERCEDES::..
This is why we can't have nice things, Jorge. And what about this movie anyway? I'm almost sure you said that about the last movie you saw?
.::JORGE::..
Eh, The Godmother was okay. Didn't really live up to the hype.
.::MERCEDES::..
Maybe it's because it was about, oh, I don't know, a godmother instead of a crime boss? Honestly, who writes this crap?
.::JORGE::..
I have no idea. The Hunt for Red September makes it all worth it.
.::MERCEDES::..
Don't you mean βThe Hunt for Red October.β
.::JORGE::..
No, I mean The Hunt for Red September. It's the prequel.
.::MERCEDES::..
Riiiight. What will they think up next?

..::EPILOGUE::..
And so it all comes down to this.
It doesn't get any bigger than this. Under the bright lights, on pay-per-view, first-ever title match, the entire world watching the twentysomething from Colchester, Vermont press her luck against the proven veteran that everyone and their dog loves to hate. Makes for a great storyline, doesn't it?
April, I worked my ass off in winning this title, and I'm not going to allow you or anyone else to take it away from me. I don't care that you share the opinion of everyone in this company, I don't care how confident you are, I'm that much more. I'm willing to do whatever I have to, whatever it takes, whatever is necessary within the rules to keep you down for three seconds, make you tap or knock you the hell out, because I'm too good of a wrestler to resort to underhanded tactics, not that I'll need it against the likes of you.
You're a girl in a women's game, April. You'll have to grow up pretty fast if you want make something of yourself in IWF.
Sometimes you're the student, sometimes you're the teacher, and sometimes you're the lesson.
Some things never change.
At Night of the Immortals, you're going to learn that lesson real fast come Sunday in Dallas, Texas. I'm not just the standard, but the exception to the rule. Because I hold the gold. Now you can learn that lesson the easy way, or I can teach to you the hard way. Either way, you'll reach your moment of clarity soon enough.
My name is Mercedes Vargas. I am the Imperial Wrestling Federation Ruby Champion today, tomorrow, and when you wake up on Monday morning.
Because history is written by the winners.
Of course, you, too, will have your place in history.
As a footnote, and as another name added to my checklist.
