The sound of the fist crashing into Johansen's skull sounds like a crack of lightning.
The old man crumbles to the ground with a whimper. His hands bound behind his back so he can't use them to break his fall. Thom tries to rush to his aid but of course he is also tied up as are the rest of the inhabitants of this, up till now, Utopia. They were all grouped together, tied up and on there knees. Seven of the men dressed in suits walk the perimeter of the captives waiting for the order. Thom looked at his friends and loved ones and he saw the horrible truth. They had become lambs to slaughter.
“Oh come on.....”
The apparent “leader” of these men stood before Johansen as he struggled to get up from the ground. He smiles a sick kind of smile. One that might suggest this guy enjoys taking advantage of this feeble old man.
“...you were so talkative earlier old man. What's a matter?”
He kicks the old man in the ribs and all the air shoots out of his lungs.
“Run out of things to say?”
The man hovers over Johansen and Thom couldnt take it any longer.
“Leave him alone.”
Thom says from his view point. The man in charge looks over and see's Thom's glare and perceives it for exactly what it was. A challenge.
“Or what?”
The man says as he slowly walks over toward Thom. That twisted grin returns as he etches closer.
“Your going to glare at me from a far some more? HA! You people are lucky I haven't had you killed yet.”
“You haven't killed us because you know you can't. You guys are cops.”
The man steps back and glances at the other men patrolling the perimeter.
“I'm right aren't I.”
The mans silence explains it all to Thom who smiles.
“You want more information about Cliff Clinton? I can give it to you....but first you have to untie my people and guarantee us our safety.”
The man thinks about it for a few moments, he was reluctant but it seemed like Thom knew all his secrets.
“Your men already searched the area. You know he isn't here. I can tell you where he is. But when I do you have to go to that place and leave immediately.”
The man smiled that sick twisted smile once more. He lowered his head and bowed to Thom.
“Well it seems this bound man has gotten me into a bind myself.”
He chuckles lightly at his own pun. He walks behind Thom and begins untying him. Some of the other suited men begin untying some of the women.
“I suppose you have a deal. So tell me what you know.”
“The truth is...”
Thom said as he cleared his throat to make room for the lies.
“...Cliff is long gone. He is a piece of garbage. He took money from me....my wallet. And he left.”
Of course that isn't true. Cliff was given that money and was possibly on his way back right now. The man in charge was visibly disappointed. His brows furrowed and shook his head. But that's when he heard it. When he did the man in charge's eyes lit up....if he had dog ears, they would be perked up....if he were a shark it would be as if he smelled blood.
Cough.
The faintest, tiniest cough imaginable....but it was just audible enough to be heard in that moment.
“Find it.”
His men search through the tied people, knocking them over like sacks of potatoes until they found the sick little girl. The grip her up by the arm.
“Mommy?”
She says with sore weak throat. The mother tries to snatch her child back but one of the men in a suit just back hand her and she falls back.
“Nooo!”
Thom yelled and tried to run after the small four year old girl but he was stopped by one of the men.
“ho ho jack pot!”
The man in charge says as he towers over the fearful crying sick little girl.
“Here I thought I had to lie my way through a deal with you people. When instead I find this. Now all the chips are on my side of the board.”
Thom shakes his head.
“You can't do anything your a cop remember?”
The man nods his head.
“I lied about that.”
He snaps his fingers and one of the men under his command drag a tied up person behind a building and then you hear a gun shot.
“Theatrics.”
The man in charge laughs.
“I was hoping you wouldn't believe me. Because now I get to prove it to you by breaking this little girls arm.”
The man twists the girls arm and pulls it back behind her one hand clutching the wrist and pulling and the other hand pushing forward on the elbow. He wasn't putting enough pressure to break it yet, but it was hurting the little girl a lot.
“I told you everything already!”
“You were lying. Tell me the truth or the arm gets broken!”
For every second Thom doesn't speak, the man increases the pressure on the arm. Thom brakes before the arm does.
“Ok! He is coming back here soon! He went to go get medicine for that little girl there. We sent him off a little bit before you guys came in. If you wait....he should be coming back here! That's everything! Absolutely everything I promise! Now just let the girl go.”
Thom yells as he drops to his knees and tears stream down his eyes, his emotions getting the best of him.
