It is a beautiful and bright day, the sun beams down upon the grass of the small park and a brilliant white and red check blanket lays sprawled across it. In the centre of the blankets sits a large wicker basket, dotted around it are treats and snacks... Cookies and potato chips and perfectly cut little sandwiches and glasses of sweet apple cider.
Sitting on one side of the basket is Sunshine Sparkles, she holds a small white Daisy in her fingers and is inspecting the petals one by one, a small smile on her face as the centre of the flower reflects a yellow hue about her face. Sat beside her is Kyle Mason, their close proximity something unseen before, as Sunny leans back towards him just a little.
In a rare moment of quiet contemplation, we catch Mason simply watching Sunny, his eyes on her smiling face take in every tiny feature and movement. He cannot help but smile as she enjoys something so simple and pure and beautiful...
“Just like you” he says aloud.
Sunny jumps slightly and looks at him in a confused way. He laughs, realizing he verbalised only half of his thoughts... She breaks out into a smile again as she turns more of her body to look at him. Her shoulder drops down, removing all barrier between them.
“I meant to say... You are as beautiful and pure as natures gifts...” the words sound strange coming from someone known for such violence.
But here, in the quiet of the rolling fields, just between the two of them, he can allow himself a drop of his guard.. He can savour these few moments of happiness with the sweetest and most honest person he has ever met.
Sunny seems to regard his comments for a moment, furrowing her brow as if to comprehend what he sees that she does not. She glances down at herself but remains wordless as she then looks back up to him.
It happens in an instant, a second, the very blink of an eye and you would miss her dip her head forward for her lips to find his. The kiss was like a butterfly, a singular beat of it’s wings, a nanosecond of touch and yet it spread a warmth through them both neither knew could exist.
“Sorry” Sunny mumbles her cheeks flashing a bright and violent shade of red.
Kyle shakes his head, biting down a smile, he hooks his thumb under Sunny’s chin and tilts her head back so he may regard her. His own cheeks appear a little pinker than usual and in the moment he hesitates.. Afraid to spook her and in that hesitation, gives her chance to speak again.
“That... Was my first kiss...” she whispers the words, as though they are filled with a shame beyond her understanding “And... it was worth the wait...”
She smiles and he grins, unable to hesitate longer, he kisses her in response, this kiss lingers a little longer but is still sweet, innocent... He makes no move to press further, simply kisses her, holding his lips to hers so that the warmth may fill them again.
“Wow...” she whispers softly...
“Hmmm?” he questions, eyes closed and lost in the moment.
She turns her face to whisper in his ear and the words turn the smile into a grin, as he wraps an arm around her, holding her there softly against him.
“They were right..” she whispers “Fireworks....”