“There it is. That's the truth. So your saying if we wait then Cliff Clinton will just come waltzing through the door? Well that's great news. But who knows how long that could take? Sooooo.......
He quickly snaps the arm and Thom instantly goes nuts and flies after the man in charge and you hear all hell breaking lose as the scene quickly fades.
“Rome, Italy.”
Cliff says as he stares into the lens of the IWF issued handi-cam. He stood outside in another back alley.
“It's the home to a lot of things in my life.”
He smiles as he stares at the setting sun. The beautiful Italian landscapes makes it look extremely breath taking.
“The first time I ever won a world title was here in Rome. It was also home to my first cage match. And the first time my name completely sold out a building. It was also the place where I got married to my amazing wife. It's where we had our honeymoon, and I dare say it's where my first daughter was conceived.”
Cliff smiles and pats his chest where his heart would be.
“Whether any of that stuff actually happened or not is debatable I suppose but they hold a special place in my heart right here. You may present to me all these undeniable cold hard facts that none of these events never happened and I may believe you from time to time. But nobody could ever take from me the feeling that I get when I think about it. Raising the title above my head, or dancing with my wife on the beach. They will forever be real in my heart.
And thats why Judas....I must respectfully decline your invitation to join your club. Even though I really want to blindly follow some thing you dug up out of the ground randomly like some freaky deaky extreme book of mormon.....it really sounds like fun.....but you see I'm happy out here on my own.
“Well I mean I'm not really.....its the worst being ostracized by your own people and forced to live well below your means. In fact most of the time im miserable. And even though your invite to be part of a family...part of a community....was periodically something I was really considering, showing up here to Rome for this pay per view really helped me reach my conclusion.
“I already know what family is like.”
“I had a family. And they loved me like no other could. Not you Judas, not your God. Nobody could ever take the place of them.”
“Whenever I'm feeling down or lonely I just think back to them Judas. I think back to how they make me feel on the inside and I know that I'm not truly alone. See you and your God think they have people figured out. You think you can just look at a person and know what they want. You see me, a man who is forced to live on his own and fend for himself and you immediately think that I'm desperate to live in some kind of community. That I'm desperate to be just like everyone else.”
Cliff shakes his head.
“Your god couldnt be more wrong Judas. See I would hate myself if I allowed myself to become them. To become a part of there society again would be to agree with all the things they've done to me. At least out here....I have that freedom. I have the ability to decide where I want to go, what I want to do....what I want to think.
Your God can't provide me with that Judas.
Gods can never give a man free will.
Gods are designed to stop free will.
So forgive me Judas but I wont be drinking the kool-aid this Sunday at Lineage.
But I'll tell you what will happen. We are going to make up for that false start last week on Sacrifice. This Sunday at Lineage your going to come to that pay per view and your going to do everything your God has told you to do. You'll fight me and take all the punishment that I can muster and you'll enjoy it immensely. After a while of struggling I'm going to drop you on your head with a Cliff Hanger and I'm going to leave you and your God in the dust where it belongs.
Basically what I''m trying to say Judas.....
...is your god can shove it up his ass!”
Cliff opened the door to the Utopia as fast as he could. There was no time to waist. He ran into the old abandoned subway station with the bottle of cold medicine in his hands.
“I got the medicine! I got the....”
Thats when he notices something peculiar. Nobody was there.
“HELLO?”
He looked around the place, the eerie silence was starting to freak him out. Suddenly he spies in the middle of the station was a pole with a note on it. He slowly walks up to the note and see's that the note is addressed to him. He pulls it off the tape and reads it out loud.
“Dear Cliff, I hope this reaches you in time. I hope this letter is not too late. Please read every word carefully as to not miss anything.”
As Cliff reads the letter you can see the man in charge behind Cliff slowly sneaking up on him.
“It is very important that you read this letter carefully. While you were gone there were some people who showed up.”
The man in charge sneaks up closer, slowly raising a bat over his head.
“They came and they wrote this letter. Around now is a good time to tell you that this letter is meant to distract you....everyone is dead....and your next-”
CRACK!
Cliff goes down like a bag of bricks and the man in charge smiles that evil grin.
“Love me.”
He laughs and tosses the bat to the side.
“Tie him up and load him into the van. We need him back alive!”
Fade.
